Chapter 108 - THE MOONLIT WATCH — A QUIET SHIFT OF THE HEART

The lanterns overhead flickered one last time before dying down to a faint, orange ember, plunging the Grand Pavilion into a heavy, suffocating darkness.

The only light remaining was the pale, silver glow of the moon filtering through the high window slats, cutting jagged lines across the wooden floor.

The room was divided by thick interior walls that created a sense of isolation even in the shared space. In the upper section of the pavilion, the silence was jagged.

Neji lay on his futon near the large storage chest and the upper entrance, his body rigid and his eyes closed tight, though his breathing was too shallow for sleep.

Below him, the girls were lined up in a row: Ino at the top, then Tenten, then Sakura, and at last Karin, their forms still beneath the blankets as they tried to process the reality of being in the past.

Lee had claimed the spot near the balcony door, his hands folded over his chest as if even in sleep he was ready for a dynamic entry.

In the lower half of the room, separated by the wide gap between the walls, the atmosphere was different.

Naruto was sprawled out on his futon, his snores muffled by the heavy bedding, completely unaware of the turmoil surrounding him.

Beside him, Sasuke lay on his side, staring at the base of the wall that stood between him and the corner. His eyes remained open, reflecting the moonlight like cold steel, his mind tracing the impossible path that had led them here.

Behind the wall on the right, the most peaceful corner of the pavilion remained tucked away in the shadows.

Mini-Sasuke was curled into a small ball on his mat, his face finally relaxed in the deep exhaustion of a child. And right beside him, Hinata was propped up on her elbow, her body forming a protective curve on her own futon.

She was trapped in that fragile state of being half-asleep and half-awake, her heavy eyelids fluttering as she watched the boy's breathing. Her presence acted as a silent shield for both the child and the boy lying just beyond the wall.

The pavilion was a map of broken spirits and quiet hopes, everyone locked in their designated spots while the world outside continued its slow drift into a past that shouldn't belong to them.

The indigo shadows of the pavilion remained heavy, but for Sakura, the silence was too loud. She wasn't thinking about medical scrolls anymore; her mind was replaying the way Sasuke had looked at Hinata before he left the shadowed corner.

"Ino!" Sakura breathed, her voice a sharp, urgent murmur as she reached up to poke the futon directly above hers. "Ino! Wake up! Did you see it? I know you saw it!"

Ino let out a sound that was half-moan, half-growl, her face still buried in her pillow. "If you're talking about the encounter with the Samurai again, I'm going to punch you in your sleep..."

"No! Not the encounter with the Samurais!" Sakura whispered, leaning in so close her forehead nearly touched the edge of Ino's mat.

"Sasuke-kun! And Hinata! Back there behind the wall! I saw the way he looked at her before he came out to yell at everyone."

One of Ino's eyes cracked open. The mention of cSasuke' and 'Hinata' acted like a bucket of cold water to her gossiping soul. She rolled onto her side, her blonde hair fanning out like a messy bird's nest in the moonlight.

"Wait..." Ino's voice was still raspy from sleep, but her eyes were suddenly sharp. "You saw it too? I thought I was just hallucinating because of the steam in the bath."

"It wasn't hallucinations!" Sakura whispered excitedly, her hands gripping her blanket. "He was so... quiet with her. And he actually let her stay there with the child! He never lets anyone into his personal space like that."

Ino sat up halfway, propping herself on an elbow as she looked toward the thick wall that hid the corner from their view.

"And Hinata... she didn't even flinch when he was being all 'Savage Sasuke-kun' to the rest of us. She just stayed back there, like she was his anchor or something."

While Ino's eyes were wide with the thrill of the discovery, Sakura's expression shifted, the initial spark of gossip fading into a heavy, aching tightness in her chest.

Sakura looked down at her hands, her fingers twisting the fabric of her blanket. "It's just... it's different when it's her, isn't it?" she whispered, her voice trembling with a sadness she couldn't hide.

"I've chased him since we were children, Ino. I've memorized every shadow on his face, every cold word. But tonight, seeing him with Hinata... he looked like he found a home I could never build for him."

Ino's smirk softened into a look of genuine sympathy. She reached out, placing a hand on Sakura's arm. "Oh, Sakura..."

"I'm not angry," Sakura murmured, a single tear catching the light as it fell.

"But it hurts. Knowing that while the world is falling apart, the person I love is finally finding peace—and I'm just a spectator."

Determined to shake off the melancholy, Ino gave Sakura's arm a firm squeeze.

"Well, we aren't going to get any answers sitting here crying. Come on. Let's see if she's actually still awake or if she's just dreaming about him."

Moving with the silence of seasoned kunoichi, the two girls slid out from under their blankets. They crept past the sleeping forms of Tenten and Karin, their feet barely making a sound on the tatami as they moved toward the thick interior wall.

They reached the edge of the partition and peered around the corner into the secluded space.

The sight was enough to make Sakura's heart sink even further. Hinata was still there, propped up on her elbow on her futon.

Her back was visible to them, her long hair cascading down her purple clothes as she watched over the sleeping Mini-Sasuke.

She was half-asleep, her body forming a protective curve around the child, yet she remained a vigilant shield in the dark.

"Look at them," Ino whispered, her voice a barely audible thread of sound that seemed to vibrate in the cold air.

"I didn't think he'd actually let her stay that close after everything that's happened today. Since we started this timeline jump, he's been like a stone wall."

Sakura bit her lip, her gaze fixed on the quiet silhouette of Hinata's back. "He didn't just let her stay, Ino," she murmured, her voice laced with that quiet, heavy sadness.

"He looked at her... and the anger just drained out of him. It was like she was the only one who could actually reach him while he was in that state."

"And Hinata's not even nervous," Ino added, leaning a bit closer to the partition, her curiosity finally satisfied by the stillness of the corner.

"She's just... there. Like it's the most natural thing in the world for her to be the one guarding his side tonight."

Sakura let out a faint, shaky breath, the sight of Hinata's peaceful devotion finally becoming too much to bear. "We should go back," she whispered, her voice cracking slightly.

"If they wake up and see us spying, it will only make things harder tomorrow."

Ino gave Sakura's arm a final, supportive squeeze. "You're right. Let's get some sleep. We're going to need it."

Without another word, the two girls pulled back from the edge of the wall. They retreated across the tatami with ghost-like steps, sliding back into their blankets as the heavy silence of the pavilion swallowed them once more.

Within minutes, the rhythmic sound of their steady breathing joined the rest of the room, leaving the corner in total, undisturbed shadow.

The heavy silence of the pavilion settled back into place, thick and undisturbed as the last of the girls' footsteps faded into the shadows.

The room was a graveyard of quiet breathing, the air chilled by the frost gathering on the window slats.

From the deep, suffocating darkness near the center wall, a soft, sharp sound barely stirred the air—a faint

"TCHH."

It was a ghost of a noise, a flicker of private annoyance that didn't even wake anyone.

Then, slowly, a pair of eyes opened.

They were not the cold, dark black eyes of the Uchiha nor the pure ones of the Hyuga.

Instead, they were a deep, mesmerizing blue. In the jagged silver moonlight filtering through the high slats, the color looked ethereal—vibrant and clear, like a hidden sea catching the moonlight.

They glowed with a quiet, piercing beauty, reflecting the moon in a way that made the harsh darkness around them seem to soften.

The gaze remained fixed on the ceiling for a long moment, the brilliant blue unblinking and deep, as if tracing the very threads of the conversation that had just ended but that was not the case.
