Connor
This was the part where I knew I should've told him sooner.
Edward and I had a history of lying to each other. Even small things. It's why we didn't make it the first time. If I wanted this to be different, I couldn't start by hiding shit from him.
The universe would help me if Harper already told him and Edward was just waiting to see if I'd lie.
The last thing I needed was to make Harper look like the honest one.
"The company was actually the Carmichael Group," I said. I shifted back on the hotel bed and dragged a hand through my hair. "I didn't realize it until I was already there."
"Oh," Edward said. Quiet. Too quiet. "Is that so?"
"It is." I forced a breath out. "I was supposed to meet someone else, but Harper came instead."
The line went silent. For a second I pulled the phone from my ear to make sure we hadn't cut.
"Can you hear me?" I asked.
"Yes, I can," he said, and his voice had gone flat. "How did your meeting with Harper come to be?"
