...
And as the players disappeared inside London Colney, the preparation for that challenge had properly begun.
Then the morning of the Chelsea match arrive, as it carried a different kind of energy through London Colney.
There was no need for anyone to say what was waiting at the Emirates.
Chelsea had already lost twice to Arsenal that season. The first defeat had come at Stamford Bridge, and the second had been the 3–0 Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg result that had given Arsenal a commanding advantage in the tie.
That history mattered.
But it also created a danger.
Chelsea would not arrive simply accepting another defeat.
They would arrive determined to change the story.
By the time the Arsenal players began making their way toward the Emirates, that understanding was already sitting quietly in everyone's mind.
The team coach moved through London with its familiar escort, the players sitting in their usual places. Some talked across the aisle. Others wore headphones, looking out through the windows as the city passed by.
Francesco sat quietly for much of the journey.
His phone remained in his hand, although he barely looked at it.
Across from him, Gnabry was listening to music. Alexis had his headphones on as well, while Özil sat further forward, talking quietly with one of the staff members.
There was no nervousness.
Not exactly.
It was more like concentration had settled over the group.
When the coach finally reached the Emirates, the atmosphere changed immediately.
Even before the players stepped outside, they could hear supporters gathering around the stadium.
Arsenal shirts filled the approaches.
Scarves were raised.
Voices carried through the entrances as supporters arrived with the expectation of another important afternoon.
The players entered through the stadium access route and disappeared inside.
The familiar corridors of the Emirates were already busy with staff, security personnel, photographers and match officials moving between their respective areas.
Inside the Arsenal dressing room, the players began settling into their spaces.
The atmosphere was calm.
Nobody needed to be reminded that this was Chelsea.
They had prepared for it all week.
The players changed into their training gear before heading outside for the warm-up.
As they emerged onto the pitch, the Emirates was already beginning to fill.
The lower tiers were becoming crowded first.
Then the upper levels.
Every few minutes, another section filled with red and white.
The sound gradually became larger, until what had initially been scattered conversations and individual chants became a continuous stadium hum.
Francesco looked briefly toward the stands as he walked onto the grass.
He had played at the Emirates countless times.
It still felt different when the stadium filled for a major fixture.
The warm-up began with movement work.
The players jogged through dynamic stretches before separating into smaller groups.
Passing followed.
Short combinations.
Two-touch sequences.
One-touch exchanges.
The coaches watched the players closely, paying particular attention to the sharpness of their movements rather than asking them to expend unnecessary energy.
Francesco worked with Alexis and Gnabry for part of the session.
Özil drifted into their passing pattern.
The ball moved quickly between them.
Alexis played into Francesco.
Francesco returned it first time.
Özil received and immediately redirected it toward Gnabry.
Gnabry carried the ball a few steps before playing it back.
The rhythm was clean.
There was very little conversation.
The players knew the patterns.
Shooting practice followed.
The forwards took turns attacking crosses and cutbacks while the goalkeepers worked through their final preparations.
Čech made several saves, shouting instructions to the defenders in front of him even during the warm-up.
At the opposite end, Kepa was already working with Chelsea's goalkeeping staff.
Hazard walked through his own movement exercises before joining Willian and Pedro for a passing drill.
The Chelsea players looked focused.
There was no sign that they had travelled to the Emirates expecting to be overwhelmed.
That suited Arsenal.
They wanted a contest.
They simply intended to control it.
As the warm-up drew toward its conclusion, the players gathered for a few final short passing exercises before beginning their finishing movements.
Francesco took one final shot.
The ball struck the inside of the post and went in.
Alexis immediately pointed at him.
"Save those for the game."
Francesco smiled.
"I'll try."
The players then headed back inside.
The noise from the stands followed them through the tunnel.
Back in the dressing room, the atmosphere became more focused.
The players showered or completed their individual preparations before changing into the official Arsenal match kit.
Shirts were pulled on.
Socks adjusted.
Boots checked.
Tape tightened around ankles and wrists.
The small routines that had been repeated hundreds of times throughout the season took place almost automatically.
Francesco sat for a moment, looking down at the Arsenal shirt before fastening the final part of his kit.
The captain's armband was placed beside him.
He picked it up and secured it around his arm.
Around the room, the rest of the squad finished their preparations.
Wenger eventually entered.
The conversations faded.
The manager looked around the dressing room.
