Chapter 5 - First Clash

The forest remained silent.

Three figures stood inside the clearing.

Hashirama looked openly curious.

Madara looked ready to attack.

Hao looked amused.

For several moments, no one moved.

Then Hashirama stepped forward with the same cheerful smile he had worn when he entered the clearing.

"My name is Hashirama Senju."

He pointed toward himself before gesturing toward the black-haired boy beside him.

"And this is Madara."

Madara's expression darkened.

"I can introduce myself."

Hashirama laughed awkwardly.

"Right. Sorry."

His attention immediately returned to Hao.

"So, what's your name?"

"And what clan are you from?"

"Your clothes are strange, and I've never seen anything like those things covering your ears."

Hashirama leaned forward, studying Hao without even trying to hide his interest.

"Are they armor?"

"No."

"Do they help you hear things from far away?"

"No."

"Can I try them?"

"No."

Madara stared at Hashirama in disbelief.

"Stop acting like an idiot."

Hashirama scratched his cheek.

"I was only asking."

Hao watched their exchange in silence.

The cheerful boy spoke without caution, while the other questioned every movement and every word.

Two completely different personalities.

Yet the ancient souls resting within them remained connected by an invisible bond.

Interesting.

"My name is Hao."

Hashirama's eyes brightened.

"Hao..."

He repeated the name as though committing it to memory.

Hao continued calmly.

"I come from the Asakura Clan."

"The Asakura Clan?"

Hashirama tilted his head.

"I've never heard of it."

"You wouldn't have."

Hao's golden eyes remained relaxed.

"The Asakura are the most powerful lineage of shamans."

Hashirama blinked.

"Shamans?"

"Those who communicate with spirits."

Hashirama glanced around the clearing.

Although he could not clearly see the countless souls gathered there, he could still feel their presence through the forest.

"So those things Madara saw..."

"They really were spirits?"

"Yes."

Hashirama's expression filled with wonder rather than fear.

"That's amazing."

Madara did not share his enthusiasm.

His Sharingan remained fixed on Hao.

"Asakura."

He tested the unfamiliar name.

"No clan by that name exists anywhere near this territory."

Hao gave no answer.

Madara took one slow step forward.

"Which country are you from?"

Silence.

"Who sent you?"

Hao's expression did not change.

"Are you spying on the Senju?"

Hashirama frowned.

"Madara—"

"Or the Uchiha?"

Madara's voice sharpened.

"What is your mission?"

"Why did you come here?"

"What are you planning?"

Hao looked at him for several seconds.

Madara's suspicion was not unreasonable.

In this era, strangers rarely wandered through clan territory without purpose.

Children learned to distrust before they learned to understand.

Still...

Hao found the young Uchiha's hostility entertaining.

"You ask many questions."

Madara's fingers tightened around the kunai hidden near his waist.

"And you're avoiding every one of them."

"I have no reason to answer."

Madara's eyes narrowed.

"Then I'll force the answers out of you."

Hashirama quickly moved between them.

"Wait."

Madara ignored him.

"Move."

"He's not attacking us."

"That doesn't mean he's harmless."

Madara's gaze never left Hao.

"He knew our names before we properly introduced ourselves. He entered this territory without anyone detecting him. He has no clan markings, no visible supplies, and no chakra signature."

Madara lowered his stance.

"Everything about him is suspicious."

Hao's smile widened slightly.

At least one of them understood the danger of the unknown.

Hashirama sighed.

"Can't we just talk first?"

Madara disappeared.

The earth beneath his sandals cracked as chakra surged through his legs.

He crossed the clearing in a blur.

His kunai flashed toward Hao's throat.

There was no warning.

No hesitation.

Only a precise killing stroke aimed at the soft flesh beneath Hao's jaw.

Hashirama's eyes widened.

"Madara!"

The blade passed through empty air.

Madara's pupils contracted.

Hao was still standing in front of him.

At least...

That was what his eyes had told him.

But his kunai had missed by less than a finger's width.

Hao had tilted his head.

Nothing more.

Madara twisted his wrist and slashed sideways.

Hao leaned back.

The blade sliced through several strands of brown hair but failed to touch skin.

Madara followed with a low kick aimed at Hao's knee.

Hao raised his foot just enough for the attack to sweep beneath him.

