After a few seconds, you pull off to the side of the road, parking the car. The sudden stop made Mei lift her head up. She quickly wiped her eyes before turning to you.
"Mei, it's not your fault I said that. I didn't even really mean it." You assure, reaching a hand over to rest on her back.
"I mean, do you wanna get rid of your panda?" you ask softly.
Mei remained quiet for a few seconds, her gaze moving to outside your car window. "I…I don't know. Grandma Wu told me that the more I use my panda, the harder it'll get for them to get rid of it. And that her scar was from my mom. What if I hurt someone too?"
"You're not going to, Mei. I know you would never do that." You assure, still rubbing her back. "Besides, you were taught by the best in how to manage your panda." You smile, hoping that would cheer her up a bit.
Mei does indeed smile, a soft chuckle leaving her. "Yeah, I was. And I got friends that love me no matter what." She added, now leaning her forehead against your chest. Her arms then wrapped around your body, hugging you tight.
You hug her back, holding her close for as long as she wanted. After about a minute, she pulled away, wiping her eyes and nose again.
"We should get going. Tyler's probably whining about me not showing up." Mei remarked, laying back in her seat.
"Alright." You nod, putting the car back in drive and getting on the road. As you drove, you glance in the back seat at the costume Mei brought. You're tempted to mention it to her, but you decide against it.
Whatever Mei does is on her, she's her own person, with every right to be as scared, confused, and angry as she wants to be. And she deserved to go to this party behind her folks' backs. As long as she kept her cool, nothing could go wrong
