Chapter 12 - Chapter Ten: The Television Was Too Loud

Hayvenhurst, Encino, Los Angeles, California

April 29th, 1992 — 3:22 p.m.

The television was too loud because nobody had meant to be listening.

That was how it happened in houses with children. The set stayed on beneath ordinary life, not quite watched and not quite ignored, a square of moving weather in the corner of a room where toast went cold, crayons rolled under furniture, and adults told themselves they were only keeping an eye on things.

At Hayvenhurst, the television sat in the family room with the sound turned high enough to make the newsreader part of the furniture. Aerial footage moved across the screen. Roads. Cars. Men running. Smoke starting to thicken over Los Angeles like something large had placed a dirty hand across the sky.

Lisa stood with one hand on the back of the sofa.

She had been in motion all day: children, phone calls, security updates, Priscilla's quiet instructions, Katherine's voice from another room, Danny trying to reach her between recording obligations and traffic reports. Motion had helped. Motion made fear practical. You could put fear into bags, snacks, windows checked twice, doors locked, children kept away from glass.

The television made fear sit down.

Julian was two years old, sitting on the carpet with a red crayon in one hand and a green one in the other, apparently trying to decide whether the paper deserved either. His curls had become fully ridiculous by then, thick and dark around a face still soft with babyhood and already too watchful for comfort. He wore a striped shirt with one cuff damp from where he had chewed it before Lisa noticed.

Riley and Benjamin, nearly five, had been told to play quietly.

They were failing in stages.

"Why is the car upside down?" Benjamin asked.

Riley leaned toward the screen. "It is not upside down."

"It looks hurt."

"Cars don't get hurt."

"They can."

"They don't have feelings."

Benjamin looked unconvinced. "Toast has feelings."

"Toast is different."

Lisa closed her eyes for half a second.

On the screen, Reginald Denny was pulled from his truck.

Priscilla moved first. She crossed the room and turned the television off.

The sudden silence had weight.

Riley looked up sharply. "Why did you do that?"

Priscilla's face was composed in the way Lisa had known all her life, the Presley woman mask lowered so smoothly it could have been mistaken for calm by anyone who had not grown up watching it appear at funerals, hospitals, and doorways where bad men wanted interviews.

"Because that is not for you."

"But it is happening."

"Yes," Priscilla said. "And still not for you."

Julian stared at the dead screen.

He knew the city burned. He did not know smoke could enter a room through television.

Then his crayon snapped in his fist.

He looked down at it, offended.

Lisa crossed the room and crouched in front of him. "Hey."

Julian held up the broken crayon.

"Yeah," she whispered. "I know."

That was not about the crayon. He knew it. She knew he knew it in whatever strange way mothers knew things without evidence. She took the pieces from his hand before he could put one in his mouth and replaced them with a wooden block.

Wood was safer. Wood did not turn into red dust under pressure.

The phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

It rang again.

Katherine Jackson answered from the hallway, voice soft and controlled. "Hayvenhurst."

Lisa heard Michael's name before Katherine said it. A mother's body did that. It heard the shape of the danger before the word arrived.

Katherine appeared in the doorway. "It's Michael."

Lisa stood too quickly.

Julian followed the movement with his eyes. Riley grabbed Benjamin's sleeve. Priscilla glanced toward the curtains.

Lisa took the receiver in the hallway.

"Where are you?"

Michael's voice crossed lines and distance and tour machinery. "I'm safe. Are you?"

She shut her eyes.

Not hello. Not how are you. Are you safe. Marriage, stripped down to the bone.

"We're at Hayvenhurst. Your mother is here. My mom is here. Security's on the gate."

"The children?"

"Inside. They saw too much already."

A pause. Static. Somewhere behind him, someone said his name with professional urgency.

"I should be there," Michael said.

Lisa looked through the doorway at Julian on the carpet, at Riley whispering something to Benjamin, at Priscilla standing with her arms folded in front of the black television.

"No," she said.

"Lisa—"

"No. You getting on a plane into this does not make anybody safer."

Silence.

She hated saying it. Hated being right more.

"Talk to them," she said.

"Can I?"

The question nearly broke her. As if anyone could refuse him that. As if this family had not been built from people trying to reach one another through walls of noise.

She carried the phone back into the family room.

"It's Dad," she said to Julian, because some names needed placement before they crossed a room.

Michael's voice came through the receiver small and ruined by distance.

"Hi, Juju."

Julian looked at the phone.

A device. Plastic. Cord. Voice without body. His father compressed into static.

He reached for it with both hands.

Lisa held it near his ear.

"Dad," Julian said.

