My World Is... (5)
GRAAAAAAAH!
A horde of monsters, howling like beasts, chased after the fleeing dwarf children.
They harbored an intense hatred toward life itself. Instinctively drawn to the scent of life, they surged toward the distant fugitives.
DUDUDUDUDU!
Into the midst of the monstrous swarm, a massive blue wolf charged forward.
Some of the monsters turned their attention to Kyle and Dark, but there were simply too many of them. Only a fraction veered off to attack the pair.
The rest continued to pursue the escaping dwarves.
KWAANG!
Kyle swung his sword with all his might, unleashing mana. A shockwave burst from the blade, obliterating dozens of monsters in an instant.
For Kyle, who had reached the highest level, killing a few feeble undead was no challenge.
The real problem was their overwhelming numbers. On top of that, high-ranking priests and dark mages from the Salvation Church were observing from the rear, and no one knew when they might join the fray.
"Damn it… Come at me, all of you."
Grinding his teeth, Kyle lowered his body from Dark's back.
WHOOSH!
Twisted claws and bones narrowly grazed over his head.
Kyle immediately swung his sword, and a blue shockwave blasted away the surrounding monsters.
KWAANG!
The monsters were hurled backward, crashing into their own ranks. But Kyle didn't continue attacking—he yanked the reins instead.
"Dark! To the right!"
"Got it!"
Dark tilted his body acrobatically, weaving through the gaps between the monsters.
The advancing monsters' eyes locked onto Kyle. Swinging his sword toward them, Kyle shouted,
"Yeah! Look at me! I'm right here, you bastards!"
GRAAAAH!
Kyle, riding atop Dark, twisted and turned as they ran. Each of his movements triggered a chain reaction from the monsters.
"Look at me!"
KWAANG!
Kyle unleashed another blast of mana, sending another group of monsters flying.
The power he exploded forth was like the fiercest flame of life in the area.
The monsters began to focus their pursuit on Kyle.
GRAAAAH!
The dead eyes of the undead turned toward him. Their claws fell toward him—
SLASH!
Kyle leapt from Dark's back and swung his sword.
KWAANG!
With a powerful shockwave, nearby undead exploded into pieces.
At the same time, Dark swung his massive claws, ripping apart undead on the opposite side.
"Again!"
As Kyle leapt back onto Dark's back, Dark dashed through an opening in the horde.
Even as they ran, Kyle didn't stop swinging his sword or releasing mana.
BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM!
Explosions erupted, collapsing nearby monsters.
Exploding mana like this consumed a tremendous amount of energy. But with this many enemies, there was no choice.
DUDUDUDUDU!
Dark, shaped like a blue wolf, raced through the battlefield without pause.
Atop him, Kyle gasped for breath, yet his sharp gaze never wavered.
'Not yet, not enough.'
Plenty of monsters were chasing him now, but it still wasn't enough. Too many were still pursuing the dwarf children.
At least there was one bit of good news: there were barely any flying monsters.
That was thanks to the dwarves' chaos, which had forced most of the enemy's spells to be used on the flying monsters.
The few flying ones that remained were instinctively chasing only Kyle. Even if a few slipped by, the mercenaries guarding the children should be able to stop them.
Those mercenaries had all reached knight level, thanks to Ghislain's hellish training.
DUDUDUDUDU!
As Dark dashed forward, he shouted,
"Up left! One with wings coming in!"
"Got it!"
Rather than dodge, Dark leapt high into the air.
A flying monster swooped down, claws poised to strike—but Kyle's sword was faster.
KWAANG!
Several of the flying monsters that had latched onto them were sliced in half and plummeted to the ground.
THUD!
Dark landed hard, crushing several monsters rising from below.
The more strength Dark used, the more the energy making up his body was depleted.
Fortunately, this time, Ghislain had generously injected mana, so he could still hold on.
Kyle glanced at Dark with a hint of admiration.
"Wow, you're seriously good at fighting. I didn't expect this."
"I've followed my master through hundreds of battlefields. If I put my mind to it, I could kill a superhuman with ease."
Kyle laughed out loud at Dark's bravado.
