Madelyn hesitated at the threshold as Mr Brand and the kingsman, who had met them at the carriage, stood waiting. At the doormen's command, the doors swung open to a chamber, fine and regal: the royal dining room. Quickly, she fell into step again when the men resumed their walk.
"His Royal Highness, Prince Brand, and his guest!" the kingsman announced as soon as they entered, his voice carrying through the room to the king and the queen, who were already seated.
Against her hopes, Madelyn found herself unable to summon any comforting emotions. Instead of it being bright and reassuring, her smile was far too firm and very grim. She was very nervous and could do nothing to hide it.
His guest? She was more than his guest now. He had made her his affiancéd? How had they come to this? Months ago, they were unknown to each other. Days ago, she had wanted to stay from him. Hours ago, she had waited to leave.
