The next day was Jason's race.
Early in the morning, he was in the kitchen, pacing back and forth, muttering to himself. He had been up since dawn, praying to every god he had ever heard of. He wanted to win. He had a reputation to uphold. And he wanted to impress Winter. He had been thinking about her since the night before. He wanted to show her what he could do.
He walked to Mira's room to check on her, his heart pounding with nervous energy.
"Hello, Mira," he said, poking his head through the door. "How are you feeling?"
Bella was sitting beside Mira's bed, her eyes soft and tired. She looked up at Jason with a smile.
Mira was awake, her eyes open but heavy. She looked at the unknown man who had just walked in, her brow furrowing slightly. She did not remember meeting him before.
Jason walked into the room and pulled up a chair beside the bed. He sat down, his hands on his knees, his smile wide and bright.