Still, it was true that fighting side by side like this made him feel more secure.
GRAAAAAH!
Once again, monsters surged toward Kyle and Dark.
Dark spun around, whipping his tail. A monster rushing from behind was flung away like a chunk of wood.
Kyle used the momentum of Dark's movement to swing his sword in the opposite direction.
KWAANG!
Kyle had already reached the highest tier of skill. Each of his swings released powerful mana that swept away the monsters.
But the faster the kills, the quicker his mana was being consumed. If he kept going like this, he'd burn out soon.
'Just a little longer…'
Kyle took a deep breath and looked back.
The children were farther away now, but still within a dangerous range. The dark mages and priests from the Salvation Church were still in play.
He needed to push a little harder, a little longer.
"Dark!"
"Hold on tight!"
Dark tore into the horde at incredible speed. Kyle twisted his upper body atop him, slashing through monsters in all directions.
KWAANG! CRACK!
Their sword and claws crossed perfectly, striking down the monsters.
Whenever Kyle was in danger, Dark instinctively dodged for him. And when Dark didn't have room to move, Kyle cleared the path with his blade.
Neither led the other—they moved as one, responding to glances, reacting to faint presences. As if they were a single body.
It was a flawless synergy.
GRAAAAAH!
The monsters gradually concentrated more on the pair. Thanks to that, the dwarf children had a better chance of escaping.
Even as he moved nonstop, Dark muttered,
"Maybe it's time for us to start pulling out too?"
Kyle hesitated for a moment, then shook his head.
"Not yet. The kids are still slow. They're dwarves—slower than humans."
"You're stubborn. But I get why a scruffy guy like you became a hero's companion."
"Let's push a little more."
If they were only facing slow undead, Kyle would've withdrawn without hesitation. But the modified chimeras were incredibly fast.
And who knew what tricks the remaining dark mages might still have?
He had to buy more time.
KWAANG!
Kyle unleashed his mana without reservation, blasting the monsters again. Dark also moved swiftly, backing Kyle up.
The more fiercely Kyle and Dark raged, the more the wave of monsters shifted direction toward them.
The monsters had no intelligence. Having been given only the command to kill any living being they saw, they could do nothing but keep getting drawn into Kyle and Dark's movements.
One of the dark mages commanding them narrowed his eyes and muttered,
"What's this? Why is a human helping the dwarves?"
His skill was exceptional. And the wolf he was riding, something like a spirit, moved unlike any ordinary creature.
The dark mage hesitated for a moment, then asked the one beside him,
"That enormous magic—looks like he can't use it anymore… What should we do?"
"Hmm… If we ignore that human and keep pushing forward, the damage will only grow. He's more capable than expected. Looks like he's at the very edge of the high-level."
"Then wouldn't it be better to just kill him here and now? At this rate, we'll take losses and delay the march."
Saying that, the dark mage glanced back.
The priest of the Salvation Church said nothing, as if silently telling them to handle it themselves.
The dark mage next to him, after a moment of reading the room, responded,
"That would be best. Those idiot monsters are getting dragged around."
"Click… Because of that guy, we'll end up wasting more mana than we need."
It took a tremendous amount of mana to move this massive monster horde properly. That was why they had simply let the monsters loose.
Left alone, the monsters would just chase life on their own.
But now, they had no choice but to expend mana and give new commands.
The dark mages raised their arms and issued the order.
"Kill that human… He must die…"
In an instant, the formation of the monsters rippled, and all of them began surging toward Kyle.
Even the ones too far to have seen him before now locked onto Kyle with terrifying precision.
GRAAAAAAH!
Kyle and Dark also realized that the monsters' movements had changed.
But instead of panic, Kyle grinned.
"Good. It should've been like this from the start."
Despite the thousands of monsters charging toward him, Kyle wasn't afraid.
On the contrary, he dove deeper, faster, toward the very heart of the monster horde.
"Not a single one of you is getting out of here."
KWAANG!
Kyle once again unleashed his mana, sweeping through the monsters. His sword tore through the ground, and monsters exploded in every direction.
But there were simply too many. And as all of them began seriously targeting only Kyle, wounds began to appear across his body.