"The team remains unchanged."
There was no surprise.
The same established lineup that had started against West Ham would begin again.
Čech in goal.
Robertson, Van Dijk, Koscielny and Walker across the defence.
Kanté and Xhaka in midfield.
Özil ahead of them.
Alexis and Gnabry supporting Francesco.
And Francesco leading the side as captain and striker.
Wenger paused.
"You know each other."
His eyes moved around the room.
"That is an advantage. Use it."
Then his expression became slightly more serious.
"But do not confuse familiarity with certainty."
The players listened.
"Chelsea have lost twice to us. They will remember both matches. They will want to change what happened."
He folded his arms.
"We must be ready for their intensity."
There was no need to make the message longer.
"Play our football. Stay compact when we lose the ball. Move it quickly when the space is there. And be patient when it is not."
He looked toward Francesco.
"Lead."
Francesco nodded.
Wenger stepped aside.
"Let's go."
Outside, the final preparations were underway.
Chelsea emerged from their dressing room at almost the same time.
The two groups moved through the stadium corridors toward the tunnel.
The sound from the Emirates became louder with every step.
Players lined up.
Match officials gathered.
The referee checked both teams before leading them toward the pitch.
The stadium opened in front of them.
The noise rose immediately.
Arsenal and Chelsea walked out together.
The teams lined up beside the officials for the formalities.
The referee and his assistants greeted the players.
Hands were shaken.
Then the Arsenal players moved along the Chelsea line, exchanging handshakes with their opponents.
Francesco greeted César Azpilicueta.
The Chelsea captain returned the handshake with a brief nod.
There was nothing hostile about it.
Just the professional recognition between two captains who knew the match ahead would demand concentration.
The teams then gathered for the official photographs.
Arsenal's starting eleven arranged themselves in position.
Francesco stood at the centre of the front row, the captain's armband clearly visible.
The photographer took several shots.
Then the players dispersed.
Francesco and Azpilicueta walked toward the referee for the coin toss.
The referee held the coin between his fingers.
"Call it."
Francesco chose.
The coin went into the air.
It landed.
Arsenal had won.
Francesco pointed toward the right side.
The decision was made.
Arsenal would receive the kick-off.
The players took their positions.
The noise inside the Emirates rose again.
Francesco stood over the ball alongside Alexis.
The referee checked his watch.
A final glance toward both penalty areas.
Then the whistle.
The match began.
Arsenal immediately moved forward.
Francesco touched the opening pass backward, allowing Xhaka to receive and circulate the ball toward Robertson.
Chelsea did not sit deep.
Jorginho stepped forward to pressure Özil.
Kovačić moved across to support him.
Barkley remained ready to close the next passing lane.
The early exchanges were sharp.
Chelsea wanted to establish themselves through their midfield.
Jorginho constantly offered himself for the ball.
Kovačić carried possession through the first line of pressure.
Barkley looked for space between Kanté and Xhaka.
Arsenal answered with movement.
Özil dropped toward the ball.
Francesco moved away from the centre-backs before suddenly turning and attacking the space behind them.
Alexis drifted inside.
Gnabry stayed wider.
The defenders were forced to make decisions.
In the sixth minute, Arsenal worked the ball through the right side.
Walker found Özil.
Özil's first touch took him away from pressure.
He slipped the ball toward Francesco, who had dropped between the Chelsea midfield and defence.
Francesco turned.
Rüdiger stepped out.
Rather than forcing the duel, Francesco released the ball to Alexis.
Alexis drove toward the area before his shot was blocked by David Luiz.
The rebound fell loose.
Xhaka arrived.
His effort was deflected behind.
The Emirates reacted with a roar.
Chelsea survived.
But they had already seen the problem.
Arsenal could move through them.
Chelsea responded.
Hazard received near the left side and immediately drove at Walker.
The Arsenal full-back stayed with him.
Hazard cut inside.
Kanté appeared.
The Belgian shifted the ball again and tried to release Willian, but Robertson had already moved across to intercept.
Chelsea were dangerous.
Arsenal were simply beginning to find their rhythm.
The match settled into a demanding contest.
Chelsea's technical midfield made them difficult to press recklessly.
Whenever Arsenal jumped forward without coordination, Jorginho looked for the pass through the pressure.
Kovačić carried the ball several metres at a time, forcing Arsenal to retreat.
