Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 - Sly Contract

Nathan's mind was racing. In his Dad's game, he was a magic swordsman, one of the hidden classes. He acquired it by being arrogant toward a certain noble, and it caught the attention of an elf NPC. The elf wanted Nathan to humiliate the kid further, and he would teach him a class. After completing it, he got the magic swordsman class. 'WHY COULDNT YOU AT LEAST BE A SWORD!' Faced with this challenge, Nathan steeled himself. He decided to take this challenge head-on. 'So what, I can't at least be a swordsman. I'll be the strongest assassin in this world!'

"So Nott, why were you in this cave in the first place?" Nott blushed so hard that her grey skin became a slight shade of blue. "Um, do you see, what happened was a big misunderstanding, right, and I was building my domain somewhere else, and I didn't know it was someone else's land already. They said I 'Attacked them and tried to steal their land,' but they were the ones walking to me yelling at me, so I threw daggers at them, and it blew out of proportion...."

As Nott keeps rambling, Nathan is thinking to himself, 'So she's imprisoned here, and now I'm a wanted criminal too because I'm contracted to her great. My luck stat must be -100. "Get reincarnated," they said. "You'll get overpowered," they said. IM A WANTED CRIMINAL OFF THE RIP! I swear imma-'

"You know that since we are contracted, I can hear what you are thinking." Nathan looked over to see Nott making a grumpy face, sitting cross-legged in the air. She looked totally different now; she was about the size of Nathan's hand. "You technically aren't a wanted criminal yet; you would have to prove that you're in a contract with me. Since I can hide myself, you'll be fine, and you're also a race no one knows about, say it's a part of that when it comes to your skills!" Nott is beaming with pride as she tries to calm down Nathan.

"So why am I only limited to daggers?" Nathan didn't receive any when he signed the contract, so why would she bring that up? Now that he has darkness and has to work with daggers, he has been thinking of many different ways to time them together.

"You should feel a space next to your heart, tug on that space with your mana, and you should get what I mean." Upon completing the contract with a spirit, the contractor receives the spirit's soul weapon. As soon as Nathan touched that space with his mana, two twin daggers, the color of onyx, materialized in his hands. Not the shimmery video-game materialize, no; it was like the daggers were summoned from the darkness itself.

"These are sick, and incredibly sharp!" Nathan tested the weight on his finger, and they practically weighed nothing, but holding their hilts felt like he could cut the work in half. He also tried some shadow movement and found he could still carry it. 'The skill says I can't use items while shadow walking, so why do I still have the daggers?'

"It's because they are linked to your soul, not through the system. You always be able to wield these blades no matter the situation. Be careful, though, if you look at the darkness too long, it will start looking back. Anyways, I'm tired now, so I'm going to rest." Nott yawned sheepishly and lay down. As soon as she fell asleep, she disappeared.

"WAIT! NOTT! WHERE DID YOU GO!" Nathan looked around frantically. 'She could've at least helped me out while she was still up, maybe told me where to go?!'

"I can still hear you," Nathan said, confused about where her voice coming from looked around, thinking she was hiding somewhere. "You won't be able to find me, I'm in the same space you store the daggers in. It's convenient for both of us; I can recover my energy here and hide away. Leave the cave and keep running in the opposite direction of the opening; eventually, you'll find a town. I would try out your new stats before you leave, though. This cave is a good training ground."

"Good to know. Finally, someone is willing to give some actual help. Nail if your still listening you should take some tips!." Nathan looked up at the sky as he spoke, and Nott just watched, 'He must be crazy, who even is Nail?'

Nathan, excited to start testing, rushed deeper into the cave. As if remembering something, he stopped immediately. "Oh yeah, my status menu, I wonder what went up due to the contract."

Nathan was stupefied. He was hoping for a lot more, but what did change was still huge for Nathan. Shadow movement no longer drained mana. Technically, he could use it forever now! 'Why did my charisma, wisdom, and speed go up by one, though?' Regardless, he wasn't complaining about free stats. A newfound energy was coursing through Nathan as he excitedly started skipping down the cave.

Nail was just as excited, "HE ACTUALLY SIGNED THE CONTRACT WITH A SPIRIT! Not only have you made it deeper into the forest than all of your predecessors, but you even manage to claim a spirit. Nathan, you'll be the one to bring my plans to fruition, and as every other story goes, since you're my hero, I'll grant you the best reward." Nail's face and figure began to contort as he laughed maniacally. 'Nathan, make it all the way to the end of this story for my sake and for your own world's sake.'
