Genshin Impact: I'm The Envoy of Snezhnaya
Chapter 329: Solving the Problem at Its Root
"This is merely a suggestion of mine, Acting Grand Master. I believe you, more than anyone else, are well aware of whether the Fatui have the capability to resolve this issue."
In the entirety of Mondstadt City, the only person who still addressed Jean as Acting Grand Master was the Fatui counselor standing before her—Anastasia.
To the citizens of Mondstadt, the roar of a mysterious dragon was nothing short of a disaster.
But in Anastasia's eyes, it was an opportunity for the Fatui to rise once more.
That was why, after Jean finished handling all related affairs, Anastasia immediately came to see her, hoping to secure the right to deal with the dragon.
"I naturally trust your organization's capabilities," Jean replied calmly, "but regarding that dragon's roar and the accompanying storm… we still need to conduct further investigations. Before we can confirm that its target is Mondstadt, I believe it would be best not to provoke it."
Jean understood the stakes perfectly well, which was why she rejected the proposal outright.
"Acting Grand Master, you should think this through carefully. Just a single gust of wind and one roar have already thrown all of Mondstadt into panic. If it truly attacks and only then you seek our help, it may already be too late."
Anastasia wasn't exaggerating.
Jean knew full well what such consequences would entail.
But handing over authority to deal with the dragon to the Fatui would mean giving them a legitimate reason to deploy their forces.
Compared to the dragon, the trouble the Fatui could bring was no smaller.
"If the dragon's target is not Mondstadt, then wouldn't your actions risk provoking it? If it were to vent its anger upon Mondstadt City, who would be responsible for the losses then? The Fatui?"
Jean pressed both hands against the table, and the presence around her slowly intensified along with her words.
The fact that the knights had long since stopped emphasizing the word acting and simply called her Grand Master meant that Jean was no longer the same as she once was.
"Hehehe~ that wouldn't be impossible. But are you certain you want to ask the Fatui for compensation?"
As someone entrusted with handling an entire nation's diplomatic affairs, Anastasia was no pushover either.
However, from today's exchange, she could tell that this Acting Grand Master had no intention of compromising.
"Let us conclude today's discussion here. I hope that when the dragon does arrive, Acting Grand Master, you will show even sharper resolve than you have today."
Putting on her mask, Anastasia gave an elegant bow and left the Knights of Favonius headquarters.
She left Jean alone, seated at her desk, quietly letting out a sigh.
With the combined efforts of the Knights, the unrest in Mondstadt City had already been brought under control.
Even Klee had been far more well-behaved than usual, refraining from causing trouble.
Now all that remained was to wait for Diluc to return with information related to the dragon.
After all, the greatest threat facing Mondstadt at present was that mysterious dragon.
Knock, knock…
The sound of something tapping against the window made Jean instinctively lift her head.
What she saw was a fiery-red cat squatting outside her office window, trying to pry it open.
"A cat from The Cat's Tail?"
Jean walked over and, seeing the little cat meowing at her from outside, reached out and opened the window.
Mondstadt had many cats, most of which gathered around The Cat's Tail.
Jean occasionally visited the place herself, but she had never seen a cat with such entirely crimson fur.
"Meow!"
After entering the room, Diluc squatted on the floor, clearly trying to say something to Jean. Unfortunately, in his feline form, all he could manage were a series of meows.
In his anxiety, he thought of writing to communicate.
With a leap, he jumped onto the desk. After glancing around, he hopped over to the inkwell, knocked it over, and dipped his paw into the ink a few times.
But before he could attempt to write anything, Jean had already wrapped her arms around him from behind and lifted him into her embrace.
"Little one, there are important documents on the desk. You mustn't play around with them."
As she spoke, Jean picked up a clean sheet of paper from the side and began wiping the ink stains off Diluc's paws.
Diluc wanted to struggle, but feeling the twin peak of softness behind him, he didn't dare move recklessly.
All he could do was helplessly let out a series of meows.
Don't be fooled by how serious Jean appeared in front of others, privately, she wasn't much different from an ordinary young woman.
For example, late at night in her office, she would secretly flip through romance novels like Vera's Melancholy.
Recently, there had been far too many matters troubling Mondstadt, and her stress was higher than usual. Petting a cat had become a rather effective way for her to relax.
That was one of the reasons she had let the cat in.
But that made things miserable for the cat being petted. He didn't dare move around, couldn't speak human language, and could only let out one meow after another.
That commotion also caught the attention of someone who had just returned to the Knights of Favonius headquarters.
"Grand Master, are you keeping a cat?"
Kaeya pushed the door open, documents in hand.
However, when he saw the cat cradled in Jean's arms, his expression gradually became… subtle.
Unlike Jean, Kaeya had once cooperated with Bai Luo in pursuing the "Darknight Hero," and had personally witnessed Bai Luo turning Diluc into a fiery-red cat.
The one in front of him now, could it be…?
"It's probably a cat from The Cat's Tail. It came in and knocked over the ink on my desk," Jean said calmly, still holding the cat. "You came at just the right time, help me wipe down the desk, will you?"
Jean didn't feel embarrassed at all and gestured for Kaeya to clean up the ink-splattered desk while she continued holding Diluc.
Being caught reading romance novels would have been embarrassing.
But petting a cat? That was perfectly normal, wasn't it?
She had even kept a turtle when she was younger.
"I'll put these documents on the bookshelf first, then."
After placing the documents onto the shelf, Kaeya began cleaning up the desk where Diluc had spilled the ink.
As he worked, though, he couldn't help sneaking glances at the red cat in Jean's arms.
That look in its eyes… yeah, no doubt about it. That was definitely Diluc.
If that was the case, then he must have run into the Ausbilder.
After all, in all of Mondstadt, aside from Lisa, the only one with potions that could turn people into animals was the Ausbilder.
Watching Diluc glare at him with unmistakable killing intent, Kaeya slowly began to form some rather crooked ideas.
"Grand Master Jean, you've never raised a cat before, have you?" He asked casually while wiping down the desk.
"Mm. I thought about it when I was young, but I never really had the time."
The Gunnhildr clan was an ancient family of knights. And with an old bloodline came heavy responsibilities. From a young age, Jean had been trained by her mother as the successor to knightly ideals.
While other children played and ran about, she studied etiquette, history, poetry, swordsmanship, and countless other subjects.
She simply never had the time to keep a cat.
At best, only something that required almost no companionship—like a turtle—could survive under her care for any length of time.
"Well, actually," Kaeya continued, "cats tend to be aggressive because of instinct. If you want to solve that problem, you need to deal with it at the root."
"At the root?" Jean asked.
"That's right. For example…"
Kaeya paused slightly, then smiled.
"Neutering."
"MEOW!!!"