Pedro and Willian stayed high.
Hazard constantly moved between the flank and the inside channel.
But Arsenal's structure held.
Van Dijk and Koscielny communicated constantly.
Kanté covered the spaces behind the midfield press.
Xhaka kept the team connected.
And whenever Arsenal recovered the ball, the movement ahead of them became increasingly difficult for Chelsea to manage.
By the fifteenth minute, Arsenal had already created several meaningful opportunities.
A low cross from Robertson nearly reached Alexis at the near post.
Gnabry then found space on the right and forced Kepa into a save at his near corner.
Minutes later, Francesco attacked a loose ball inside the box and forced another intervention from the Chelsea goalkeeper.
The pressure was building.
Chelsea still had their moments.
Hazard produced one of his trademark changes of direction and created room for a shot, but Čech got down quickly and pushed it away.
Willian later tested the Arsenal goalkeeper from distance.
It was a good attempt.
Čech held it cleanly.
Two Chelsea efforts had required him to intervene.
Arsenal, meanwhile, were beginning to make Kepa work repeatedly.
The statistical difference was becoming a reflection of the match itself.
By the twenty-fifth minute, Arsenal had registered six shots on target.
Chelsea had managed two.
The Emirates could feel the difference.
Arsenal were not simply shooting from everywhere.
They were reaching dangerous areas.
Their passing was pulling Chelsea apart.
Özil kept finding small pockets between the midfield and defensive lines.
Alexis moved unpredictably.
Gnabry stretched the pitch.
Francesco constantly shifted across the centre-backs, never allowing them to settle.
Kanté and Xhaka ensured that Chelsea could not simply counter whenever an attack broke down.
Chelsea's players were working hard.
But Arsenal were beginning to make them work harder.
Then came the breakthrough.
The clock reached the thirty-first minute.
Chelsea attempted to move forward through Jorginho.
Kanté read the pass and stepped in.
The ball reached Xhaka.
One touch.
Then Özil.
The German immediately looked forward.
Francesco had started centrally but moved diagonally toward the inside-right channel.
David Luiz followed him for a moment.
Rüdiger hesitated.
That small hesitation was enough.
Özil saw it.
He waited until Francesco crossed into the gap before sliding the pass between the two defenders.
It was not a hopeful ball.
It was precise.
Flat.
Weighted perfectly into Francesco's path.
Francesco reached it just inside the area.
Kepa rushed forward.
Francesco's first touch took the ball slightly away from the goalkeeper.
Kepa tried to make himself bigger.
Francesco remained calm.
He opened his body and lifted the finish over the goalkeeper, sending the ball into the far side of the net.
For a fraction of a second, there was silence.
Then the Emirates exploded.
"GOAL!"
Francesco turned toward the supporters.
Özil was already running toward him.
Alexis arrived from the opposite side.
Gnabry came in behind them.
Francesco laughed as his teammates surrounded him.
Özil grabbed him by the shoulders.
"That was the run."
Francesco nodded.
"That was the pass."
Özil smiled.
The players briefly formed around their captain before separating.
Francesco looked toward the stands.
Arsenal 1–0 Chelsea.
Kepa retrieved the ball from the net.
Chelsea's defenders gathered around one another.
Azpilicueta was already speaking to them.
The match had changed.
Chelsea now had to chase.
And Arsenal had even more space to exploit.
Chelsea responded with greater urgency.
Hazard began drifting deeper to collect the ball.
Willian moved higher.
Pedro attacked Robertson more directly.
Jorginho demanded possession.
For several minutes Chelsea forced Arsenal to defend.
Čech saved from Pedro after a quick exchange around the edge of the area.
Van Dijk then stepped across Hazard to prevent a dangerous pass into the six-yard box.
Arsenal survived the spell.
Then they began taking control again.
Francesco remained a constant threat.
Every time Chelsea pushed their full-backs forward, he looked for the space behind them.
At the forty-second minute, that space finally opened.
The move started with Alexis.
He received near the left touchline and immediately drove inward.
Azpilicueta moved across.
Alexis did not slow.
He exchanged a short pass with Xhaka before accelerating again.
Francesco had drifted toward the far side of the penalty area.
Rüdiger followed him.
David Luiz looked toward Alexis.
For one moment, Chelsea's defence had to choose.
Alexis lifted his head.
He saw Francesco's movement.
The pass came low and fast across the area.
