"Oslar" Lodge said. Suddenly coming into the Staff lodging, All of the Doctors got their own rooms while they were doing their residence at the Hospital. Dezzi, their ears twitching, Sat up quickly
"Yes Doctor?" They said, ready to bounce over the Bed.
"We need you in the East Wing. Got a weird one. Could use your eyes." Without another word, Lodge turned and walked out of their room. Dezzi snatched their scrubs off the table, and quickly pulled it on.
They didn't have to worry about the Hoof of The Dragon on their skin anymore. Because they had, with the help of Lodge, covered up the scar by expanding it into a different shape. The hooves had added talons, and the lower part expanded into a single shape.
It was a rising sun.
A design they'd made themselves-
To represent Leroy and their Crew.
Dezzi then swiped a nurses cap off the hat rack and tucked it onto their head. Ruffling their quickly growing locks.
"So, whats the situation?" They said, catching up to Lodge in a mere flash of movement. "Slow down in the Hospital. Don't need a sonic disruption." Lodge reprimanded.
"But a man, mid 40's, 6'3, came in complaining of pain in his abdomen. His skin inflamed and pricking with blood." His cane clacked against the ground as he continued to walk. Dezzi a foot beneath him.
"Have you run a Blood Sample?"
"No. We're still trying to Diagnosis something common to administer to ease his pain."
"Could it be Scurvy? Old wounds reopening, lack of Citrus and other vitamins? Leading to wearing of the Stomach Lining and Ulcers?" Dezzi was writing down notes in a small note pad, using a ballpoint pen with a cute flower on the top.
"You may rethink your theories when you see him." Lodge said. This caught Dezzi's attention as they both stopped at a large glass room with curtains drawn and the light ambient inside. Lodge turned on his heel, pulled two gloves from the box at the door and pulled the mask over his ears.
Dezzi following and doing the same.
Without another word. The two entered into the Room. Immediately the sound of Machines Beeping and dripping from an IV, the smell was acrid and sickly. Doctors around looking over the man, covered in protective layers as they lifted and observed. Taking swaps and putting them in dishes. Testing his eye coordination and dilation.
"Dialation?" Dezzi asked immediately.
"Almost none." A doctor said, tucking the light into their breast pocket.
"High fever then and affecting his eyes and nervous system."
Dezzi slowly stepped closer. The man wasn't just breaking out…He was horrific. Their skin was a crimson red, with what seemed to be…rocks or hardened skin picking up and bleeding like ichor volcanoes.
"What the…" Dezzi whispered.
"Told you." Lodge snarked.
"Almost looks like a form of…Fibrosis…" Dezzi prodded with a metal stick at one of the larger peaks. It was hard, cyst like, but upon another prod, it popped! A spray of blood going into the air!
"Woah! High blood pressure too…Way to high." They looked to the EKG. 140 BPM. Even resting. That was dangerously high.
"And his cheeks are flushed. High fever. But also." Lodge pointed at the patients eyes. "Pinpoint pupils."
"Which means theres a high level of Stimulants in his system…Tremors in his hands too…." Dezzi pointed. But suddenly. Their eyes widened. They roughly pulled the blanket covering the mans feet. And their suspicions were confirmed.
The mans legs were pale. Far too pale. Almost blue. As if-
"Theres no circulation to his extremities. That only happens with a high enough level of Dopamine or Adrenaline that the blood vessels narrow and can reach…But–" They lifted the mans heels…It was black and purple.
"Blood Pooling." Lodge confirmed.
"Means theat what evers in side this man is causing so much secretion from his endocrine glands that its narrowing the vessels at the furthest ends of his body. And then the Virus must be degrading the musculature to cause internal bleeding…But because of the high heart rate, it appears as a fever. But then because of the damage. The virus inflames the skin causing these peaks." Dezzi's eyes narrowed in deep concern.
"Meaning we need to get him on a Sedative. Force his heartrate down and prevent the tremors. If this keeps going then it could lead to heart failure!" They said spinning around and pointing at a nurse.
"Administer Propofol, and get an Alpha and Beta blocker drip going to reopen his Capillaries." They rushed around, eyes darting across the man.
"We need a hyper-aggressive Anti-Inflammatory as well." Lodge nodded. And got to work. Getting out the proper injections and slowly injecting it intravenously.
"We'll also need Anti-Biotics as well. Throwing what ever we can at the Pathogen to see what kills it. We've got petri dishes and cultures going to find the best one."
"Roger." Dezzi said, digging through their bag and pulling out a small tin of ointment that was thick and pink, it had a aroma of menthol and flower. A special salve made of the Cymbal tree sakura leaves. It'll help kick start the White Blood cells and injury recovery.
Later. Dezzi, still wide eyed, and breathing heavily, watched the man. The inflation had started to go down. Their heart rate lowering. The cysts were going down slowly…But their crimson hue stayed. Telling Dezzi that they were made out of dead red blood cells, hardened into peaks.
