Chapter 3 - Descending (3)

Jin Kai's consciousness returned slowly, like mist lifting from a mountain lake.

His eyes fluttered open, still blurry at first, the world nothing more than soft smears of light and shadow. Gradually, the haze cleared. He was no longer lying on coarse sand beneath the burning sun. Instead, he found himself on a simple wooden bed. The mattress was thin and rough stuffed with dried grass or straw, yet it felt like the softest cloud compared to the unforgiving beach.

A dull ache still lingered throughout his body, but it was noticeably weaker than before. His God Kin physique was already working to repair the damage at an astonishing rate. Even so, moving remained difficult. Every muscle protested as he tested his limbs.

With great effort, he raised his arms toward his face. Thick layers of clean white bandages wrapped around both forearms and hands. He shifted slightly under the thin blanket and realized his torso and legs were also heavily bandaged. The scent of herbal medicine, bitter yet strangely refreshing clung to the air and to his skin.

Jin Kai let out a slow breath and pushed himself upright, wincing as he swung his legs over the edge of the bed. The room around him was modest, even shabby by the standards of his former life in Earth. Cracked wooden walls, a single small window letting in slanted beams of afternoon sunlight, a worn table, and two simple chairs. A faint smell of sea salt and dried herbs filled the space. Yet after nearly dying on that beach, he felt nothing but quiet gratitude.

The sound of the door creaking open opposite him drew his attention.

A beautiful, slender young woman stepped inside, carrying a small wooden bucket of fresh water. Her dress, though made of plain, coarse fabric, draped elegantly over her graceful figure. The simple garment did nothing to hide her refined bearing, she moved with a quiet poise that made the humble room feel a little brighter. Long black hair cascaded down her back, tied loosely with a ribbon, and her delicate features carried both gentleness and quiet strength.

For a brief moment, Jin Kai's heart skipped a beat.

Is this the human side of me surfacing? he wondered, a faint trace of amusement mixing with his surprise. After centuries in the emotionless God Realm, even a simple flutter of attraction felt strangely novel.

Their eyes met.

"You're awake!" the Elder Sister exclaimed, her voice warm with relief. She hurried across the small room and set the bucket down beside the bed before pulling up a chair to sit close to him.

"How are you feeling?" she asked softly, her tone gentle yet laced with genuine concern.

Without waiting for an answer, she reached out and placed two cool fingers against the inside of his wrist, carefully checking his pulse. The sudden closeness caught Jin Kai slightly off guard, but he remained motionless, letting her examine him. In his current weakened state, there was little else he could do anyway.

Her touch was light and professional, yet he could sense the subtle flow of her own spiritual energy as she assessed his condition. She was clearly no ordinary village girl, there was a trace of cultivation in her, modest but present.

Jin Kai studied her face in silence. Up close, she looked even younger than he had first thought — perhaps in her early twenties, yet her eyes held a maturity that suggested she had already shouldered responsibilities far beyond her age.

After a few moments, she withdrew her hand, her brows relaxing slightly.

"Your pulse is steady, though still weak," she said. "The medicine seems to be working. You were in very bad shape when we brought you back. The children were worried you might not wake up at all."

She paused, tilting her head slightly as she regarded him with open curiosity.

"My name is Ruo Lan. May I ask… who are you? And how did you end up washed up on our beach like that?"

Jin Kai opened his mouth to answer, but the words caught in his throat.

He had always referred to himself as Jin Kai, even since the day he was "born" into the God Realm. It was the only name that truly belonged to him, carried over from his life on Earth. Yet the question still made him stumble. In the God Realm, names had been almost meaningless. Everyone simply addressed one another as "Brother" or "Elder," with no need for personal identity beyond one's strength and spiritual force. The idea of introducing himself properly felt strangely foreign now.

The silence stretched.

Ruo Lan waited patiently at first, her clear eyes fixed on him with gentle curiosity. But as the quiet continued, a flicker of concern crossed her face.

"Hello? Are you there?" she asked, waving her hand lightly in front of his face.

The motion snapped him out of his thoughts. Jin Kai blinked, intending to speak at last but before he could form even a single word, Ruo Lan leaned forward and gently placed her hands on his shoulders.

"Seems like you're still not okay," she said softly, her voice laced with quiet worry. "Just lie down."

With careful but firm guidance, she eased him back onto the bed. Jin Kai's body, still weak and heavy, offered little resistance. Despite the lingering pride of a God Kin that urged him to sit up and assert himself, he found himself complying without protest. The rough mattress welcomed him once more as Ruo Lan adjusted the thin blanket over his bandaged chest.

She straightened up, giving him a small, reassuring smile.

"Rest well for now. There's no rush. You can tell me your name when you're feeling stronger."

Ruo Lan picked up the wooden bucket again and turned toward the door. Just before stepping out, she glanced back at him one last time.

"I'll bring some soup later. The children have been asking about the 'mysterious man on the beach.' Try to sleep, your body needs it."

The door clicked softly shut behind her, leaving Jin Kai alone in the modest room.

He stared at the wooden ceiling beams, the faint scent of herbs and sea salt still lingering in the air. Outside, the distant crash of waves mixed with the playful laughter of the five children somewhere nearby.

Jin Kai… he thought to himself, a faint, wry smile tugging at his lips despite the exhaustion pulling at him. It seems I'll be using that name again after all.

His eyelids grew heavy. The healing power of his God Kin body continued its quiet work beneath the bandages, but even that couldn't fight off the deep fatigue from the fall and the descent. With Ruo Lan's gentle presence still fresh in his mind, Jin Kai slowly drifted back into a healing sleep.