Francesco attacked it from behind the defender.
His first touch was controlled with his right foot.
He did not need another.
As Kepa moved across the goal, Francesco struck through the ball with his left.
The shot travelled hard across the goalkeeper and into the far corner.
2–0.
The Emirates erupted again.
Francesco immediately turned toward Alexis.
The Chilean was already sprinting toward him.
They collided in celebration.
Gnabry and Özil joined them.
Then the midfielders arrived.
Francesco pointed toward Alexis.
"That was yours."
Alexis laughed.
"You just had to finish."
"Fair."
The Arsenal supporters continued singing as the players returned toward halfway.
Chelsea's players stood around their own penalty area.
Azpilicueta clapped his hands, urging his teammates forward.
Two goals down.
Only a few minutes remaining before halftime.
Chelsea had work to do.
Arsenal, meanwhile, had earned exactly the position Wenger had wanted.
But the manager remained on the touchline without excessive celebration.
He knew there was still another forty-five minutes.
The final minutes of the half were played at a slightly more controlled pace.
Chelsea attempted to create one opening before the interval.
Hazard received possession and tried to turn.
Kanté tracked him.
Willian crossed.
Van Dijk headed clear.
Pedro collected the second ball and sent another delivery into the area.
Koscielny cleared it.
Arsenal then worked the ball away from danger.
Francesco continued moving up front, occasionally dropping toward midfield to give his teammates an outlet.
When the referee finally raised his whistle, Arsenal were still two goals ahead.
The first half was over.
Arsenal 2–0 Chelsea.
Francesco had two.
Özil had supplied the first.
Alexis had created the second.
The players walked back toward the tunnel.
The noise from the Emirates followed them.
Inside the dressing room, the players immediately began recovering.
Boots came off.
Water bottles were opened.
Towels were thrown over shoulders.
Several players sat down heavily.
Alexis remained standing for a moment, still catching his breath.
Gnabry took a long drink.
Francesco sat at his locker, breathing steadily.
Two goals.
But he knew better than anyone that the match was not finished.
Wenger entered after speaking briefly with his staff.
He allowed the players a few moments before addressing them.
"Good half."
The room quietened.
"You have controlled large parts of the game. The movement has been good. The pressing has been good."
He looked around.
"But Chelsea will respond."
Nobody disagreed.
"They have quality. They will come out with more urgency."
Wenger pointed toward the players.
"So we do not become relaxed because we are two goals ahead."
He paused.
"We continue to defend properly. We continue to communicate. And when we have the ball, we remain disciplined."
He then looked toward the attacking players.
"If we have the opportunity to finish the match, we take it."
Another pause.
"I want one more goal."
A few players nodded.
Wenger's eyes settled briefly on Francesco.
The striker had heard the instruction.
Before Wenger could continue, Francesco leaned back slightly.
"Well…"
Several players looked toward him.
Francesco smiled.
"If you keep giving me the ball, I wouldn't mind getting one more."
Alexis immediately laughed.
Gnabry shook his head.
"Of course."
Özil smiled from his seat.
"Two is apparently not enough."
Francesco looked at him.
"Never."
That earned a few laughs around the room.
Even Wenger allowed himself a small smile.
"Your hat-trick can wait if the team needs something else."
Francesco nodded.
"Obviously."
Wenger pointed toward him.
"Good."
Then he looked around the entire room.
"The priority is the match."
The humour faded naturally.
The players understood.
They had two goals.
Chelsea had another half to play.
And Arsenal still had work to do.
Francesco took another drink of water and looked around at his teammates.
There was confidence in the room.
There was laughter.
But beneath it sat concentration.
Two goals had put Arsenal in control.
They had not put the match beyond Chelsea.
Then the second half began with Chelsea playing as though the two-goal deficit had become an accusation.
The first Arsenal pass went backward, but Chelsea immediately stepped forward.
Jorginho pressed Xhaka.
Kovačić moved toward Kanté.
Barkley pushed higher.
Hazard and Willian advanced almost level with Pedro, leaving Arsenal's back four with very little room to breathe.
The message from Sarri was obvious.
Chelsea were not going to wait.
They wanted a goal quickly.
Arsenal were forced deeper almost immediately.
Hazard received on the left and carried the ball inside, drawing Walker toward him before releasing it toward Jorginho. The Italian midfielder switched play first time.