"Good…Medicine." Dezzi said. Clapping their hands together and holding them out in front of themselves. Hands igniting with a pale sakura pink and white hue. Thick streaks of the pink outlining the white.
"Haki. Using Conduit. I can…Project it outwards and utilize it to heal him…" This was an ability that was so incredibly rare among the branches. An extension of the Sew-Stich technique. Able to heal the wounds of another at the cost of their own Haki.
But Dezzi, being the Genius that they were, had already found a way to develop a Kata. A difficult task for many. But with their specific niche of Medical Care and Medicine in mind, they were able to focus their hard work and talent into this 'Good Medicine'
It was simple. A Conduit Kata that when it interacted with another person, it did as much as it could like any other doctor over hours could. Sealing wounds shut, acting as well as an Anti-Viral, Biotic, and Trauma Response.
The Perfect Ability for the a Doctor who sought to be the greatest of all time.
"Oslar." Lodge opened the glass, and stepped in. The glow that was slinking out like tendril fingers into different spots of the mans body retracted into the Minks hands.
"Yes?" They took the paper that was being extended out to them.
"W-What?" They narrowed. Reading the Blood report and culture notes. "12 Hours treating a man and waiting to see what exactly this thing is. Only to realize-"
"This is a brand new discovery. Never before seen, Congratulations." Lodge smiled. Popping a pain killer in his mouth.
"What? Why are you congratulating me. He's not my Patient."
"If that what you think? Dezzi you were and hour late to the initial diagnosis. And yet the moment I requested your input and help. You've been the only one in here consistently for the last 12 hours."
Dezzi looked back to the patient. Seeing that the reddening and cysts had reduced down to nothing more than what looked like a mild case of Pox. They'd been so focused on their Healing they hadn't even realized the progress.
"I…"
"Didn't realize?" Lodge answered for them. "Its a bad habit. But- the mark of a good doctor. A great one at that. Write up the report and your diagnosis and treatment, so we continue to administer it to the man." The Head doctor nodded to the Mink as he turned and left.
Patient Name: Jegnsen Hilly.
Height: 189 cm. 6'3.24 ft.
Weight: 350 lbs.
Patient was rushed into the ER with a strange rash and condition that was threatening themselves and people around them. The latter only realized once a handful of individuals who had come in contact with the patient then came into the ER as well.
Patient is considered Patient Zero with a new Pathogen which Virally spreads upon contact.
Treatment: High Dose of Alpha/Beta's and Anti-Inflammatory Biotic. Tincture of Cymbal Sakura Salve to be applied directly to the Sores, with consistent movement required by Nurses or help to keep blood from pooling. A Secondary Treatment of a Powerful Sedative, Opiote or non-opiote based is acceptable, to keep Patient induced and prevent Heartfailure.
Disease: Crimson Thorn (Hemaendocrincytosis)
Symptoms: Extreme Fever, Porous Bleeding, Dilated Eyes, Blood Pooling in Extremities, Heavy Breathing, Aching, Muscle Damage, Hardened Cysts on the skin, Loss of Sensations, Delirium, heightened secretion of Endocrine related chemicals, Swelling of the Throat, high mucosal production in the throat and lungs.
Description: Crimson Thorn causes extreme reddening of the skin, and formation of hardened cysts that leak blood, which are incredibly fragile as to spread the disease to other unprotected individuals. It is primarily causes by the inhalation of a bacteria found within rotting Sakura Cymbals, with a gestation of decades as it starts in a weakened form, and only becomes potent and pathological once it reaches maturity, where the body no longer has the temperature and immune system to take care of the disease itself. Once inhaled, it can take anywhere from mere hours to days of building symptoms to become obvious and spread to others. The Throat swells, causing coughing, as Crimson Thorn is Air and Blood Borne.
Treatment: Sedative to reduce heart strain and put patient at ease. High amounts of Antibodies and Inflammatory reducers. Sakura Ointment Salve a mixture of its Chemicals with Menthol and willow bark can be an effective home remedy.
- Signed Junior Resident, Oslar Kanin Dezzi,. M.D
"So hows it feel to be the one named for the Discovery and Treatment of a deadly disease?" Lodge asked. Many hours had passed sense the man had become stable and Dezzi had gotten their report and paperwork done. Currently he was holding the infant, Name Cuddy, that only survived her birth because of Dezzi's quick action.
"It…Feels great I guess…Still kinda weird and in a bit of a daze." They shook their hands at the side of their head to emphasize their point.
"Almost two years here. And the amount you've done already is staggering."
"One Year and seven months." Dezzi corrected. They were keeping vigorous track of how long it had been, and how long remained.
Lodge eyed Dezzi out of the corner of his eye, bottle still in his hand as he fed his daughter. "You know that only makes it more impressive right?"