Madara planted one hand against the ground and spun, using the missed kick to launch his other heel toward Hao's ribs.

Hao stepped forward.

Not backward.

He entered the space inside Madara's attack, causing the boy's heel to pass harmlessly behind him.

Then Hao lightly touched Madara's shoulder.

The contact appeared gentle.

Yet Madara felt his balance vanish.

His body turned in midair.

He landed on one knee and slid across the soil, leaving a long trail in the clearing.

Madara immediately looked up.

Hao had not followed him.

He remained exactly where he had been standing.

Calm.

Untouched.

Almost bored.

"You rely heavily on your eyes," Hao observed.

Madara gritted his teeth.

"My eyes are enough."

He drew three shuriken and hurled them in rapid succession.

The first flew directly toward Hao's face.

The second curved toward his right side.

The third struck the second weapon in midair, changing both trajectories.

Hao watched them approach.

A slight movement of his fingers sent a pulse of Furyoku through the air.

The first shuriken stopped before his forehead.

The other two froze at his sides.

They hung motionless.

Madara stared.

There were no wires.

No magnetic tools.

No chakra threads.

Nothing.

Hao turned his hand.

The three shuriken rotated in the air and gently dropped onto the ground.

"Creative."

Madara's expression hardened.

He had expected surprise.

Instead, Hao had complimented him like a teacher praising a child.

That enraged him more than mockery would have.

Madara rushed forward again.

This time, Hao noticed the chakra flowing through the boy's muscles before he moved.

It gathered in the legs first.

Then the spine.

Then the shoulders and arms.

A highly efficient internal circulation system.

Furyoku was shaped by the strength of the soul.

Chakra was generated from both body and spirit.

Different principles.

Different strengths.

Madara threw a straight punch.

Hao turned his shoulder.

The fist brushed past his robe.

An elbow followed.

Hao lowered his head.

A knee rose toward his chest.

Hao placed two fingers against Madara's leg and redirected it aside.

Madara used the momentum to spin and draw another kunai.

Hao caught his wrist.

Madara immediately struck with his free hand.

Hao released him and stepped around the blow.

Madara pivoted.

Hao moved with him.

Every time the young Uchiha changed direction, Hao was already standing in the safest possible place.

He wasted no energy.

His movements were not flashy.

They were precise.

Perfectly controlled.

Each dodge missed Madara's attacks by the smallest possible distance.

A kunai passed beside Hao's eye.

A fist crossed beneath his chin.

A kick swept past his ankle.

None landed.

Hashirama watched without blinking.

At first, he thought Hao was simply faster.

Then he realized the truth.

Hao was not only reacting.

He was moving before Madara committed to each attack.

"He knows what Madara is going to do..."

Hashirama whispered.

Madara heard him.

His jaw tightened.

He changed his rhythm.

A slow step.

A sudden burst.

A false strike toward the chest.

A hidden blade toward the stomach.

Hao turned his body sideways.

The hidden kunai stopped against the folds of his robe.

Before Madara could push forward, Hao tapped the inside of his elbow.

Madara's arm went numb.

The kunai slipped from his fingers.

Hao caught it before it hit the ground.

"You dropped this."

He offered the weapon back.

Madara stared at it.

For a heartbeat, he did not move.

Then anger flashed across his face.

He knocked Hao's hand away and jumped backward.

Hao allowed it.

Madara landed beside a tree and formed hand seals.

Fire chakra surged through his chest.

Hao's eyes sharpened slightly.

Madara inhaled deeply.

"Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!"

A massive sphere of flame erupted from his mouth.

The fireball tore through the clearing, scorching the grass and blackening the trunks of nearby trees.

Heat washed over Hashirama.

He raised an arm to shield his face.

The flames swallowed Hao completely.

"Madara!"

Hashirama stared at the inferno.

"That was too much!"

Madara kept his Sharingan focused on the flames.

"No."

His voice was tense.

"It wasn't enough."

The fire suddenly split.

Not extinguished.

Separated.

A narrow path opened through the center of the blaze.

Hao walked through it.

Flames twisted around his body without touching him.

His white robe remained spotless.

His long hair drifted behind him in the rising heat.

For the first time, genuine interest appeared in his golden eyes.

"So chakra can be transformed into natural elements."

Madara took a step back.

Hao raised one hand.

The fire surrounding him began to move.

