Chapter 257 - Chapter 255. The World-Eater’s Seed

Chapter 255. The World-Eater's Seed

Since the moment Thanos had first tasted the nectar of the Void, his mind had become a vessel for secrets that defied the laws of the universe. Strange, jagged geometries of thought and forbidden rituals had taken root in his consciousness, whispers from the Great Abyss that he welcomed as divine guidance.

Now, in the crushing silence of the planet's heart, he prepared to use that dark wisdom. The corrosive energy of the Void had been waning, a setback he would not tolerate. Thanos held the quivering violet mass before him, his eyes igniting like twin stars. He began to draw upon the reserve of power within his own marrow, a cold, suffocating energy that made his skin shimmer with an unnatural luster.

He funneled this power into the fleshy lump. Under the onslaught of his will, the remains of Corvus began to scream in a frequency beyond hearing. The meat bubbled and boiled, losing its organic texture. It compressed, folding in on itself until the gore was gone, replaced by a crystal as smooth as polished glass and as hard as a neutron star. Within its depths, glowing veins of violet light wove themselves into intricate, eldritch runes—a language of power that had existed before the first sun was born.

Thanos exhaled, his breath a puff of steam in the intense heat. He was drained, his chest heaving, but the work was done. What lay before him was no longer a corpse, but a massive violet orb, a jewel the size of a man that thrummed with the heartbeat of a dark god.

Without a moment's rest, Thanos reached out and pressed the orb against the solid iron wall of the planet's inner core. There was no resistance. The metal seemed to yield, welcoming the foreign object as the sphere sank into the white-hot iron. With a final, forceful shove, Thanos watched as the orb vanished into the very center of the world.

He let his hands fall, closing his eyes to feel the resonance. He could sense the alien energy beginning its descent into the absolute center of the planet's mass. It tore through the dense iron and nickel as if they were nothing more than morning mist.

When it reached the dead center, Thanos felt a click—a cosmic alignment. A cruel smile touched his lips. He slammed his right fist into his open palm, sending a pulse of command through the layers of the earth. In response, the orb flared with a blinding, necrotic light, flash-melting a small chamber for itself within the core. It anchored there, a parasite at the heart of the world.

Thanos nodded, the final stage of the ritual beginning. «Awaken,» he whispered.

The violet light on his hand surged once more, acting as a catalyst. Deep within the core, the orb began to crack. But it was not breaking; it was hatching. From the fissures, glowing, thread-like tendrils began to crawl. They were roots of pure Void energy, and they moved with a hungry, predatory intent. They pierced the compressed metal of the core, branching and thickening, weaving a web of corruption that began to claim the planet's vitals.

A moment later, a thick, violet root erupted from the metal wall right beside Thanos, pulsing with a sick, rhythmic light. His work was complete. Within days, these roots would encompass the entire globe, drinking the planet's natural energies and replacing them with the cold fire of the Void.

This transformed world would become a factory of darkness, an endless wellspring of power to replenish his armies and forge a new path of conquest. Satisfied, Thanos turned and began his ascent back to the surface. The invasion of the stars was only just beginning.

Earth

«Hey! You! Stay right there! Drop what's in your hands, now!» The officer's voice cracked the stillness of a dark New York alley, his service weapon trembling as he aimed it into the gloom.

The Battle of New York had left the city a jagged ribcage of steel and glass. Most of the civilians had been herded away by the National Guard, moved to makeshift shelters to allow the grim work of reclamation to begin.

The aftermath was a theater of hazards. In traditional warfare, the stench of decay and the risk of plague from the fallen were the primary concerns. But here, the stakes were stranger. Alien technology lay scattered like glass shards, some of it still humming with unstable power. One wrong move, one curious hand, and a city block could vanish in a burst of plasma.

Fortunately, the Chitauri did not bleed as men did, leaving behind a sterile, metallic battlefield rather than one of gore. Yet, the danger remained. No one knew what microscopic horrors or extraterrestrial viruses lurked within the jagged carapaces of the invaders.

Specialized containment teams in lead-lined suits moved like ghosts through the streets, gingerly lifting the remains of the alien soldiers. The NYPD worked the perimeter, their eyes sharp for looters or, worse, Chitauri stragglers hiding in the subway tunnels.

But where there is chaos, there is opportunity for the desperate and the cruel. Some had refused the evacuation orders—low-lifes and gang-bangers who saw the ruined city as a treasure chest waiting to be cracked.

In a darkened street, a group of armed men had surrounded the entrance to a local bank. They didn't carry handguns or crowbars. They carried the long, sleek rifles of the Chitauri, weapons they had scavenged from the outskirts of the battle.

Inside the bank, the air was thick with the smell of ozone and burnt carpet. A massive hole had been blasted through the vault door. Several men were frantically stuffing duffel bags with stacks of bills, their stolen alien guns propped against their hips.

«Boss! We're boxed in! The blue-suits are everywhere!» one of the lookouts hissed, his eyes darting to the shadows of the street.

«Let 'em come!» the leader barked, his voice filled with a manic, unearned confidence. «We got the firepower now. Let 'em try and stop us. Once we got the green, we'll blast our way through and be sipping drinks in Mexico before the Avengers even know we were here!»

«You're right, Boss. We just—wait. Who the hell are you?! How'd you get in here?»
