Chapter 123 - The Egg Hatched Between Two Winters

The chick called from inside the shell, and the road tried to drag it out.

Black filament tightened in the feeding latch. The beak-sized notch pulled open with a gasp of sea air, while the dormant seam above it ground toward Aylin's shoulder.

Aylin threw her weight off the visible catch.

Kedra dropped on the shadowless lane at the same moment. The adult seam slammed shut between them, close enough to catch a strand of Aylin's hair. The feeding notch remained open beneath it.

Cold poured through. Over the cracked egg, the unnamed male crouched lower. His feet shook on the bronze rest, yet he kept the pale curve level beneath his brood fold.

Gredudande sent the chick's first call through the Antarctic bar.

White-Nape answered. Pale-Cheek changed. Their living voices struck the hollow from one side.

From the other came the copied male, copied mate, and copied chick, each preserved at the instant before the egg's newest crack.

None of the stolen voices moved the male.
