Chapter 125: Shadows and Whispers
The mourning in King's Landing had not ended, but its tone had begun to shift.
Black banners still hung from every tower and gate, and the bells continued their slow, solemn tolling. Yet beneath the surface of grief, something sharper stirred. Uncertainty. Whispers. The subtle sharpening of knives in the dark. Jon Arryn's death had removed the one man who had kept the realm's fragile balance intact. Now the court held its breath, waiting to see who would fill the void.
Petyr Baelish stood beside an open window in his modest but luxurious chambers, a cup of Arbor red in his hand. Below, the city moved through its mourning like a wounded animal. Merchants spoke in hushed voices. Gold Cloaks patrolled with black ribbons on their arms. Even the whores on the Street of Silk seemed subdued.
He was not smiling. Not yet.
Petyr took a slow sip, savoring the wine's sweetness. Everything had gone exactly according to plan. Lysa had played her part with the perfect mix of hysteria and conviction. The poison had been swift and untraceable. No suspicion pointed toward him. To the realm, Jon Arryn had simply been an old man whose body finally gave out.
"One stone," he whispered to the night wind. "One carefully placed push."
A faint, satisfied smile finally touched his lips.
Robert would need a new Hand. The king was predictable in his grief — he would reach for the one man he still trusted completely. Eddard Stark. The honorable wolf of Winterfell. Petyr's mind was already spinning ahead, calculating how best to use Ned's arrival. The North was far away, but its lord was honorable to a fault. Easy to manipulate. Easier to undermine.
And Lysa… she would be returning to the Eyrie soon. The letter she would send would be exactly what was needed — full of fear and accusations that would further isolate the Starks once they arrived.
Petyr finished his wine and set the cup down gently.
The game had truly begun.
In her chambers high in the Red Keep, Lysa Arryn clutched her son Robin tightly to her chest.
The boy slept fitfully, exhausted by the turmoil of the past days. Lysa rocked him gently, tears streaming down her face as she whispered the same words over and over.
"I did it for you… I did it for us… He would have taken you away from me… I couldn't let him…"
She believed every word with desperate conviction. Jon Arryn had grown too suspicious. He had asked too many questions about her son. About Robert's children. About the future of the realm. Littlefinger had promised her safety. He had promised her love. He had promised that Robin would be protected.
Now the old man was gone.
Servants moved quietly around the chamber, packing trunks and preparing for departure. Lysa had given strict orders — they would leave before dawn under the pretense of returning home to the Eyrie to mourn in private. No grand procession. No fanfare. Just a quiet exit before the capital could ask uncomfortable questions.
She kissed Robin's forehead, her hands trembling.
"Soon," she whispered. "Soon we'll be safe."
Deep within a hidden chamber filled with scrolls, caged birds, and the soft rustle of little wings, Varys read the latest reports by candlelight.
Jon Arryn's death.
Sudden departure of Lady Lysa Arryn and her son.
Fresh whispers from White Harbor about the impossible kingdom beyond the Wall.
He organized every parchment with meticulous care, his soft hands moving with practiced precision. Then he paused, staring at the name on one scroll.
Jon Arryn was gone.
The one man who had held Robert's fractious court together through sheer will, honor, and quiet authority. The realm had lost its anchor.
Varys leaned back, folding his hands beneath his chin. His mind worked rapidly, connecting threads. Lysa's sudden departure was too convenient. Too perfectly timed. Petyr Baelish had been unusually quiet during the Small Council meeting. The Spider's instincts whispered caution.
He resolved quietly to watch Littlefinger more closely than ever.
The game of thrones had claimed another piece. Varys wondered who would benefit most from the Hand's death — and what new chaos would bloom in the vacuum left behind.
At the docks of Blackwater Bay, Stannis Baratheon stood aboard his ship, Fury, watching the lights of King's Landing flicker in the distance.
He had not attended the Small Council. He had not offered condolences. Jon Arryn's investigations into the royal children had been cut short by death, but Stannis's suspicions had only deepened. The boy Joffrey's temper, the strange inconsistencies in the royal lineage, the way Cersei watched everyone with cold calculation — it all pointed toward something rotten at the heart of the throne.
Stannis could not remain in King's Landing any longer. The air here choked him. He would sail for Dragonstone and continue Jon Arryn's work in secret. The truth had to be uncovered, no matter the cost.
He gave the order quietly. The ship slipped away into the night, carrying the grim Lord of Dragonstone toward his isolated seat of power.
As the night deepened, ravens left King's Landing in every direction.
To Winterfell.
To the Eyrie.
To Casterly Rock.
To Highgarden.
To Sunspear and Riverrun and Pyke.
Great houses across Westeros received the news: the Hand of the King was dead.
Grief was ending.
Ambition was beginning.
