Matthew's lips twitched slightly as he saw all the layers of spells "protecting" Felicity.
He immediately understood that Felicity had never been in any real danger.
He even suspected that an extraordinary spellcaster might be invisibly following and protecting her.
What Matthew didn't expect was that as soon as his attention shifted away from Felicity, her previous "+5" luck value turned into pitch-black "-5"!
At that moment, an indescribable sense of dread surged into Matthew's heart.
It was as if some fatal threat was quickly closing in on him.
"Is there an enemy?"
"No!"
Matthew quickly closed his eyes and sensed his body, realizing there was no immediate danger.
Then it hit him, and he silently checked his attribute panel:
Luck: -5 (Catastrophe)!
A sense of panic flashed through his mind.
"No, where did things go wrong?"
Matthew instinctively took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down.
He didn't let this sudden change throw him into disarray, and instead of focusing on Felicity, he began to carefully analyze:
"If it wasn't a sudden attack, then it must be a natural progression into danger..."
"That means my previous actions have led to this impending danger."
Glancing at the oblivious Felicity, Matthew shook his head in frustration.
Felicity's luck was still "+5"!
But mine has turned into "-5"!
"Something's not right!"
This bizarre situation gave Matthew a headache.
He couldn't quite figure out the connection between Felicity and the upcoming danger!
If he had a choice, he would certainly prefer to avoid this mess.
But now, even if he returned Felicity, it would only make things worse.
Matthew rubbed his forehead in frustration, cursing "Fate's Choice" in his heart:
"It's always so prompt with its warnings, yet when it comes to life and death, it doesn't give me a heads-up."
Though he grumbled, Matthew knew well that blaming fate wouldn't help; solving the danger was the priority.
He looked at the shivering Felicity and sighed inwardly, casting a mana shield on her.
Seeing her grateful expression, Matthew could now pretty much conclude:
He was caught in an undeserved disaster!
But Matthew didn't want to dwell on it.
He signaled Yaya to fly as fast as possible.
Yaya sensed Matthew's unease. Though she didn't know what had happened, she obediently followed his instructions.
Within a couple of minutes, Yaya returned them to the murloc camp.
She released Matthew and Felicity, then pretended to yawn and quickly ducked into a tent.
Matthew nodded at Angela as she approached and said to Felicity:
"Don't think about the altar and ruins anymore. That's not something you can deal with right now."
"Stay in the camp tonight. Angela will arrange things for you."
After much thought, Matthew didn't reveal Felicity's identity but also chose not to interact with her further.
His mind was consumed with the impending "Catastrophe"!
That was the real problem!
Based on his knowledge of the Pale Church, Matthew was certain they were familiar with the ruins or had plans for them, hence their preparations.
As for the unexpected encounter with Felicity, Matthew didn't think it was a coincidence.
Matthew even suspected that he had already been pulled into a larger conspiracy.
Unfortunately, things had escalated too quickly, forcing Matthew to react on the spot!
Matthew entered the tent, sitting cross-legged as his consciousness quickly shifted.
Bay Town, Lord's Manor.
As soon as his consciousness returned, Matthew instinctively rubbed his temples.
He organized his thoughts and prepared to consider how to deal with the upcoming crisis.
The Pale Church was one issue!
These evil scum—they were bound to stir up trouble.
Matthew could pretty much guess their goal: something hidden within the underground ruins.
The Pale Church's actions were usually straightforward and direct.
Although personal grudges existed, they typically didn't complicate matters unnecessarily.
Matthew didn't believe he had enough "charisma" to attract the Pale Church's attention at this stage.
Whether or not the Pale Church noticed the mutated altar was still up in the air.
Moreover, the fact that the Pale Church had targeted this ruin indicated that the ruins themselves were quite extraordinary.
Matthew could confidently assume that the first person to discover the ruins was likely placed there by the Pale Church.
If the Pale Church had sufficient power, they wouldn't have caused such a public uproar.
The reverse information gave Matthew some peace of mind.
At the very least, Matthew and Bay Territory still had a chance to fight back!
But the real headache was Annie Yao Moon, the Governor of the Eastern Province.
As a true governor of the Netheril Empire,
Annie was among the highest-ranking individuals, second only to the Sevinton Council.
Not to mention, as the governor of a province, Annie herself had to possess extraordinary abilities as a high-level Arcanist!
In terms of power and influence, Annie was far beyond Matthew's current reach, even considering the backing of the Ser Family.
Without knowing Annie's intentions, Matthew was reluctant to have much contact with Felicity.
At the same time, this sudden incident had served as a wake-up call for Matthew.
He needed to increase his strength as quickly as possible!
Even though his Luck stat was still +1, Matthew still felt uneasy.
The feeling of being powerless left him feeling unsettled.
After some contemplation, Matthew decisively walked into the secret chamber, where Yaya, sensing his tension, stared at him curiously.
"What happened?"
Gently patting her head and noticing how much she had grown, Matthew blinked with a hint of regret.
Yaya was still too small!
Time was of the essence, and there wasn't enough to let Yaya fully master her bloodline and evolve again.
So, Matthew had no choice but to focus on himself!
With this in mind, Matthew laid out all his cards, carefully calculating his resources.
Experience Points: 56,000
Skill Points: 12
Fate Coins: 5,000
Using the experience points to level up would raise Matthew's class level to 7.
But the difference in combat power between a low-level Arcanist and a mid-level Arcanist wasn't enough to counter the "-5" Catastrophe.
The effects of skill points were similarly insufficient.
So, Matthew's last hope lay in his 5,000 Fate Coins.
These were his rewards for saving 5,000 people from certain death and giving them a second chance at life!
Now, he needed to turn his own certain death "fate" around!