The word was not new, but it landed new every time. Michael stopped breathing on the other end. Lisa heard it.

"I'm here," Michael said.

Julian pressed his cheek against the receiver.

He did not know if Michael could feel it. Of course he couldn't. But bodies tried anyway. That was their great foolish gift.

Riley took the phone next. "Why is the city angry?"

Lisa flinched.

Michael did not answer immediately.

Then, softly, "Because people were hurt and nobody listened properly."

Riley absorbed this.

"Are we hurt?"

"No."

"Is Juno?"

"No."

"Good."

Benjamin took the phone. "A car got hurt."

Michael's voice changed, gentle around the edges. "I'm sorry you saw that."

"Grandma turned it off."

"Good. Grandma was right."

Priscilla lifted one eyebrow at Lisa. Lisa almost smiled and hated that she almost could.

The call ended because calls always ended before anyone was finished needing them.

Afterward, the family room did not resume itself. The crayons stayed where they were. The television stayed off. Outside the windows, Los Angeles remained bright and wrong.

Consuela arrived with sandwiches nobody wanted and juice boxes the children accepted as emergency diplomacy.

"Eat," she said. "Fear does not cook."

"That's beautiful," Danny said from the hallway, newly arrived and breathless.

"It is practical," Consuela corrected.

Danny came in and went first to Riley and Benjamin, because he was their father and because he had learned that in complicated rooms the most important thing was doing the simple thing in the right order. He touched Riley's hair, kissed Benjamin's forehead, then crouched beside Julian.

"Hey, Juno."

Julian offered him the wooden block.

Danny accepted it solemnly. "For me?"

Julian nodded once.

It was not a plan. It was not comfort exactly. It was what he had: a block instead of a broken crayon, a father on a phone, smoke through a screen, adults turning fear into sandwiches.

Danny sat on the carpet in his good jeans and held the block.

Outside, the city began to burn properly.

Inside, Priscilla drew the curtains before sunset.

South Los Angeles, California

April 29th, 1992 — 6:41 p.m.

Marisol Vega locked the pharmacy door with hands that would not stop shaking.

She had done it at six every day for eleven years. Turn the sign. Pull the gate. Key in the lower lock, upper lock, tug twice, because the second tug was for her mother who had never trusted locks installed by men who whistled while working. Today the ritual felt like a joke told by someone cruel.

Smoke stood at the end of the block.

Not drifted. Stood.

A man ran past carrying a television that looked too large for him. Two boys followed, laughing too loudly. Somewhere glass broke with the bright, ordinary sound glass always made, which was offensive. The world should not sound ordinary while ending.

Marisol had watched the verdict on the small television above the prescription counter with three customers and Mr. Kim from the market next door. Nobody had spoken for several seconds. Then everybody had spoken at once.

Now the street belonged to sirens that could not decide where to go.

She looked toward Mr. Kim's market. The metal grate was half down. His son, Daniel, nineteen and always wearing headphones, stood on a crate trying to pull it the rest of the way.

"Daniel!" she called.

He looked over.

"Go inside!"

"My dad says watch the front."

"Your dad is stubborn. Go inside!"

He gave a helpless shrug that looked exactly like nineteen: old enough to be frightened, young enough to obey fear badly.

A car rolled slowly down the street, windows down, men inside watching the storefronts.

Marisol's heart tried to climb out through her throat.

Daniel jumped down and disappeared behind the grate.

The car moved on.

Marisol stood with her keys in her hand and thought of her daughter at home with the television on. Eight years old. Old enough to ask why. Too young for the answer to do anything but damage.

A helicopter moved overhead.

The city looked back at itself from the sky and called it coverage.

Marisol went inside, locked the final bolt, and sat on the floor behind the counter until her knees stopped shaking enough for her to crawl to the phone.

Hayvenhurst, Encino, Los Angeles, California

April 30th, 1992 — 1:12 a.m.

Julian woke to the smell of smoke.

Not strong. Not enough to mean the house was burning. Just enough to enter sleep and turn it over. He opened his eyes in the dark of the guest room and did not know, for one panicked second, which life he was in.

Hackney stairwell. Weed smoke. Rain in Mayfair. White void.

Then the nightlight near the door showed the shape of Lisa in the chair.

She had fallen asleep sitting up with one leg tucked beneath her, still in jeans, one hand open on the armrest as though she had let go of something only because sleep had ambushed her. Riley lay on a mattress on the floor beside Benjamin, both of them dragged into unconsciousness by the sheer insult of being children during a crisis. Toast was under Benjamin's arm. Riley's hand rested near Julian's crib, not touching it, close enough to prove jurisdiction.

