Chapter 110 - The Tower Price

The eastern quarter holds nine hundred households behind an ornamental wall, four of them with private plate units on retainer. Nothing in the standing procedure explains how a garrison evacuates a district whose residents have never once been counted.

Luna had the arrival figure at four hours when the market row conversation ended. She had it at three hours and forty minutes by the time the operation reached the park line, which is the only correction she has apologised for.

The Ivory Guild tower stands at the top of the park, nine storeys of dressed stone above a single ground entrance. Four hundred and six people were inside it when the column came along the canal line.

That figure covers rather more than guild staff, which is why it surprised the garrison clerk who wrote it down. Ivory opened its doors to the park line households at the sixth hour, on an instruction nobody in the building has claimed since.

[Structure: Ivory Guild tower. Occupancy: 406.]