Madara's technique folded inward, spiraling above Hao's palm like a living serpent.

The enormous fireball compressed.

Smaller.

Denser.

Until it became a single sphere of flame no larger than an apple.

Hao studied it.

"Your control is crude."

His fingers closed.

The fire vanished.

Madara's Sharingan trembled.

He had never seen anyone seize control of another person's technique so effortlessly.

There had been no opposing fire jutsu.

No hand seals.

No visible chakra.

Hao had treated the attack like a curious object placed before him.

Hashirama stepped forward.

"Madara, stop."

Madara did not answer.

"He's only defending himself."

"That's exactly the problem."

Madara's breathing had become heavier.

"He hasn't attacked once."

Hashirama frowned.

Madara looked at Hao with growing unease.

"He isn't taking us seriously."

Hao smiled.

The Uchiha was perceptive.

Madara clenched his fists.

"Hashirama."

"No."

"We need to find out what he is."

"I said no."

Madara glanced at him.

"And when he enters your clan's territory?"

Hashirama fell silent.

"When he appears before your brothers?"

Madara continued.

"When he decides that we're beneath him?"

Hashirama looked toward Hao.

There was no hostility in the young man's expression.

Yet Hashirama could not deny the pressure surrounding him.

Hao had shown neither effort nor fear.

They knew nothing about his motives.

Nothing about his limits.

Hashirama exhaled slowly.

"I don't want to fight him."

"Neither do I."

Madara lowered his stance again.

"But that doesn't mean we can let him leave without understanding the threat."

Hao heard every word.

More importantly...

He heard every thought beneath them.

Madara's suspicion.

Hashirama's concern.

Their fear for their clans.

Their refusal to abandon one another despite pretending otherwise.

Humans were predictable.

Fear led to hostility.

Attachment created weakness.

Again and again, Hao had witnessed the same pattern.

He had once believed humanity incapable of escaping it.

Perhaps this world would prove no different.

Still...

He wanted data.

"If you intend to continue," Hao said, "then both of you should attack."

Hashirama stared at him.

"You want us to fight you?"

"I want to understand chakra."

Madara's eyes darkened.

"So this really is an experiment to you."

"At the moment."

The answer was honest.

Too honest.

Hashirama's cheerful expression disappeared.

"We're not tools."

Hao looked at him.

For the first time, there was steel behind Hashirama's gentle voice.

"We're people."

Hao's smile remained.

"Then show me what makes you different."

The air changed.

Hashirama and Madara exchanged a glance.

No discussion was needed.

They had fought beside one another before.

Competed against one another.

Learned one another's habits without realizing it.

Madara moved first.

He hurled six shuriken into the air.

Their paths crossed unpredictably as several collided and changed direction.

Hao tracked each weapon.

Hashirama rushed behind them.

He formed hand seals while running.

"Earth Release: Earth Flow Spears!"

The ground erupted.

Jagged stone spikes shot upward beneath Hao's feet.

Hao leapt.

The shuriken converged around him in midair.

Madara appeared above him.

A kunai drove downward toward Hao's head.

Hao twisted in the air.

He caught Madara's wrist and used the boy's momentum to swing him aside.

Madara released the kunai.

The weapon dropped toward Hao's back.

Hashirama emerged from below and struck upward with a chakra-enhanced fist.

Hao placed one foot against Hashirama's forearm.

He used the rising punch as a platform, launching himself higher.

The falling kunai missed him.

Madara caught it.

Hashirama jumped after Hao.

Madara kicked off a nearby tree.

Both boys attacked from opposite sides.

Hao's eyes moved once.

Hashirama's fist came from the left.

Madara's blade came from the right.

Hao dropped straight down.

The two attacks nearly struck each other.

Madara twisted away at the last instant.

Hashirama pulled his punch.

Hao landed between them.

His foot touched the ground without making a sound.

He swept one leg outward.

Madara jumped.

Hashirama blocked.

The impact blasted Hashirama across the clearing.

His sandals carved trenches through the soil before he stopped himself.

Madara descended from above.

Hao caught his ankle.

Madara's eyes widened.

Hao spun once and threw him toward Hashirama.

Hashirama caught his friend.

Both boys were driven backward by the force.

They crashed through a dead tree.

The trunk exploded into splinters.

Dust rose from the impact.

