Absolute darkness was all that reigned beneath the dull, dense emerald glow into which the Robonoid had transformed.
At that moment, my senses flared, becoming far sharper than they had ever been on any previous mission. Thanks to that heightened awareness, I could clearly feel the physical rigidity and tension gripping my teammates. They shared my vigilance, but their faces had begun to show very different emotions: confusion and fear.
Amethyst glanced rapidly in every direction, her muscles so tense that the slightest change in our surroundings would have sent her into violent action. Pearl, meanwhile, kept her gaze fixed somewhere between the natural stone and the green crystalline cable-like structures that grew denser and more numerous the farther we descended. Garnet remained completely silent, but her mouth was twisted into such an obvious frown that it felt almost unnatural. This was one of the first times Nora had ever witnessed a genuine expression on the fusion's face, completely breaking her usual stoicism.
The green crystalline shell, shining like polished gemstone, descended through the tunnel at breathtaking speed. Despite how fast we were moving, it still took over a full minute to reach the bottom. It was a tense, suffocating minute during which I had no idea what to say or do to ease my team's obvious anxiety.
The only thing I managed was letting out a quiet sigh, hoping to calm my own nerves. Somehow, the lingering memory of his trademark teasing smile brought me a small measure of comfort.
When the descent finally ended, the sound of shifting stone echoed softly as the inverted pyramid locked into place, followed by a streak of energy racing through the structure.
Before us, the Robonoid's frame folded inward with a low mechanical hum, revealing the vastness of a hidden chamber that completely defied the crude nature of the surrounding underground rock.
The green light that had accompanied us spread throughout the room, activating an intricate network of glowing geometric patterns that stretched across an enormous hexagonal pit like the facets of a giant emerald.
We stood at the edge of an elevated platform connected to a colossal inverted pyramid. Its dark blue-green sloping walls descended symmetrically into the depths below. Brilliant neon-green lines outlined each of the hexagonal edges, separating the crystalline alloy from the lifeless stone and forming a series of perfect hexagonal rings.
At the very center of the chamber's floor, an enormous Gem, or perhaps a crystal vaguely shaped like a heart, remained embedded within the structure, pulsing with a sickly green glow that somehow looked more disgusting every second.
The most disturbing part, however, wasn't the perfect symmetry of Homeworld's technology.
It was what surrounded it.
The entire outer edge of the technological pit was wrapped in a dense mass of dark, tubular growths. They looked like twisted conduits clinging to the rock like blind tentacles, intertwining themselves with the pristine circuitry of the inverted pyramid.
Suddenly, a blinding beam of light shot through the structure.
The green energy raced in a straight line along every channel until the entire system completed its circuit.
At that moment, a perfect pillar of light rose from the center, directly in front of the floating core, lifting with it a control console built exclusively for Gem technology.
The top of the console unfolded into the unmistakable shape of an upright hand, patiently waiting for something to rest upon it and activate the system.
Before I could process what was happening, Garnet, visibly shaken, grabbed the three of us with surprising force.
She carried us downward at incredible speed, hiding us beneath the slope of the inverted pyramid to shield us from whatever was about to activate that machine.
With a wet mechanical hum that echoed through the stone chamber, the pyramid released a dense drop of the material it was made from.
The substance bounced against the floor like a rubber ball until, the moment it stabilized, it took on a very familiar shape.
A Robonoid.
This one wasn't enormous, though. It was the same small size as when Peridot had used the Galaxy Warp.
The little machine moved with flawless mechanical precision until it reached the control pillar.
With a sharp metallic snap, it positioned itself directly over the hand-shaped mold and pulled an internal mechanism.
The response was immediate.
The entire hexagonal structure lit up brilliantly, revealing that the enormous sloping walls descending toward the core were actually gigantic monitors, each roughly the size of a small car.
The massive crystal at the center pulsed violently, firing a vertical beam of light that filled the chamber with static and interference for a brief instant.
The heavy silence from my teammates only made my anxiety worse.
Out of the corner of my eye, and through my senses, I could feel their furrowed brows and the stiffness in their bodies. Their weapons were already in hand, ready to strike at the slightest sign of hostility.
When the enormous hexagonal display finally stabilized and the static disappeared, an unmistakably familiar face, rigid and geometric in every feature, appeared at the center of the chamber.
Peridot.
