Chapter 429: The Beginning of the Story

After letting out a furious roar, Dvalin swung a claw at Bai Luo.

Although the attack came at close range, Bai Luo's reaction was much faster than Dvalin had expected.

Summoning his greatsword in time to block the strike, Bai Luo turned toward the direction from which the startled cry had come.

"Who's there?"

But the person who had cried out had already hidden themselves. Bai Luo only caught a glimpse of something that looked like a scarf.

Having missed his target, Dvalin glanced at the greatsword in Bai Luo's hands, and his head began to buzz once more.

Borrowing the power of the Anemo element, Dvalin beat his wings and shot into the sky, eventually disappearing beyond the horizon where the forest met the heavens.

As for Bai Luo, after taking one last look toward the source of the cry, he vanished from the spot with a thoughtful expression on his face.

Once everything had settled down, two figures cautiously poked their heads out from behind a tree.

"That was close... He almost noticed us."

Compared to being blown away by the wind stirred up by Dvalin, Paimon seemed far more afraid of the mysterious person who had been speaking with the dragon.

Even now, she clung tightly to Lumine's clothes, refusing to let go.

"You seem really scared of him."

That mysterious person had been the first human Lumine had seen since arriving in this world.

Though considering that he could converse with a dragon...

Whether he was actually human was another matter entirely.

"Umm... Paimon falling into the water was kind of his fault."

Just recalling that horrifying taste made Paimon's mouth feel uncomfortable all over again.

It was a flavor so dreadful that it seemed to penetrate her very soul.

Even now, she didn't dare touch meat.

Instead, she survived each day by eating Slimes and nibbling on Sunsettias.

"Because of him?"

Looking toward the place where Bai Luo had disappeared, Lumine's face took on a thoughtful expression.

Just as she had told Paimon about her own experiences, she had previously asked the little floating companion how she had ended up falling into the water.

Paimon's answer had been simple:

She had accidentally eaten some wild boar meat roasted by a certain individual.

The very same person who had left behind the skeleton Lumine had found on the beach.

From Paimon's fragmented descriptions, Lumine had also pieced together something else.

This person had wandered around the area where she awakened and seemed to have been searching for something.

In particular, he paid special attention to places where people had once lived.

Could it be...

Thinking about the unfamiliar god she had encountered, Lumine's breathing gradually quickened.

In the end, it was Paimon's voice that broke her train of thought.

"Traveler, look! There's something over there! Let's go take a closer look!"

Pointing toward the crystalized tears left behind by Dvalin, Paimon's words successfully drew Lumine's attention to them.

Meanwhile, Bai Luo, hidden in the shadows, watched the scene unfold with a rather complicated expression.

He had never imagined that the Traveler that he had searched for so desperately would appear before him under such dramatic circumstances.

Come to think of it...

Why did what had just happened feel so familiar?

It seemed like he had seen something similar before.

Only after the two of them picked up the crystallized tears that had fallen from Dvalin's eyes did Bai Luo finally realize what was going on.

Isn't this the scene where the Traveler first meets Venti in the game's story?

So he had really replaced the Anemo Archon and acted out Venti's role in the plot?

If that were true, then that bottle of wine had cost him quite a lot.

But when Bai Luo thought about the wine he had swapped in its place, his expression immediately brightened again.

Because that little act of replacing the wine might end up bringing him even greater amusement in the future.

Compared to that, taking the Anemo Archon's place in meeting the Traveler wasn't such a big deal.

Watching the Traveler, under Paimon's "guidance," gradually learn about the world, Bai Luo chose not to disturb them.

Instead, he quietly left the Whispering Woods and headed toward Mondstadt City.

Now that the Traveler had appeared, Mondstadt was bound to become much livelier.

And with that would come even more entertainment.

Bai Luo was already looking forward to everything that would happen once the Traveler entered Mondstadt.

By the time Bai Luo returned to Mondstadt City, the ancient city-state had once again entered a state of heightened alert.

Dvalin's appearance had thrown many of the monsters around the Whispering Woods into chaos.

Most of the creatures that fled from the forest—Hilichurls, Slimes, and the like—had gathered alarmingly close to the city. Even areas that had previously been cleared by the Knights of Favonius had once again become occupied by new monsters.

On his way back, Bai Luo saw members of the Knights fighting monsters more than once.

Unfortunately, Mondstadt had not faced an invasion of this scale in a very long time. As a result, only a handful of experienced veterans were truly capable of fighting these creatures head-on.

As for the recruits?

They were either cheering from the sidelines or crouching nearby with their heads in their hands, trembling in fear.

Which was understandable.

These were people who, at most, had spent their time chasing pigeons away or bullying Slimes. Seeing a Hilichurl's head chopped off in battle was naturally difficult for them to accept.

It would take time before they became accustomed to scenes like this.

Among all those figures, however, one person stood out.

Dressed entirely in red, she performed even better than some of the veteran knights who had already made names for themselves.

Draw.

Aim.

Release.

Every motion flowed seamlessly into the next.

More importantly, every arrow she fired served a purpose beyond simple killing.

Whenever a knight grew exhausted and let down their guard, finding themselves on the verge of being struck by a Hilichurl—two arrows imbued with the power of Pyro would appear at exactly the right moment.

As the Outrider, her eyesight far surpassed that of ordinary people.

She always seemed able to spot danger at the critical instant and save her comrades from harm.

"Amber, nice shot!"

The knights she rescued invariably held goodwill toward the kind-hearted and enthusiastic young woman.

But not everyone shared the same opinion.

"Hmph. What's so impressive? If I had a Vision, I'd be even better than her."

The speaker was a slightly overweight clerk.

Ordinarily, someone like him would never have been required to fight on the front lines.

However, hoping to make his service record look more impressive, he had ignored his superior's advice and insisted on taking up a weapon and heading to the battlefield.

In his mind, they were merely monsters much smaller than humans.

What was there to be afraid of?

Then...

A man who could barely kill a fish without getting weak in the knees when it flopped around suddenly found himself staring at severed Hilichurl limbs and decapitated bodies.

His legs immediately began shaking so badly that he could barely walk.

Even though knights were expected to embody noble virtues and never mock their comrades, he couldn't shake the feeling that everyone around him was looking at him differently now.

And seeing Amber basking in praise only made him feel more resentful.

"If that's what you think, then you're completely mistaken."

The knight assigned to protect him couldn't help speaking up after hearing his complaint.

"People like the Outrider weren't made great by their Vision. Before she ever obtained that power, she was already our finest scout."

He paused before adding:

"That's a quality someone like you could never even imagine."

The clerk's face immediately darkened.

The knight, however, paid him no mind and continued watching the battlefield.

To many people, Amber's greatest asset seemed to be her Vision.

But to those who truly knew her, the Vision was merely a tool.

What made Amber exceptional had always been her courage, dedication, and unwavering willingness to protect others. Those qualities existed long before she was ever granted a Vision.