Willian took the pass.
Robertson closed him down.
Willian shifted onto his right foot and delivered toward the penalty area.
Van Dijk rose above Pedro and headed away.
The clearance only reached Barkley.
He returned the ball toward the edge of the area.
Kovačić collected it and tried to drive between Xhaka and Kanté.
Kanté tracked him all the way.
The challenge came just before Kovačić could release Hazard.
The ball went loose.
Kanté immediately tried to start a counter.
He found Özil.
Özil looked forward, but Chelsea had already recovered.
Francesco was surrounded by David Luiz and Rüdiger.
Alexis was being followed by Azpilicueta.
Gnabry was too far away to receive safely.
Özil kept possession instead.
It was not spectacular.
It was necessary.
Chelsea had begun the half with enough intensity to make every careless pass dangerous.
For several minutes, Arsenal could barely establish themselves beyond midfield.
The Emirates had changed as well.
The confidence that had filled the stadium at halftime had become more nervous.
Every Chelsea attack drew a reaction.
Every Arsenal clearance earned applause.
When Hazard received between Walker and Koscielny, the noise rose immediately.
The Belgian turned.
Koscielny stepped out.
Hazard shifted the ball around him.
Walker recovered from behind and managed to get a foot to the attempted pass.
The ball rolled toward Čech.
The goalkeeper gathered it calmly.
"Stay with it!" Van Dijk shouted.
Arsenal reorganized.
But Chelsea came again.
Jorginho was finding the ball more often.
Kovačić carried it through midfield.
Barkley began arriving around the edge of the penalty area.
Pedro moved into the right channel, pulling Robertson narrower and creating space for Azpilicueta.
The Chelsea full-back exploited it.
His cross flashed through the six-yard box.
Nobody touched it.
For Arsenal, that was the warning.
The danger was no longer theoretical.
They were being stretched.
Francesco remained high, waiting for the moment Arsenal could escape.
When Xhaka finally won possession and found him, Francesco had two defenders immediately closing.
He controlled the ball with his back to goal.
Rüdiger leaned into him.
Francesco managed to hold him off long enough to release the ball toward Alexis.
Alexis carried it forward.
For the first time in several minutes, Arsenal had numbers ahead of the ball.
Gnabry sprinted down the right.
Özil moved centrally.
Francesco turned and attacked the box.
Alexis tried to find him.
David Luiz intercepted.
Chelsea were back on the attack before Arsenal could even establish their shape.
The pressure continued.
Five minutes.
Then six.
Then seven.
Chelsea were not creating chance after chance, but they were keeping Arsenal uncomfortable.
That mattered.
A team could become vulnerable without conceding a clear opportunity if it spent too long defending in its own half.
Wenger stood near the touchline, gesturing constantly.
"Closer!"
"Together!"
"Don't follow the ball!"
Kanté and Xhaka adjusted their positions.
Van Dijk pushed the line slightly higher.
Koscielny did the same.
Robertson and Walker narrowed.
Arsenal needed to make the pitch smaller again.
Chelsea resisted.
Hazard received another pass and cut inside.
This time Kanté arrived quickly enough to force him backward.
Hazard returned it to Jorginho.
Jorginho played wide.
Pedro crossed early.
Koscielny headed clear.
The second ball fell to Barkley.
His shot struck Xhaka and deflected away.
The Emirates applauded the block.
Arsenal finally had a chance to breathe.
But only briefly.
By the fifty-fifth minute, Chelsea had almost completely dictated the opening phase of the half.
Francesco had barely seen the ball.
Yet he continued moving.
He pulled toward the left.
Then back into the centre.
Then toward the space between David Luiz and Rüdiger.
He knew that eventually Arsenal would recover possession in a useful area.
The question was whether Chelsea would score before that happened.
The answer came in the fifty-ninth minute.
Chelsea built from deep.
Jorginho received from David Luiz and immediately moved the ball into Kovačić.
The Croatian midfielder carried it forward.
Kanté followed.
Kovačić released Pedro on the right.
Robertson moved across.
Pedro returned inside rather than crossing.
Jorginho was there.
One touch.
Then Barkley.
Barkley drew Xhaka toward him before slipping the ball into Hazard's path.
The Belgian had started on the left.
Now he was arriving centrally.
Van Dijk stepped toward him.
Hazard took one touch across his body.
