On the night Cyberpunk: Edgerunners aired, the cast and crew also took to social media to say farewell to their characters.
Andrew Garfield said: "I'm so glad to have met the character David Martinez. This is the best role I've ever had as an actor, and I think I will never forget it.
David Martinez—born great, died glorious."
Scarlett Johansson: "This has been a truly wonderful journey. I'm very grateful to have Lucy by my side. When I first heard this story from Gilbert, I couldn't wait to be part of it."
Emma Roberts: "Rebecca is really adorable. I love her so much. Thanks to director Gilbert for giving me this opportunity to play Rebecca. I don't think I'll ever forget this role."
Jason Statham: "My God, this series is simply a masterpiece. I remember telling my friends the first time that I was going to be in a Gilbert project, and their shocked expressions.
"Now, all of them have become fans of the show."
Other cast members also posted farewells to their characters. Fans commented, liked, and shared, creating a harmonious scene.
But when it came to Dwayne Johnson, the situation changed.
After he posted, many viewers seemed to find an outlet and began furiously attacking him in the comments. All because Adam Samsher killed so many people in the show, including many fans' favorite, Rebecca.
"Someone! Kill Adam! Save Rebecca!"
"Please, give me a chance to avenge Rebecca! I want to take down Adam Samsher!"
"You bastard, you twisted cyber-modder! Don't think we'll forgive you!"
"Give me back Rebecca and David!"
Dwayne Johnson looked at the comments on his social media and didn't know whether to laugh or cry. His character had gone viral—but for being hated.
From another perspective, it showed that his character was extremely well-crafted.
Dwayne Johnson had entered movies early, appearing as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns. He later starred in solo films, though they were only moderately successful.
This time, though it was a series, Adam Samsher exceeded his expectations in terms of standout performance, which Dwayne had never anticipated.
His agent had strongly advised him to take the series, and now the reward had come.
More importantly, he made a good impression on Gilbert. A few days after filming wrapped, Gilbert called to praise his performance and said they would collaborate again in the future.
This delighted Dwayne Johnson. He signed a letter of intent with Melon Studio, committing to work on at least four films with them.
As for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, viewers left various comments. Many wanted to "cut down" director Gilbert and Adam Samsher, while others were amusing.
"Warning: After watching Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, you may develop cyberpsychosis, symptoms include but are not limited to:
1. Frantically searching Watermelon Video for related content like clips, explanations, and trailers.
2. Wanting to rewatch the series to relive this extraordinary journey, even if you've already seen it countless times.
3. Obsessively recalling plot points before sleep, feeling unsettled.
4. Looping the show's soundtrack endlessly, even after the music ends, still stuck in your head.
5. Hunting down anyone named Adam Samsher, even if you can't.
6. Main symptom: outwardly tough while wearing sunglasses, saying 'I didn't cry' despite inner unrest.
7. If you have these symptoms, you may have a new type of cyberpsychosis. Please contact your cybernetic doctor for treatment immediately."
Some analyzed what David would be like working in a company: "Even if David joined Arasaka, it would be 16-hour workdays, year-round, fueled by stimulants.
"Lucky if military tech grants five days off per year, and he'd still have to loan money for cyberware."
Others explained the origin of cyberpsychosis: "Cyberpsychosis is a social disease, caused by excessive mental stress among today's youth.
"Some develop it from just installing an artificial liver or a fake knee. Most cyberpsychosis cases go unnoticed, left to fester in corners.
"Only those with advanced cyberware can be officially called cyberpsychotic."
Many reflected on David Martinez's fate: "Honestly, when I saw David plan to equip the Sandevistan, I knew there were only two possible outcomes.
"One: using his so-called innate talent to break the world's rules.
"Two: burning himself out like a torch in the rain, destined not to go out.
"His initial power came from the outside—the military cyberware gave him his first chance to resist.
"What did he fight for later? Responsibility? Willpower? Passion? All illusions. The result would likely be failure.
"When the opposing power exceeds him, what else does he have beyond cyberware? His fate was destined for downfall and indeed, it was.
"Yet even knowing the outcome, the torch burned so brightly it cannot be ignored."
Such discussions, in effect, increased Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' popularity and hype, keeping it alive in fans' minds even after the finale.
Of course, no work can be universally loved. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is not flawless—some like it, some do not.
However, after episodes seven and eight aired, many anti-Gilbert media outlets began setting the narrative.
The Washington Post ran an article titled "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Is Just Gilbert's Fantasies," publishing a lengthy piece explaining why the series could not be considered excellent.
Another major North American newspaper, The New York Times, had its commentator Mark Davis publicly write in the paper, criticizing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, claiming that Gilbert harbored ill intentions and was harming society.
These media reports made it seem as if Gilbert had committed some heinous crime.
But anyone with even a little sense, reading their articles carefully, would notice that most of the arguments were baseless.
The Los Angeles Times quickly rebutted, saying that if all the accusations in the papers against Gilbert were true, then all of Hollywood should be executed, because everyone did the same things.
The media on both sides started a war of words, though Gilbert's side temporarily fell behind in mainstream outlets.
Online, however, it was a completely different scene.
Loyal fans of the series and Gilbert's followers went after the trolling black ops and water armies. Typically, in a single chat room, the moment a troll posted a comment criticizing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, they would be chased and flooded with hundreds of counter-comments.
Most of the current water armies were still human-operated, and many were overwhelmed by the backlash, confessing they could not handle it.
Of course, there were side effects, such as accidentally affecting innocent bystanders. But to defend Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the fans felt it was necessary.
Another consequence was that trolls and black ops began lowering Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' scores on IMDb, with some of the reviews being downright ridiculous.
