Chapter 36 - Relic and A Dragon Gift

We arrived at Arthur's residence, a modest yet sturdy house nestled at the edge of the village. Arthur ushered me inside, and we settled into his study. The room was dimly lit by flickering candles, casting dancing shadows on the walls. Arthur's face was taut with seriousness as he began speaking.

"There's something I need you to do for me," Arthur said abruptly, cutting straight to the point. "It's of utmost importance."

I raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "What is it?"

Arthur leaned forward, his expression intense. "There's an artifact, one I created long ago with the help of Merlin. It's crucial that it is recovered."

I studied him closely. "What kind of artifact are we talking about?"

Arthur's eyes flickered with a mixture of nostalgia and gravity. "It's an ancient crystal orb, imbued with powerful enchantments. The orb is known to contain a significant amount of magical energy, which can be harnessed for various purposes. I entrusted it to a secure location near Hogwarts for safekeeping."

My interest sharpened. "And where exactly did you hide it?"

Arthur's gaze grew more somber. "It's concealed within an ancient vault hidden in the Forbidden Forest, just outside the grounds of Hogwarts. The vault is protected by powerful wards and spells. You'll need to solve a series of test to access it."

I nodded, absorbing the information. "What are the specifics of these wards and riddles?"

Arthur's expression grew thoughtful. "The wards are designed to repel unauthorized intruders, and the test are crafted to test one's knowledge of ancient magic and deemed that they are worthy. The details of these protections are complex, but I have faith in your abilities to navigate them."

I took a deep breath, considering the challenge ahead. "And what about Merlin? If you're still around, he must be too."

Arthur's expression darkened slightly, and he avoided my gaze. "Merlin... is a matter best left undisturbed. His whereabouts are not something I can divulge."

I pressed further, unable to ignore the curiosity gnawing at me. "But surely you must know where he is. You two were allies."

Arthur's face remained inscrutable. "It's not relevant right now. What matters is the artifact. Focus on that."

Realizing I wouldn't get any more from him, I decided to let it go. "Alright. I'll find the artifact. But what's the deal with Merlin?"

Arthur gave me a brief, clipped response. "Some things are best left in the past."

Not wanting to push further and risk straining our already tenuous conversation, I changed the topic. "Is there anything else you need me to know before I head to Hogwarts?"

Arthur's face softened slightly. "Actually, there is. Have you considered getting a companion for your time at Hogwarts? A pet, perhaps?"

I shook my head. "I didn't think I'd need one. I can manage on my own."

Arthur's eyes twinkled with amusement. "You might find it more beneficial than you expect. But it's up to you."

With that, Arthur stood and guided me out of the house. We walked toward an open space at the back of the village—a wide, grassy plain that stretched out beneath the starlit sky. The cool breeze rustled through the grass, and the air seemed to hum with an underlying energy.

Arthur led me to the center of the plain and then, with a commanding tone, called out, "Here, old friend!"

I watched in awe as a massive shape materialized in the distance. The ground trembled slightly as an ancient and imposing dragon emerged from the shadows. Its scales shimmered like molten gold under the moonlight, and its eyes glowed with a fierce, intelligent light.

The dragon's presence was overwhelming, and I could feel the raw power emanating from it. It approached us with a regal gait, its wings folded neatly against its sides.

Arthur turned to me with a grin. "This is Draconis, a dragon of great pride and power. Dragons are known for their resistance to accepting masters, but being a descendant of the Pendragon family, you have a special bond with them."

I was stunned. The dragon's gaze fixed on me, and to my surprise, it moved closer, its massive head lowering as if in recognition. I cautiously extended a hand, and the dragon allowed me to touch its scales. The contact was electrifying, a surge of warmth and strength flowing through me.

Arthur chuckled softly. "It seems Draconis acknowledges you. Not many can say they've earned a dragon's respect so quickly."

The dragon then did something unexpected. It lowered its head and nudged me gently with its snout, almost as if urging me to come closer. I hesitated but then took a step forward. Draconis seemed to accept my presence, settling down beside me with a contented rumble.

After a few moments, the dragon produced an object from its claws. It was an egg, wrapped in a delicate, glowing aura. Arthur's eyes twinkled with something akin to mischief.

"It appears that Draconis wants you to take care of its child," Arthur said. "The dragon is asking for your protection for this egg."

I took the egg carefully, feeling its warmth against my hands. The dragon's gaze was steady, filled with a silent plea for me to safeguard its offspring. It was a weighty responsibility, but one I felt honored to accept.

"I will," I said, my voice firm. "I'll take good care of it."

Arthur nodded approvingly. "Good. It will be a companion you can rely on, and its presence might prove valuable in the future."

As I cradled the egg, I couldn't help but marvel at the turn of events. A dragon, a powerful relic, and the looming adventure at Hogwarts all seemed to converge into a single, thrilling journey.

As I left the plain, the cool night air seemed to hum with possibility. The dragon's gift was a symbol of the trials and triumphs to come. I knew the path would be fraught with danger, but with newfound allies and a growing sense of destiny, I was ready to face whatever lay ahead.

[System Alert: New objective: Safeguard the dragon's egg and retrieve the artifact hidden in the Forbidden Forest near Hogwarts.]

"Time to see what the future holds," I murmured to myself, steeling my resolve for the challenges that awaited me.