"Heh- Yes. But I know more than anyone how long its been…And just how much more I have left." They scratched their cyan blue hair. Hands skittish at the compliment and affirmation.
"Go get some rest Dezzi. You've earned it. On your way to your Thesis quicker and quicker!" Lodge cooed and made face at Cuddy as he spoke.
"Are you sure there isn't anything else I can do? What about the other patients that came in also with Crimson Thorn?"
"Thanks to your treatment and Diagnosis of how it forms, the rest of the staff are handling it swiftly. I'd wager they'll be discharged in a few days once they are back to normative levels."
Dezzi, gripping at the hem of the too large Scrub that was almost like a tunic, or a dress, perhaps like a coat that came to half thigh. Sweat still drenched in it. They didn't need to worry about any contamination due to their Kata killing any bacteria on them, and that they had been covered in a proper smock before putting on the final gloves and masks when first seeing the patient.
They nodded vigorously "Okay!" Speaking just a tad too loud in their excitement and smile. Startling the babe slightly. To which Lodge delivered a irritated glare.
"Okay…" They whispered, hands Cupping their face.
The door to their Lodging creaked as they pressed the button on the wall. Everything in the hospital operated on a simple push in case hands couldn't be used. Simple pressure against a doors button to open it, or to a switch to turn the lights on.
They tossed their nurse cap to the side, they didn't need to wear it. But it was cute to them.
"Tough time?" A voice from the opposite bed asked. A tall thin man with faire colored hair that was almost like silk asked. They were reading a book.
Dezzi sighed. Not of annoyance but of relief as they feel back onto their bed. "Hello to you too Doyle." Brightlock Doyle was the mans name. Maybe late 20's. But they had an effeminate look to them, slim face that was sharp with a masculine quality compared to Dezzi's smaller rounder face.
Doyle was one of the Security Officers that the Hospital Employed. Their speciality was restraint and defensive techniques of fighting as opposed to primarily offensive capabilities. The Hospital needed it because there were plenty of illnesses that caused intense mania and delirium within patients that they needed to be restrained. And given that it wasn't uncommon for Mental Illnesses to be addressed in the Psych Ward wing of the Hospital, they were trained in Descelation.
It was because of Doyle specifically that Dezzi had learned about Haki, in the rudimentary sense. But it was unique in that what was taught was primarily about the subduing of opponents and its defensive uses.
Dezzi had learned the basic principles and eight affinities and abilities of Haki. But with that same spin. Leroy had used the Haki Technique of Tension to boost himself in battle. But the security force for the Hospital could use tension to bind their hands together as they held a Patient in place and wear themselves out and not hurt themselves or each other.
Flowing Haki into the ears could let them hear the heart rate of a patient to determine what best way to handle them.
Doyle even explained that a previous Security Member had access to the Branch of Conquerors. And had used it to actually sooth the minds of patients and lull them to a gentle slumber instead of a harsh unconsciousness.
Texture and Expansion to put an aura of hospitality and kindness worked as well. Easing anyone's mind that may be damaged or in distress before an operation.
"Maybe you'll be able to actually get a hang of a combative form of Haki some day." Dezzi snarked at Doyle.
"And maybe you could learn to be gentle." Doyle retorted.
"I'll stab you." Dezzi said. Pulling a scalpel from their pocket and pointing it at their roommate. "I'll have you know I'm very cozy. My captain loves when I cuddle!" Dezzi gave a cattish grin.
"Besides…I've worked hard to be as gentle and kind to my opponents as possible. But sometimes I have to fight…And fight hard." Their mind flashed back to Hard Rock. Where they were met with the conundrum of mercy killing zombies who were alive and aware of their new unlife. Or to the Citadel…
"We make an oath to do no harm. But sometimes you need to make something a bit worse to really help it better. Can't take out a tumor with out surgery. But you also can't call yourself a Doctor if you don't ease a persons mind who you are in the care of. We try to help everybody we can. Use the gifts that we learned…" They slowly took off their scrub. Exposing their lithe and thin physique. A curve to their waist and narrow shoulders. Over all they were very slender and lean, not toned or muscular. Just. Thin.
People forget that Rabbits aren't as large as their fur makes it seem.
They then pulled on a baggy shirt with the logo of the Hospital on the front. A Red Cross surrounded by a dark circle and the minimalist geometric shape of the Hospitals lay out from the front.
"I wouldn't know." Doyle said. Only for Dezzi to suddenly land on his stomach! The Doctor had leapt up and drove both feet into his stomach! "OUGH!" a strange noise came.
"Cmon! Quit layin around. We gotta get back to training! You still need to teach me about the Branches and stuff!" They landed on their feet soundlessly. Doyle curled in slight, if exaggerated, pain. He sat up and gave a thumbs up.
"Great! Now…Last time we left off you said something about me being a Exotic Type of Affinity? And a Conduit Specialty right?"