Julian stood carefully.

The crib rail came to his chest. His hands wrapped around it. Beyond the curtains, the night held a faint orange seam.

He knew this city. Not personally. Not from childhood walks or school routes or shops where the owner knew your name. He knew it from footage, anniversaries, documentaries, arguments, the way history turned people into symbols and then got bored before they were finished being human.

Now it smelled faintly through closed windows.

That was the new thing.

A sound came from his throat.

Not crying.

A hum.

Soft at first. One pitch. Then another. The interval landed true before he chose it. His body knew the vibration. Chest, mouth, skull, the tiny architecture of sound moving through a body too small to deserve what was inside it.

Lisa woke instantly.

Mothers did not wake gradually when their children made new sounds during disasters.

"Juju?"

He stopped.

She crossed the room and lifted him from the crib. "What is it?"

He put his face against her neck.

Smoke. Skin. Shampoo. Fear.

Lisa held him tighter.

"I know," she whispered.

He hummed again before he could stop himself.

This time the melody shaped itself into something almost complete. Not a song anyone knew. Not yet. Three notes and a return, small enough to fit in a dark room.

Lisa went still.

Julian felt it immediately and hated himself for noticing.

The danger was not that she would exploit it. She never would. The danger was that she would be afraid of it for him. Afraid of the house becoming a stage. Afraid of blood doing what blood did.

"Okay," she said after a moment.

Only that.

Okay.

She began to rock him, not in rhythm with the melody but against it, deliberately ordinary. A mother with a child, not a witness with a prodigy.

Across the room, Riley stirred. "Is Juno singing?"

Lisa's mouth brushed Julian's curls. "Juno is tired."

"He sounds nice."

"Go back to sleep, Riley."

"The city is still loud."

"I know."

"Make it stop."

Lisa closed her eyes.

There were things mothers could do. Curtains. Sandwiches. Arms. Televisions turned off before the worst image arrived. Phones held to small ears. There were also things they could not do, and the list was longer than anyone told you before the baby came.

"I can't," she whispered.

Riley was quiet.

Then Benjamin, apparently awake too, said into the dark, "Maybe Juno can hum it smaller."

Lisa laughed once, silently, her chest shaking beneath Julian's cheek.

Julian, traitor body that he had, hummed.

Smaller.

Three notes.

Enough to give the room a shape other than fear.

Not enough to save anything.

That mattered.

Hayvenhurst, Encino, Los Angeles, California

May 1st, 1992 — 9:33 a.m.

By Friday morning, everybody in the house looked older.

Not years. Hours. The kind of older that came from sleeping badly near a television. Katherine moved through rooms with a tray of tea and the soft authority of someone who had survived raising famous children before anyone in the room had learned how fame ate. Priscilla fielded calls with a notepad and a pen, writing names beside phrases like checked in, road closed, don't answer that one. Danny had slept on the sofa and pretended his neck was fine. Lisa had not slept so much as disappeared into chairs for brief intervals.

The children ate toast at the kitchen table.

Toast was also present, which created a naming issue Benjamin found hilarious and Riley considered beneath everyone.

Julian had a slice cut into thin fingers and kept dipping one into applesauce with the solemn concentration of a chemist handling unstable material.

The television was on in the other room again, but muted.

The images were worse without sound.

A reporter standing before a burned building. Men with brooms. A woman crying into a handkerchief. National Guard vehicles. Smoke lifting in daylight. The city looked stunned by its own reflection.

Lisa watched from the kitchen doorway.

Katherine came beside her.

"Eat something," Katherine said.

Lisa almost smiled. "Consuela already threatened me."

"Good. Then I am the second warning."

On the screen, a camera panned over a row of destroyed storefronts.

Lisa's face tightened.

"He'll ask about it again," she said, looking at Riley.

Katherine followed her gaze. "Then answer what she asks. Not everything you know."

"And Julian?"

Katherine looked toward him.

He was watching applesauce slide down his finger, completely absorbed and entirely not. Katherine had raised enough children to understand that the smallest ones sometimes took in the most because they had not yet learned which parts of the world adults considered separate.

"Hold him," she said.

Lisa nodded.

From the table, Riley said, "Can we go home?"

The room did not answer quickly enough.

Riley's chin lifted. She had Lisa's chin in moments like that. Priscilla's too. Generations of women who had learned that if the room hesitated, someone needed to stand inside the hesitation and make it pay rent.

"When it's safe," Lisa said.

"Is Neverland safer?"

"Today, yes."

"Then why aren't we there?"

