Chapter 548 - Chapter 548: Defense Against the Dark Arts Class

On Tuesday morning, it was time for Defense Against the Dark Arts. Wade arrived just in time outside the classroom and saw Slytherin and Ravenclaw students crowded in the hallway, chatting. The door to the classroom hadn't even been opened yet.

"What's going on, is the door locked?" Wade walked over and asked, "Or did the location for class change?"

"No," Padma, who had been chatting with Lisa, turned around with a troubled expression and said, "It's just that… you know… we're being taught by Professor Moody now…"

Compared to the friendly and approachable Professor Troka, the new professor was an overwhelming contrast — Padma still hadn't quite adjusted.

But Wade didn't pick up on their hesitation or fear. Every time he went home during the holidays, he would often see Moody. After getting used to it, that face didn't seem so frightening anymore.

So Wade casually said, "Yeah, I've been looking forward to learning a few tricks from him."

He pushed through the students in the hallway and reached for the oak door.

Creeeaaak—

Moody was already seated on a tall stool at the front of the classroom, leaning on his staff. His grizzled hair was messy, and his scar-covered face showed no expression.

His one normal black eye stared at the door as if facing a dangerous enemy, while his large magical blue eye spun wildly in all directions and then it suddenly rolled inward, leaving only a white eyeball visible.

The students who had been chatting outside instantly fell silent and tiptoed cautiously into the classroom behind Wade.

At that moment, the class bell rang, and a few stragglers hurried to their seats.

Moody seemed indifferent to the students' wary, fearful, or even disgusted glances. He pulled out the class register and began calling roll.

When he got to Draco Malfoy's name, Moody paused for a second, swept his eyes up and down over him, said nothing, then moved on to the next.

After finishing the roll call, Moody slowly stood up with the support of his cane, glanced at the textbooks on the students' desks, and said: "Put them away. No theory lesson today."

Everyone packed their books back into their bags. With a wave of his wand, Moody slammed the previously open door shut with a loud "BANG!", startling several students.

Then he flicked his wand again, and all the desks and chairs seemed to grow legs and quickly scuttled to the corners of the room — leaving only a group of students standing in the center, wands in hand.

Moody stepped down from the platform. His wooden leg thudded as he walked among them and his magical eye spun like mad, sweeping over the class.

He growled, "Defense Against the Dark Arts isn't about memorizing textbooks! What you need to learn is how to survive when facing Dark Magic — how to stay alive in front of a real Dark wizard."

With a sudden flick of his wand, Goyle — who had been secretly stuffing something into his mouth — flew across the room without even a scream. He only let out a cry when he slammed into the wall.

The students all jumped, and those closest to Moody quickly backed away.

Michael suddenly had a bad feeling. He glanced at Wade as if to say — Why do you always like professors like this?

It was clear Moody's style reminded him of Abigail — both were the kind who would strike without warning and didn't hesitate to discipline students physically.

Wade gave a small smile and silently mouthed: "Stay alert."

"Did you see that?" Moody snorted.

"Dark wizards won't warn you. They won't follow any dueling etiquette — they won't wait for you to be ready. They'll strike when you least expect it! You must be prepared. Stay vigilant!"

He suddenly gave a small flick of his wand mid-sentence— a flash of red light knocked Michael off his feet. Another red spell shot toward Wade, but it was blocked by an invisible shield.

The spell deflected and hit Pansy instead; the girl let out a scream, and now there were two more students lying on the floor of the classroom.

Moody looked at Wade with some surprise, his magical eye also fixed on him. After a moment, he said: "Nice Shield Charm."

Wade gave a slight nod and said nothing, but also no longer dared to whisper to anyone.

His eyes focused on Moody's hand — he noticed that the two Disarming Charms had been cast in very quick succession, and the casting motions were subtle. Just that kind of combat technique alone was worth learning.

"Very good. Someone blocked my spell — but clearly, the rest of you don't have that ability..."

Moody saw several students getting up from the floor and glaring at him accusingly — Pansy in particular looked furious. He grinned.

That expression, on his scarred face, was quite terrifying.

"What's wrong? Think it's unfair?" Moody turned to the Slytherin side and looked at Pansy. "Do you think I should've counted down — three, two, one — and waited for you to be ready before casting a spell? Would that be more professor-like?"

"Shouldn't you?" Pansy said through gritted teeth. "You're a professor, not a Dark wizard! That's why we weren't prepared!"

"Fair point..." Moody didn't get angry. In a gruff voice, he said: "But that's your first lesson — remember this: Always stay alert, no matter who you're dealing with!"

He then walked over to Draco Malfoy, looked at him and asked: "I remember you were at the World Cup final, right? Tell me — when the leprechauns attacked the camp, did you get any warning?"

All the students turned to look at them. The classroom fell completely silent.

Malfoy stared at him with a stiff expression and said: "No, sir."

"Were you hurt?" Moody asked again.

"No, sir." Malfoy replied.

"Why not?" Moody leaned in close, and his scarred face loomed large in Malfoy's view. He asked: "Did the leprechauns show you mercy?"

"No," Malfoy answered stiffly. "We ran into the forest."

"See? If you had all acted like Malfoy that night at the camp, you wouldn't be asking dumb questions like 'Why would someone attack without warning?'"

Moody turned away from Malfoy and resumed pacing among the students, growling as he walked:

"Real attacks always come suddenly — and so does death! But you won't have his luck to survive something like that!"

Wade glanced at the pale-faced Malfoy and thought that when Moody said "luck," he probably should have said "parents" instead.

"You can't just learn magic by the book — you need to be ready for the most dangerous and chaotic situations!" Moody barked. "Now, pair up. Start practicing Shield Charms… I want to see what you're made of!"

With another flick of his wand, dozens of thick cushions appeared around the room. Moody returned to the platform and turned to see that most of the students were still standing there blankly, seemingly waiting for instructions on how to pair up.

"Move!" Moody roared. "The enemy is right next to you! What are you waiting for — for them to make the first move?"

Whoosh—

With a flash of spell light, Wade promptly knocked Michael out of the round.
