Considering the little fellow's eating and excreting habits, she prepared a sand basin with some dry grass on top and placed it near the warmest part of the kang, covering it with animal skin. Afterwards, she stored the leftover rice porridge along with the stone pot in a small hole next to the stove for insulation.
After it got cold, she cooked inside the cave. She lit a fire under the stove and cooked on top, which helped to save firewood. She used to cook outside, worrying about the fumes, but now with everything outside covered in ice and snow, she couldn't afford to worry about that anymore.
She thought she would be up countless times that night, just like someone taking care of a baby, but the little fellow was unusually sensible. He only woke up once to pee and poop in the middle of the night. After feeding him the leftover rice porridge from the stone pot, he slept soundly until dawn and didn't fuss at all.