Dark was also shrinking, bit by bit.
Thanks to Dark, Kyle had been able to conserve his strength until now—but that time seemed nearly up.
Kyle's breathing grew rough, and his eyes were bloodshot. His body was nearing its limits.
But his sword didn't stop. No, it became even sharper, more precise.
Don't collapse.
You can do this.
Don't back down.
Whispering to himself like a mantra, Kyle once more unleashed his mana.
KWAANG!
The blast of mana split the center of the monster horde.
The shockwave shattered numerous monsters without a sound.
Not missing the opportunity, Dark lunged forward, slashing with his claws.
KWAANG! KWAANG! KWAANG!
Monster blood, flesh, and shattered bones flew into the air.
In this moment, Kyle and Dark were a stronger shield than any nation's army.
One by one, again and again—
Kyle and Dark wiped out hundreds of monsters.
The priest of the Salvation Church, watching the scene, furrowed his brow.
'…A remarkable human. And that spirit he rides as well.'
It wasn't just their raw strength. Their combat sense was extraordinary. They manipulated the monsters masterfully, achieving maximum effect with minimal force.
Of course, if he stepped in now, he could suppress them—but he had no intention of intervening just yet.
'That human is at the realm of a high-level knight. His swordsmanship is flawless.'
High-level fighters could wound even superhumans if they let their guard down. Especially someone with technique as refined as this one.
And then there was the powerful magic he'd used earlier—that still lingered in the priest's mind.
Perhaps he was conserving it for a stronger opponent.
The Salvation Church's core doctrine was preservation of strength. They were outnumbered by the human alliance, and thus had to fight smarter.
Suspicious as ever, he spoke to the dark mages.
"This has dragged on long enough. Get rid of them now."
The two dark mages tensed slightly. The human rampaging on the battlefield was more powerful than either of them.
And the strange spirit was clearly no weakling either.
Still, they couldn't disobey the priest of the Salvation Church.
"…Understood."
Even so, they believed it was doable. There were still plenty of monsters left, and the enemies' strength had been noticeably depleted.
The dark mages began to move in secret.
KWAANG!
Each time Kyle struck, the battlefield fell into silence. The once overwhelming horde had now been reduced to less than half.
He had pushed himself to the very edge.
And the cost was becoming clear—his body was growing heavy. Even the sound of his breathing carried the weight of exhaustion.
Dark was in no better shape. Clearly smaller than before, Dark assessed the situation and spoke.
"Let's fall back. This is enough."
"…Not yet. Not yet."
Kyle stubbornly shook his head.
True, the children had gotten farther away—but it still wasn't safe. From the monsters' behavior, it was clear the dark mages had taken action.
If they exerted their power, they could forcibly increase the monsters' speed.
Just a bit more—he had to endure a bit more, then escape.
Dark growled,
"Hey, you idiot. If you keep fighting, you'll die too. It's better to catch up with the kids and block from the rear."
"If a melee breaks out back there, the kids will get caught up in it."
"Didn't you say you hated it when Yulian and Deneb threw themselves into helping others like suckers?"
At that, Kyle chuckled softly.
"Yeah, I did. But like I said—they jumped in even when they didn't have to. I'm not like that right now."
"What's the difference?!"
"I told you. Right now, I'm the only one who can protect those kids."
"You damn fool…"
Dark was about to curse again, but suddenly twisted his body.
FWOOOSH!
A hazy mist of black mana swept in without warning.
Dark reared up to block it.
KWAANG!
"Ghhk!"
Kyle tumbled from Dark's back. He quickly raised his head.
"Dark!"
"Damn it…"
Dark's body had shrunk to nearly half its original size.
The sudden and powerful attack had forced him to expend a significant amount of energy.
Dark quickly tapped into Ghislain's consciousness to assess the situation. He was about to ask for help.
'Damn…'
But things weren't going well on that end either. Everyone was barely hanging on while protecting Deneb.
There was no one who could come to help.
And then, another powerful force surged toward them. Dark turned back and shouted,
"Run!"
KWAANG!
With those final words, Dark's body dispersed into the air and vanished.
