The cold bit through my hoodie the second we stepped outside.
It was stupid to grill in December in Bloom, but Pa said "good news deserves smoke" and Pai just handed him the tongs and didn't argue. So here we were. Freezing, happy, and ridiculous.
Daniel had driven forty minute from Houston the minute Pai called him. He and Kolli went into town an hour ago for "special BBQ stuff." That meant Kolli was picking out cheese and Daniel was buying way too much meat. They'd be back in a bit.
Which left me. Alone. With Pa and Pai. And a decision I'd been chewing on for weeks.
Pa was rubbing half an onion on the grill grates like it was a religious ritual. Pai was setting out plates and humming some old song in Portuguese under his breath. The ranch smelled like mesquite and coffee and home.
I should've waited. I should've let us have one perfect day first.
But I couldn't. Not with the ultrasound pictures still on the fridge and the word 'baby' still ringing in my ears.