Because roads could close. Because cameras could follow. Because Michael was gone and the city had become a map of risks. Because adults were often only guessing in more expensive shoes.

Lisa pulled out the chair beside her. "Because when things started, this was the right place."

"Is it still?"

Priscilla looked down at her notepad.

Danny's eyes moved to Lisa.

Katherine kept still.

Lisa sat in the chair and met her daughter's gaze with the respect Riley required and the protection she did not know she needed.

"For this morning, yes."

Riley nodded once. It was not acceptance. It was an extension granted.

Benjamin bit his toast. "I like Grandma Katherine's house."

"This is not Grandma Katherine's house," Riley said. "It's Hayvenhurst."

"Grandma Katherine is in it."

"That is not how houses work."

"Maybe."

Julian laughed.

The adults turned toward him, grateful before they could help it.

He hated that a little. Not them. The need. The way a child's laugh could become a piece of furniture in a room under siege.

But Lisa laughed too, properly this time, and that made it bearable.

Consuela set more toast on the table. "Eat. The city will still be there after breakfast."

It was not comfort.

It was true.

Outside, Los Angeles smouldered beneath television helicopters and morning sun.

Inside, Julian dipped toast into applesauce and made his siblings argue about whether houses belonged to people or people belonged to houses.

For a few minutes, nobody corrected them into history.

Los Angeles, California

May 1st, 1992 — 2:27 p.m.

In the local newsroom, the footage had begun to blur.

Not literally. The tapes were labelled, the times marked, the locations logged with frantic precision. Florence and Normandie. Koreatown. South Central. National Guard. Firefighters. Looting. Cleanup. Prayer vigil. A city divided into segments so it could be broadcast without making anyone responsible for the whole thing.

Patricia Haines sat at an editing bay with her headset around her neck and a paper cup of coffee gone cold beside her elbow. She had been awake for thirty-one hours, which made grief look technical. In point. Out point. Lower third. Cut to aerial. Cut away before the worst of the beating. Use the wide shot of smoke because the close shot of the woman outside the burned store made the anchor cry on the first take.

"We need twenty seconds for the six o'clock open," her producer said.

"Of what?"

He rubbed his face. "The city."

Patricia turned in her chair and looked at him.

He heard himself then. The city. As though Los Angeles were one thing, one wound, one image selected by tired people under fluorescent lights.

"Sorry," he said.

She turned back to the monitor. On the screen, a little boy stood beside a woman sweeping glass. He held the dustpan very seriously. Too seriously. Children always did that during disasters; they copied usefulness before they understood loss.

Patricia marked the shot and then unmarked it.

Not that one.

Some images should not have to become symbols just because television knew how to use them.

Hayvenhurst, Encino, Los Angeles, California

May 1st, 1992 — 8:04 p.m.

Michael called after dinner.

The house had settled into the strange exhaustion that followed emergency: dishes washed, children bathed, adults moving more quietly than usual because the day had already used up all the hard sounds. The television remained muted. The curtains stayed closed. Somewhere beyond the hills, helicopters still moved across Los Angeles with the persistence of insects.

Lisa took the phone in the hallway first.

"We're all right," she said before Michael could ask.

Julian stood near her knee, one hand gripping the leg of her jeans. He had started doing that during the day: attaching himself to fabric as if cloth could vote on whether people stayed. Riley and Benjamin sat on the bottom stair, pretending not to listen with such theatrical commitment that Danny had given up correcting them.

Lisa looked down at Julian and lowered the receiver.

"Dad," she said.

Michael's voice came through thin and far away. "Hi, Juju."

Julian pressed both hands to the phone this time.

"Dad," he said.

On the stairs, Riley's face softened and she looked away immediately, annoyed at herself for being caught by tenderness. Benjamin leaned against her shoulder.

"I heard you were singing," Michael said.

Lisa's eyes flicked toward Priscilla.

Julian went still.

Not fear. Recognition of the room sharpening around a word.

Michael must have heard the silence, because his voice changed at once. "Not singing. Sorry. Humming. Your mum said you hummed smaller for the room."

Julian breathed again.

Lisa crouched, phone between them. "He did."

Michael's next words came very softly. "Thank you."

Julian did not understand what to do with gratitude for something his body had betrayed into the dark. So he patted the receiver. Once. Twice.

Michael laughed on the other end, broken and grateful and too far away.

After the call, Lisa carried Julian upstairs.

"You don't have to sing for anybody," she said into his hair.

He rested his cheek against her shoulder.

He knew that was not true. Not forever. But tonight she could make it true for one flight of stairs, one hallway, one room where the curtains were drawn against a burning city.

Tonight, that was enough.
