Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 : Second life

Lucien, a young man of 25, lived an existence so ordinary it almost seemed cursed. In modern society, he was just another face in the crowd, working as a computer developer. Each day bled into the next, an endless litany of code and screens dedicated to mobile applications that brought him no joy. His social life was a shadow of what it could have been, limited to a handful of friends and family visits that felt more like obligations than pleasures. Yet, in his mundane existence, Lucien found a semblance of peace. He cherished the predictability of his routine and the small comforts his hobbies provided.

Lucien's true passion lay in the distant echoes of ancient history, particularly the grandeur and brutality of ancient Rome. His tiny apartment was a shrine to the past, filled with replicas of Roman artifacts and tomes detailing the lives of emperors, the bloodshed of wars, and the whispering corridors of political intrigue. He devoured these stories, allowing them to transport him to a world far removed from his own.

That Friday, after a grueling day at work, Lucien couldn't wait to lose himself in the pages of a new book he'd just acquired, "The Secrets of Ancient Rome." As he bid his colleagues goodbye, he slipped on his headphones and listened to a radio broadcast about the latest archaeological findings in Pompeii. The familiar bus ride home felt like the final hurdle before he could retreat into his beloved antiquity.

Upon arriving home, Lucien prepared a quick dinner and settled onto his sofa. Hours flew by as he read about epic battles and cunning political maneuvers, his mind swimming in a sea of togas and temples. When he finally closed the book, a sigh of contentment escaped his lips. His thoughts still lingered in ancient Rome as he drifted off to sleep.

The next morning, Lucien rose early, a list of errands awaiting him. He moved through the motions of his day, his mind wandering back to Roman intrigues as he walked down the sidewalk. His reverie was shattered by the sudden screech of tires. He turned just in time to see a truck barreling towards him, but not in time to react.

The impact was devastating. Pain exploded through his body as he was thrown to the ground. His breath came in ragged gasps, and an oppressive darkness closed in around him. In his final moments, his thoughts turned to his loved ones and the ancient Rome he adored. A faint smile touched his lips as he succumbed to the darkness, life slipping away in the aftermath of a tragic accident.

But the darkness did not last. Slowly, warmth and light began to seep into his awareness. The pain was different now, a dull ache that felt almost distant. Lucien opened his eyes, blinking against the brightness. The first thing he noticed was the smell—a pungent mix of earth, sweat, and blood. He tried to move, but his body felt foreign and unresponsive. Panic set in as he realized he was lying on a dirt floor, surrounded by people in crude tunics.

"Where am I?" he croaked, his voice barely more than a whisper.

A woman leaned over him, her face lined with fatigue and concern. She spoke in a language he didn't initially understand, but its cadence was hauntingly familiar. As the words coalesced into meaning, he realized she was speaking Latin, a language he had studied but never expected to hear spoken so naturally.

"You are alive! Glory to the gods!" she exclaimed.

Lucien mind reeled. He struggled to speak, but the words wouldn't come. His senses were overwhelmed by the alien environment, the faces, the sounds, the smells. A sharp pain lanced through his skull, and his vision blurred. Images that were not his own flooded his mind—memories of running through fields, learning to ride a horse, playing with a young boy in a sun-drenched courtyard. These memories belonged to Lucien, the young man whose body he now inhabited.

The pain subsided slowly, leaving Lucien with a jumbled mess of his own memories intertwined with those of Lucius. As he took deep breaths, he began to acclimate to this new reality, the two consciousnesses merging into a single, uneasy identity. He opened his eyes, ready to confront the strange new world he found himself in.

The woman frowned "Are you okay you sweat a lot ?"

Lucien tried to speak, but words failed him. "I… am fine."

"Lucien you fainted yesterday after practicing your sword. Rest, I'll take care of you" she said softly, taking his hand.

Lucien was stunned. He repeated the name in his head, realizing that he had the same first name as in his previous life. "Lucien," he whispered. "It's amazing…same name."

The woman looked at him curiously. "What's amazing, Lucien?"

"Nothing...nothing at all," he replied quickly, not knowing how to explain his astonishment. "Thank you for helping me."

She smiled kindly at him. "Rest now. You're safe here."

Lucien closed his eyes, letting fatigue and pain overcome him. Little by little, he felt a strange sensation of warmth and security. "Thank you," he whispered before slipping back into unconsciousness.

The first days were a trial by fire. Lucien had to learn to command his new body and navigate a life vastly different from his own. Every task was a struggle, every interaction a test. Yet, his passion for Roman history proved invaluable. His knowledge of customs, traditions, and the political landscape provided him with a unique edge.

He grew close to his new family, especially his mother, Claudia, a kind but firm woman, and his younger brother, Marcus, a curious and mischievous child. His father, Gaius, was a stern but fair man, respected in their community for his wisdom and integrity as a soldier of Rome.

He also had an 8 year old younger brother named Marcus.

Lucien realized he had been given a rare chance—to live the history he had only ever read about. With his modern knowledge, he could influence the lives of those around him, perhaps even alter the course of history. But he had to tread carefully. Ancient Rome was a treacherous place, rife with dangers and deceptions.

One evening, under a canopy of stars, Lucien pondered his fate. Nostalgia for his past life mingled with a burgeoning sense of belonging in this new era. He turned to his brother, who lay beside him, gazing up at the heavens.

"Marcus, do you think the gods have a plan for us?" he asked quietly.

Marcus looked at him, surprise flickering in his eyes. "Of course, brother. The gods have plans for everyone. It's just not always clear what they are."

Lucien smiled and placed a reassuring hand on his brother's shoulder. "Then let's make our story one for the ages."

And so began the tale of Lucien Elevatus, a man from modernity reborn in ancient Rome, ready to face the perils and possibilities of this extraordinary time with a resolve to shape his destiny and conquer the ancient world.
