Three days.
Five German Army outposts on the Western Front were completely erased from the map.
Soldier Boy announced his existence to the entire European battlefield in the most direct way possible.
He became a warhammer.
Every time it fell, it smashed a bloody crater into the territory of the Third Reich.
Lynn followed behind this warhammer.
He used his lens to record the moment Soldier Boy tore apart a bunker.
He used words to depict the expression of despair and fear mixed on the faces of the German Army soldiers.
Every photo, every report, was like a bullet fired into the hearts of Allied Forces soldiers that had grown numb from the war.
The legend of Soldier Boy fermented and expanded at a near-manic speed under Lynn's pen.
"He is not fighting, he is hunting!"
"I saw him use his shield to smash an MG42 into scrap metal, along with the head of the machine gunner!"
"He couldn't even be bothered to dodge artillery fire; those shrapnel fragments couldn't even leave a white mark on his skin."
This was the effect he wanted.
Until a communications officer interrupted his thoughts.
"Mr. Morris! There is a communication for you at Colonel Phillips' command post, calling from the United States!"
The United States?
Lynn raised an eyebrow.
He followed the communications officer quickly to the command center.
Phillips handed him a crackling receiver, his eyes filled with a hint of inquiry.
"It's for you. How did you two end up together?"
Lynn ignored his question.
As he took the receiver, he heard an excited voice coming from the other end.
"Mr. Morris! Is that you? It's Dr. Erskine!"
"Dr., you sound like you're in a good mood."
"Good? It's more than good! It's perfect! It's simply a gift from God!"
Dr. Erskine's voice rose an octave due to his excitement.
"I found him! Steve Rogers! The young man you mentioned!"
"My God, I have never seen such a soul! He is as thin as a reed, yet he has a heart braver than a lion! He is the person I have been looking for!"
Dr. Erskine on the other end of the line incoherently vented his ecstasy.
"I have convinced the higher-ups, used all my connections, and brought him to Camp Lehigh! The Strategic Scientific Reserve has been officially established, and the project is about to launch!"
"Mr. Morris, you must come! You were the first to discover him; you must witness all of this with your own eyes!"
Lynn listened quietly.
There was not the slightest change in his expression.
But his heart was beating faster uncontrollably.
It was done!
The script for Captain America had officially begun.
"I understand. Wait for my good news."
He hung up the communication and returned the receiver to Phillips.
The tent fell into silence for a moment.
Lynn did not leave immediately.
He quickly sorted through the current situation in his mind.
The butterfly's wings had already flapped.
Because of Soldier Boy's existence, Phillips, who should have been stationed in the rear to oversee the super soldier selection, was still pinned to the European front line.
So now, who was the person in charge of the newly established Strategic Scientific ReserveMilitary?
Did this hide new variables, or new opportunities?
On Soldier Boy's side, after this period of "free-range" living, this Beast had become completely immersed in a cycle of fighting, killing, and then enjoying the adoration of thousands and an unlimited supply of alcohol and women.
As long as the fuel was sufficient and the goal was clear, he would keep running.
As his "instruction manual," leaving for now shouldn't cause any major trouble.
Go!
Must go!
After thinking it over repeatedly.
Lynn looked up, meeting Phillips' inquiry.
"Colonel, I need to leave for a while."
"What?"
The cigar Phillips had just lit almost fell out of his mouth.
"You're leaving? Now? Then what about that treasure you have in your hands? Who will manage him?"
"It is precisely for him that I must leave."
Lynn's lie came easily, his face wearing a look of gravity, as if considering the big picture.
"Colonel, Soldier Boy's power is unstable, and one could even say it is dangerous."
"Dr. Erskine's project is to create an insurance that can coordinate with him, or even... keep him in check when necessary."
"I need to go back and assist the Dr. in completing this project, to ensure that this trump card in our hands does not one day turn into a blade pointed at ourselves."
Phillips puffed hard on his cigar.
The exhaled smoke blurred the expression on his face.
Check and balance?
Insurance?
Soldier Boy was truly useful.
But that guy was a powder keg; no one knew when he would explode!
Did Lynn's words sound reasonable?
It even made him feel at ease.
"Then if you leave, what if he starts causing trouble?"
"It's simple, Colonel."
Lynn's tone became relaxed, as if teaching a simple farming technique.
"Treat him like a stud bull. Give him the best fodder, the strongest liquor, the most beautiful cows..."
"Then, tell him which field needs plowing."
"As long as his vanity and primal desires are satisfied, he won't have the leisure to think about anything else. If he wants to fight, give him enemies; if he wants to praise, plaster his face all over the newspapers."
"He won't even notice I've left."
This vulgar yet incredibly true "taming insight" made the corner of Phillips' eye twitch.
But deep down, he had to admit that this was the goddamn truth.
After pacifying Phillips, Lynn turned and walked toward Soldier Boy's barracks.
Pushing open the door.
A scent of decadence hit his face.
Soldier Boy was leaning on the sofa, shirtless.
Two blonde, blue-eyed women, one was feeding him grapes.
The other was massaging his shoulders.
Seeing Lynn enter, he just lazily raised his eyelids and said indistinctly: "Any new fun? Those Germans in that bullshit outpost last time weren't even as tough as my armpit hair! Too boring."
"None for now. I'm here to tell you that I'm leaving for a while to go back to the United States to take care of some business."
"Oh."
"Then get lost, don't delay my enjoyment. Remember to tell that old guy to find me some tough bones to chew on, otherwise my shield is going to rust."
An expected reaction.
Lynn nodded and turned to leave.
"Wait."
Soldier Boy suddenly called out to him.
He pushed the women beside him away and sat up straight on the sofa.
In those blue eyes, the usual arrogance and violence were gone.
Carrying a seriousness he hadn't even noticed himself.
"Are you... looking for a bigger stage for me by going back this time?"
Lynn's footsteps stopped, and he turned back to meet Soldier Boy's gaze.
"Of course."
A meaningful smile appeared on Lynn's face.
"A... stage where the whole World can see you."
Soldier Boy grinned with satisfaction, slumped back into the sofa, and waved his hand.
Lynn closed the door, shutting out the decadent sounds from inside the room.