For a moment, the clearing was still.

Then Hashirama and Madara emerged.

Bruised.

Breathing hard.

Still standing.

Hao regarded them with mild approval.

Their bodies were far more durable than ordinary humans.

Chakra reinforced their muscles, bones, and internal organs.

But their greatest strength was not physical.

They adapted quickly.

Every failed attack immediately became information.

Every mistake was corrected.

Madara wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.

"He's predicting us."

Hashirama nodded.

"Then we stop thinking."

Madara looked at him.

Hashirama smiled faintly.

"We trust each other."

Madara's expression tightened.

But he understood.

They moved again.

This time, their coordination changed.

There were no signals.

No visible preparation.

Hashirama attacked without deciding his entire sequence in advance.

Madara reacted to Hashirama instead of following a plan.

Their movements became spontaneous.

Fluid.

One created openings while the other exploited them.

Hashirama rushed low.

Madara went high.

Hao stepped aside.

Hashirama changed direction instantly and grabbed Hao's robe.

Madara's fist approached Hao's face.

Hao leaned back.

Hashirama released the robe and swept Hao's legs.

Hao jumped.

Madara struck in midair.

Hao raised an arm to block.

For the first time—

Contact.

Madara's fist struck Hao's forearm.

A shock wave burst through the clearing.

The ground beneath them cracked.

Nearby trees shook violently.

Leaves rained from the canopy.

Madara stared.

He had touched him.

Hashirama immediately drove his palm toward Hao's chest.

Hao caught it.

The impact forced Hao backward half a step.

Silence followed.

Madara and Hashirama froze.

Hao looked down at the shallow mark his sandal had left in the soil.

Then he looked at them.

A genuine smile slowly appeared on his face.

"Better."

The word sent a chill through both boys.

They had used everything they possessed merely to force him back half a step.

And Hao looked pleased.

Not threatened.

Pleased.

Then Hao disappeared.

Hashirama's instincts screamed.

He raised both arms.

Hao appeared in front of him and struck with an open palm.

Hashirama blocked.

The force detonated.

Boom!

The ground collapsed beneath Hashirama.

A circular crater spread outward, tearing roots from the earth.

Hashirama was launched through three trees before crashing into a boulder.

Stone shattered around him.

Madara attacked Hao from behind.

His kunai aimed for the spine.

Hao turned and caught the blade between two fingers.

Madara tried to pull it free.

It did not move.

Hao flicked the kunai.

The metal snapped.

Madara barely saw Hao's other hand.

A palm stopped one inch from his chest.

The air compressed.

The invisible impact struck him without physical contact.

Madara flew backward.

His body ripped through shrubs and bounced twice across the ground before slamming into the base of an ancient tree.

The trunk cracked from the force.

Madara coughed.

Blood stained his lips.

His vision blurred.

Yet Hao had clearly held back.

Madara understood that immediately.

The attack could have crushed his ribs.

Stopped his heart.

Destroyed everything behind him.

Instead, it had only wounded him enough to prove the difference between them.

Hashirama climbed out of the rubble.

Blood ran down one side of his face.

His chakra surged.

The injuries across his body began healing with abnormal speed.

Hao noticed.

"Remarkable vitality."

Hashirama charged again.

Madara forced himself upright and joined him.

Hao stepped between their attacks.

He struck Hashirama's shoulder.

Blocked Madara's knee.

Turned beneath Hashirama's elbow.

Redirected Madara's kunai.

Every counter was precise.

A strike to the wrist.

A tap against the ribs.

A push beneath the chin.

A kick behind the knee.

Hashirama and Madara were thrown across the clearing again and again.

They rose each time.

Their clothes tore.

Their skin bruised.

Blood marked the soil.

Trees collapsed beneath their bodies.

Stone formations shattered.

The once-peaceful clearing became a battlefield.

Cracks spread across the earth.

Small fires burned where Madara's jutsu had struck.

Dust and broken leaves filled the air.

Yet Hao remained untouched.

His breathing had not changed.

His white robe bore no dirt.

His expression remained calm.

The difference was absolute.

Hashirama lunged.

Hao caught his fist and threw him over his shoulder.

Madara tried to intercept.

Hao ducked and drove one finger into the center of Madara's chest.

A pulse of Furyoku entered his body.

Madara froze.

Not from pain.