Koscielny tried to close the angle.
Hazard waited.
Then, from just inside the area, he struck low through the narrow gap between the defenders.
Čech dropped.
He got a hand to it.
But the shot had enough pace to continue beyond him and nestle inside the far corner.
1–2.
For the first time all afternoon, the Emirates fell noticeably quiet.
Chelsea celebrated together.
Hazard was immediately surrounded by Willian, Pedro and Barkley.
Azpilicueta ran from the back.
The Chelsea supporters behind the goal were suddenly making themselves heard.
They believed again.
Arsenal players looked toward one another.
There was no panic.
Francesco walked toward halfway.
"Come on," he said quietly.
Alexis nodded.
Kanté clapped his hands.
Xhaka pointed toward the centre circle.
The message was simple.
Restart.
Arsenal had been under pressure.
They had conceded.
Now they had to respond.
And gradually, they did.
The first thing that changed was their possession.
Instead of trying to force the ball forward immediately, Arsenal began circulating it with greater patience.
Kanté became more available.
Xhaka dropped slightly deeper.
Özil started finding the pockets that had been unavailable during Chelsea's opening surge.
Alexis moved closer to the ball.
Gnabry remained wide enough to stretch Alonso.
Francesco occupied both centre-backs.
The difference was subtle at first.
Then it became obvious.
Chelsea were running.
Arsenal were making them run.
Robertson received and found Xhaka.
Xhaka moved it to Kanté.
Kanté returned it to Özil.
Özil turned.
Francesco dropped toward him.
The German played the ball into his feet.
Francesco held it, waited for Gnabry to move beyond him and then released the winger.
Gnabry accelerated.
Alonso followed.
The cross was blocked.
Corner.
The Emirates came alive again.
Arsenal were back in Chelsea's half.
The next attack came through Alexis.
Then another through Walker.
Then Özil found space between Jorginho and Kovačić and nearly released Francesco behind the defensive line.
Chelsea's ten-minute blitz had changed the rhythm.
It had not changed Arsenal's belief.
Wenger could see it.
He remained composed on the touchline, but the movement of his team had returned to something much closer to the first half.
Then, in the sixty-eighth minute, Arsenal found the response they wanted.
The move began deep.
Van Dijk carried the ball forward before finding Xhaka.
Xhaka passed into Özil.
Özil took a touch and played toward Gnabry on the right.
Gnabry had space.
He drove forward.
Alonso moved toward him.
Gnabry slowed just enough to make the defender hesitate.
Francesco was initially central, closely watched by Rüdiger.
Then he changed direction.
Instead of running toward goal, he moved diagonally away from the centre-back.
Rüdiger followed.
Gnabry recognized the movement.
He carried the ball another few yards before sliding a pass into the space Francesco had created for himself.
Francesco arrived on the move.
David Luiz attempted to close him down.
Francesco's first touch took the ball across his body.
Kepa stepped off his line.
Francesco did not rush.
He waited until the goalkeeper committed to one side.
Then he guided the finish low beyond him and into the opposite corner.
2–1.
No.
The scoreboard changed again.
3–1.
Francesco had his hat-trick.
The Emirates erupted.
But Francesco did not immediately race toward the corner.
He turned toward the Chelsea supporters behind the goal and simply stood there for a moment.
His expression remained almost completely calm.
No exaggerated gesture.
No wild sprint.
He raised one hand briefly, then turned away.
Behind him, Arsenal's players were anything but calm.
Gnabry reached him first.
Alexis followed.
Özil was laughing as he approached.
Kanté came running from midfield.
The contrast was almost amusing.
Francesco looked composed.
Everyone around him was celebrating.
Gnabry grabbed his shoulder.
"Three."
Francesco smiled.
"Good pass."
Gnabry shook his head.
"You make it look easy."
The captain turned toward the halfway line.
"Let's finish it."
Wenger applauded from the touchline.
He knew what had happened.
Chelsea had pushed Arsenal hard.
Arsenal had absorbed it.
Then they had answered.
The match had changed again.
Chelsea needed another response.
Instead, Wenger made his own changes.
The clock reached seventy-two minutes.
The fourth official raised the board.
Three Arsenal substitutions.
Francesco's number appeared.
Alexis's followed.
Then Özil's.
Francesco looked toward Wenger.
The manager nodded.
The captain understood.
His work was finished.
