The next morning, before his father Xu Qinghe left for work, Xu Nian'an hurried home to talk about the apprenticeship.
"This is a great thing!" Xu Qinghe looked proud—his own son was going to be a doctor one day.
"Then let's bring the apprenticeship gift today."
Xu Qinghe couldn't wait. His son was doing well; now that he had a master, and if he got into medical school, he'd become a proper doctor. Doctors save lives—and they make money, too.
"Dad, don't rush. I still have class today. I'm thinking of going this Sunday, since I'll be free then." Xu Nian'an explained, and then said to Ji Ying, "Mom, I spoke with Grandpa Du—that is, Master—yesterday. I'll formally go to apprentice on Sunday."
