Fahed stood up. "What about the south?"
"Still fighting. The 2nd Brigade is stuck in Hana Street. The Israelis blew up a building, blocking the road. The engineers are clearing it, and it will take at least two hours."
Fahed glanced at his watch.
Two hours. Two hours was enough time for the Israelis to bring reinforcements from Haifa, enough time for American aircraft carriers to launch planes, enough—he didn't dare to think further.
"Tell the 2nd Brigade not to take the main road. Go through the alleys, on foot. Tanks can't go through, but people can. If people get through, they can fight."
The adjutant turned and ran off.
Fahed walked to the window and looked at the building across the street. The woman was still holding her child, still crouching in the corner, still trembling. He raised his gun, aiming at the window.
He didn't shoot.
He lowered his gun and turned to go downstairs.
