The door clicked on the wall softly, Avery tightened her grip on the result she received from Dr Williams. She gulped down the lump in her throat.
She was pregnant.
She is going to be a mother.
Alex.
Her breath hitched.
She hasn't thought about Alex. What would his reaction be?
She slid into the seat in front of Dr Williams' office.
She hugged herself, everything was messy and now there's a baby. She gritted her teeth.
"Mummy's here for you, little one.."
Avery murmured under her breath.
A sharp voice cut through the hallway.
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
Avery's head snapped up.
She followed the sound.
A man stood frozen, his head lowered, worn clothes clinging to him. A plastic cup lay overturned at his feet, coffee spreading across the polished floor - staining the hem of the woman's dress.
Avery's gaze lifted.
And stilled.
Katherine Edison.
The woman's expression was twisted with disgust.
She bent slightly, picked up the empty cup and threw it back at him.
"Are you blind?" she snapped. " Do you walk without looking where you're going?"
" I - I'm sorry, ma'am," the man stammered.
" I just started working here, I - I have nothing -"
"Nothing?" Katherine scoffed, cutting him off.
"Then what exactly are you doing in a place like this?"
Her lips curled.
"Since when does Edison Hospital employ people like you?"
The man said nothing.
His silence only seemed to irritate her more.
"Pathetic," she muttered.
"That's enough."
The words came out colder than Avery expected.
She stepped forward.
She couldn't stand it. People always take advantage of those beneath them.
Katherine turned her head. She furrowed her brows.
" How much?" Avery asked.
Katherine eyed her and folded her arms.
"And who are you?"
Avery didn't answer.
"That's not the issue," she said calmly. "How much does he have to compensate?"
A pause.
"You know what, just take this and write what you need," Avery said pulling out a cheque from her purse.
Katherine's grip tightened around the cheque.
"And how am I sure you can pay for my dress?"
Avery stepped closer.
"Do you want to find out?" "You can write any amount and see if it works."
"You -"
Avery didn't wait for her to finish.
She turned away.
"What are you all looking at?" Katherine snapped "Go back to work."