He walked toward the touchline to a huge reception from the Arsenal supporters.
Wenger met him near the technical area and briefly placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Excellent."
Francesco nodded.
"Thank you."
Alexis followed him off.
Özil came behind them.
Olivier Giroud entered for Francesco.
Bukayo Saka replaced Alexis.
Denis Suárez came on for Özil.
The three new players quickly moved into position.
Giroud took the central role.
Saka moved into the attacking area.
Denis settled into the creative space.
Chelsea made their own triple change.
Willian was replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Pedro made way for Gonzalo Higuaín.
Mateo Kovačić was replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The substitutions brought another change in character.
Chelsea now had fresh attacking legs.
Arsenal had Giroud's physical presence, Saka's acceleration and Denis's technical control.
The match settled into a tense period.
There was no frantic exchange of chances.
Arsenal had no reason to chase recklessly.
Chelsea had every reason to attack, but their urgency sometimes worked against them.
Denis became important.
He kept showing for the ball.
A pass came into his feet.
He turned away from Loftus-Cheek and found Saka.
Saka carried forward before releasing Giroud.
The striker held off David Luiz and waited for support.
Denis arrived.
Giroud returned the ball.
The move ended with Saka's cross being cleared.
A few minutes later, Denis switched play toward Robertson.
Arsenal were managing the game.
Chelsea continued searching.
Hazard remained dangerous, but Kanté and Xhaka were protecting the spaces around him.
Higuaín tried to find room between the centre-backs.
Van Dijk refused to give him an easy touch.
Hudson-Odoi attacked Walker.
The full-back stayed with him and forced him backward.
The minutes passed.
Chelsea needed something.
Arsenal were increasingly comfortable.
Then came the eighty-fifth minute.
Saka received the ball near the right side.
There was space ahead of him.
He carried it forward rather than crossing immediately.
Alonso moved across.
Saka shifted the ball onto his left foot and paused.
Giroud began moving toward the near side of the penalty area.
Denis made a supporting run inside.
Saka waited until the defender's weight shifted toward him.
Then he delivered a low ball behind the first line of defenders.
Giroud had timed his movement perfectly.
He stepped across David Luiz.
The cross arrived at waist height.
Giroud adjusted his body and redirected it first time, sending the ball beyond Kepa and into the far side of the goal.
4–1.
The Emirates celebrated again.
Saka turned toward Giroud.
The Frenchman was already pointing back at him.
"That's yours."
Saka laughed.
"Just finish it."
The substitutes on the Arsenal bench were on their feet.
Denis ran toward them.
Wenger applauded.
The goal said something important about Arsenal beyond the scoreline.
The captain had scored three.
But once he left the pitch, the team had continued functioning.
Saka had created.
Giroud had finished.
The squad had taken over.
Chelsea's players stood around their penalty area.
Four goals conceded.
The response they had wanted after two previous defeats was slipping away from them again.
The final minutes became about control.
Arsenal did not chase another goal.
There was no need.
Denis helped retain possession.
Saka continued offering an outlet.
Giroud held the ball when necessary.
Kanté covered behind them.
Xhaka slowed the tempo.
The defenders remained disciplined.
Chelsea pushed numbers forward, but their attacks became increasingly predictable.
One cross was headed away by Van Dijk.
Another was collected by Čech.
Hudson-Odoi tried to accelerate beyond Robertson, but the Arsenal full-back forced him toward the corner.
The Emirates was no longer tense.
The supporters had begun celebrating.
Songs rolled around the stadium.
Arsenal's players kept their concentration.
There was still football to finish.
Wenger stood near the technical area, watching the final minutes without needing to say much.
The result was secure.
When the referee finally looked at his watch and brought the whistle to his lips, the sound was almost swallowed by the roar around the Emirates.
Full time.
Arsenal 4–1 Chelsea.
Francesco's hat-trick had been the centrepiece.
Giroud had added the fourth.
Chelsea had threatened to change the match after halftime.
For ten minutes, they had.
Hazard's goal had given them genuine hope.
But Arsenal had recovered, restored their structure and answered with two more goals.
Francesco had completed his hat-trick before being taken off.
The substitutes had finished the job.

The players gathered near the centre of the pitch as the supporters celebrated around them.
Arsenal had not simply won another match against Chelsea.
They had survived their strongest spell, regained control and finished the afternoon with authority.
