Chapter 28 - Training Camp 4

The final day arrived with a quiet tension that lingered in the air like the calm before a storm. For an entire week, they had endured the burden of the baggy weighted vests: thick, awkward, and unforgiving. Every sprint had felt like dragging chains. Every jump had been cut short. Every dribble had turned sluggish and uncooperative, as if their own bodies resisted them.

Now, at last, it was time to take them off.

The team gathered on the court in the late afternoon, the sun dipping just enough to cast long shadows across the asphalt. Sweat clung to their skin, their shirts damp and heavy beneath the vests they had worn day after day. Their breathing was steady, but their bodies carried the fatigue of relentless training.

Renji stood at the center, a basketball tucked under his arm. His gaze swept across his teammates, each one hardened, each one changed. The struggles of the past week were etched into their movements, but so was something else.

Growth.

"Alright," Renji said, his voice calm but firm. "This is it."

No long speech. No dramatic buildup. Just a simple signal.

"Take them off."

For a moment, no one moved.

Then, almost at once, the sound of straps loosening filled the air. One by one, the players shrugged off their weighted vests, letting them fall to the ground with dull thuds. The sudden lightness was almost disorienting.

A few of them blinked.

One stretched his arms, his eyes widening slightly. Another shifted his feet, testing the ground beneath him as if unsure it was real.

"Feels… weird," one of the guards muttered.

"Too light," another added.

Renji nodded. "Good. That means it worked."

He bounced the ball once, the sharp echo snapping their attention back into focus.

"Let's play. First Years versus Second Years!"

No hesitation followed.

The teams split quickly, muscle memory guiding them into formation. There was no need for elaborate planning. This game wasn't about strategy alone, it was about feeling the difference.

The ball was checked in and everything changed. The first movement came from the point guard Shiki. Who instinctively pushed forward. His dribble, once heavy and slow, now snapped against the ground with crisp precision. His feet moved faster than he expected, and for a split second, he almost lost control.

But then he adjusted.

And accelerated.

"Whoa!"

He blew past his defender with a speed that hadn't been there before. The defender reacted late, caught off guard by the sudden burst. It wasn't just faster but it was explosive.

The guard drove into the lane and kicked the ball out to the wing.

The pass zipped through the air. Sharp and Effortless.

The receiver caught it and immediately went into motion. His steps felt lighter, his body responding faster than his mind could keep up. He drove toward the basket, planting his foot and leaped higher than before.

Far higher than he had all week.

His eyes widened mid-air as the rim seemed closer than it had ever been.

"NO WAY!"

He slammed the ball down with a resounding dunk, the sound echoing across the court.

For a brief moment, there was silence.

Then.....

"WHAT?!"

"That was insane!"

"You couldn't even reach the rim yesterday!"

The player landed, staring at his own hands as if they belonged to someone else.

"I… I didn't even try that hard…"

Renji smirked slightly.

"That's the point."

The game resumed, but now the energy had completely shifted.

The dunkers, who had struggled just to graze the rim days ago, now attacked it with renewed ferocity. Their jumps were sharper, their hang time longer. Each leap carried a confidence that had been absent before.

One after another, they soared.

A fast break developed. The ball was stolen cleanly, and in an instant, two players sprinted down the court. Their strides were longer, their speed noticeably greater.

"Lob it!" one shouted.

The pass went up high.

For a split second, it looked too high.

But then, a figure rose.

He launched himself off the ground, his body cutting through the air with newfound explosiveness. His hand met the ball at its peak! And slammed it down.

An alley-oop! The court erupted with shouts.

"AGAIN!"

"Kevin, DO THAT AGAIN!"

Even the players on the opposing side couldn't help but grin.

This was different.

Everything was different.

The point guards, once slowed by the weights, now moved like lightning. Their dribbles were tighter, their crossovers sharper. One executed a quick hesitation move that completely froze his defender before bursting past him.

"Too fast…!" the defender muttered, trying to recover.

But it was already too late.

A pull-up jumper followed, smooth, balanced, and precise.

Swish.

Even the centers felt the change. Their footwork in the paint was quicker, their reactions sharper. Rebounds that once slipped from their grasp were now secured with authority.

Every movement carried a sense of control.

Every action felt amplified.

Renji watched it all unfold, his eyes keen.

This was what he had been aiming for.

The weight training hadn't just built strength, it had recalibrated their bodies. Forced adaptation. Enhanced muscle memory. Now, without the burden, their true speed and power were finally unleashed.

The game continued at an intense pace.

Passes were faster. Cuts were sharper. Defense was tighter. Even their communication had improved, their voices clear and decisive as they moved in sync.

It wasn't perfect.

Mistakes still happened. Missed shots. Slight misreads.

But the difference was undeniable.

By the time the game ended, everyone was breathing hard, but not from exhaustion alone but from excitement.

They gathered at center court, some bent over with their hands on their knees, others standing tall but grinning.

"That felt… amazing," one said between breaths.

"I feel like I can move however I want now," another added.

"My jumps, did you see that?! I've never jumped that high!"

Renji bounced the ball lightly, then caught it.

"This is your real baseline now," he said. "What you felt today, that's what you've built over the week."

He looked around at each of them.

"But don't get comfortable. If you stop here, you'll lose it just as fast."

The excitement didn't fade, but it sharpened into determination.

The sun had nearly set by the time they finally packed up. The court grew quieter, the echoes of their game fading into the evening air.

One by one, they picked up their belongings, including the weighted vests now lying on the ground.

They looked different now. Not as burdens but as tools. Something to return to.

Something that had changed them.

"Same time tomorrow?" someone asked.

Renji slung his bag over his shoulder. "We'll see. Don't be late if we do."

A few chuckles followed.

Then, slowly, they began to head home.

The streets were calmer now, the sky painted in shades of orange and fading blue. Their steps were lighter, not just physically, but mentally.

They had felt the result of their effort. The proof that the struggle had been worth it.

As they walked, conversations sparked. Replaying moments from the game, laughing over surprising plays, already thinking about how to improve even more.

Renji walked slightly ahead, silent but thoughtful.

"This team…They were changing. And if they kept pushing like this. They wouldn't just improve. They would become something formidable." Renji told May.

"Yeah," She replied.

Behind him, the others continued talking, their voices filled with energy despite the long week they had endured.

The weight had fallen away.

But the strength remained.

And as the night settled in, they all entered the bus and went home. And one thing's for sure. They would never be the same again.
