Sylvia felt frozen to the core, "My King, I thought.........."
Vernon didn't stand up, and it seemed as if her would never."Carry on My Queen."
Sylvia was looking for an escape, "I'm sure that you are tired from the journey and we can do this another time."
"No, you don't decide as to what I do."
"I wasn't My King, I was being considerate of your time."
"Do you know what I want to know?"
"Yes, My King, please tell me."
She wanted to appease him badly, but saying those words grated on her. She felt diminished, and that made her sick to her stomach.
It felt as if she had swallowed thorns.
"Why, when I arrived, instead of my beautiful wife greeting me, I was told that she had decided to take a trip alone."
Sylvia felt blank and said the first ridiculous thought that crossed her mind,
"Wow, you are back, you are........"
She stopped, he was not saying a word, as a bit far from her, she could feel his rage and something else.
"My King, I'm so happy that you have made it back, safe and sound."
He cocked his head, "Are you My Queen?"
"Yes, how could I not?"
"Not being here to greet me says enough."
She swallowed, "I needed some me time."
"Your time?"
Divert attention to something else,
"Why are we stuck in the past about things that don't matter?"
"My wife's whereabouts are the most important thing to me. What kind of King would I be if I didn't care for my Queen?"
Sylvia swallowed, "I'm back, and that is all that matters."
"I would think that you would be by the explanation part as to why you went gallivanting when your husband was fighting for our kingdom."
"I needed a distraction, or I thought I was going to lose it, well, my mind, of course."
"Lose it?"
Maybe he would buy it, "Yes, I just couldn't bear the thought of losing you."
"You couldn't?"
"Yes, My King, what would happen to me if something happened to you?"
"So this was about you?"
"Yes, and No. It was about us, Vernon. I wasn't too thrilled to be going on this trip; it wasn't planned. I just needed some air and a different scenery."
"I have eyes and ears everywhere, Sylvia, and I know what you were up to, how thrilled you were during the. Whole. Trip."
"You were spying on me?"
"Watching over my wife is my duty, and stop trying to change the subject. Explain yourself before I make up my mind."
Sylvia swallowed and had to keep it together, this was the last shot she had to make something good up.
"I had to keep it together for the people, if I acted as if nothing was wrong, then everyone would follow suit. So it showed in a way that I had everything under control."
"You have everything under control."
She nodded, "Yes, but it was to show everyone in the kingdom that they had nothing to worry about."
"By having fun?" He asked sceptically with a mix of disbelief.
"No, it was to take the edge off and show the people that it's okay to take some time to yourself to breathe...…"
He waited for her to carry on,
"For them to know it's alright to take some time off to think about their loved ones."
He looked at her, and she decided to come clean,
"I just needed some air."
"We can do this all night."
"We can, my story won't be changing."
"Your story."
"Yes, well an explanation can be a story."
"Sylvia, come here."
"I prefer this side of my room."
"Now."
Sylvia began making her way across the room slowly, she stood in front of him. He grabbed her by the shoulders,
"Sylvia.............."
She closed her eyes as he shook a bit, but stopped. Nothing happened, so she opened her eyes slowly.
She saw that Vernon had slouched a bit, his eyes were shut, and beads of sweat broke out,
"Are you okay?"
He didn't say anything, he groaned, she felt how hot he was,
"What is wrong with you?"
"Shut up, Sylvia, let me breathe."
She shut her mouth and felt his weight on her. He was very heavy, and Sylvia was almost holding him up.