Something had touched him beneath the flesh.

Beneath the chakra network.

Something had reached his soul.

His Sharingan widened.

Hao released him.

Madara stumbled backward, clutching his chest.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing harmful."

Hao looked at both boys.

"I only wanted to confirm something."

Hashirama moved beside Madara.

"What?"

Hao's golden eyes gleamed.

"Whether chakra could protect the soul."

The atmosphere changed.

The remaining flames around the clearing bent away from Hao.

The spirits in the forest disappeared from Madara's sight.

Not because they had left.

They had fallen silent.

Every soul lowered its head.

Hao released his Furyoku.

There was no explosion at first.

No flash.

No wind.

Only pressure.

It descended upon the clearing like an invisible ocean.

Hashirama's knees almost buckled.

Madara's breath stopped.

The ground beneath Hao cracked.

Then the pressure expanded.

Boom!

A ring of force erupted from his body.

The nearest trees were ripped from the earth.

Boulders split down the middle.

The flames scattered.

The clearing sank several inches as the soil compressed beneath the weight of Hao's spiritual presence.

Hashirama and Madara crossed their arms in front of their faces.

Their chakra surged instinctively.

It wrapped around their bodies.

Strengthened their muscles.

Protected their organs.

But Hao's aura did not attack their bodies.

It passed through chakra.

Through flesh.

Through bone.

It touched the deepest part of their existence.

Their souls.

Hashirama's eyes widened.

He had faced killers before.

Adults whose hands were stained with the blood of children.

He had felt killing intent sharp enough to freeze weaker warriors.

This was different.

There was no hatred in Hao's aura.

No desire to harm them.

That made it worse.

His soul recognized Hao before his mind could understand him.

An ancient instinct buried beneath thought and blood screamed a single command.

Bow.

Hashirama's legs trembled.

His heart pounded against his ribs.

The forest that had felt peaceful moments earlier now seemed impossibly vast.

Every tree leaned away from Hao.

Every creature had fled.

Even the earth appeared to submit beneath his feet.

Hashirama clenched his jaw.

"Why..."

His voice barely escaped.

"Why am I afraid?"

Hao looked at him calmly.

"Because your body does not understand me."

Hashirama struggled to remain standing.

"But your soul does."

Madara was suffering even more.

His Sharingan spun violently.

The world around Hao distorted.

The young Uchiha could once again see the spirits.

Not hundreds.

Not thousands.

An endless multitude.

They filled the forest.

They covered the sky.

Warriors, children, beasts, shamans and ancient beings stood in silent reverence.

Behind them rose something incomprehensibly vast.

A sea of souls.

A presence without beginning or end.

For one terrible instant, Madara felt as though Hao was not a single human being.

He was a doorway.

And beyond that doorway waited every soul that had ever existed.

Madara's own soul recoiled.

His hands trembled.

Cold sweat covered his back.

He tried to raise his kunai.

His fingers refused to close.

This was not fear learned through battle.

It was older.

Deeper.

The fear of prey before a natural ruler.

The fear of a mortal soul standing before the one chosen by the Great Spirit.

Madara bit his tongue until blood filled his mouth.

The pain allowed him to move one foot.

Then another.

He forced himself between Hao and Hashirama.

Hashirama stared at him.

"Madara..."

"Don't misunderstand."

Madara's voice shook despite his attempt to control it.

"I'm not protecting you."

Even under that crushing pressure, Hashirama almost smiled.

"Of course not."

Hao watched them.

Their bodies were near their limits.

Their chakra pathways strained under the pressure.

Their souls were terrified.

Yet neither fled.

Madara stood in front of Hashirama.

Hashirama reached out and placed one hand on Madara's shoulder.

They supported one another without speaking.

Something shifted.

Hao listened for their thoughts.

Nothing.

His eyes narrowed.

Until now, their minds had been clear to him.

Madara's suspicion.

Hashirama's concern.

Their strategies.

Their fear.

But in this moment...

Silence.

Not emptiness.

Resistance.

The ancient spiritual presences within them had awakened.

The souls behind Hashirama and Madara became clearer.

One warm and overflowing with life.

The other proud and sharp enough to challenge heaven.

Their minds were no longer exposed.

Something within them had closed the path.

For the first time since entering this world...

Hao could not read the thoughts of the humans standing before him.

The realization should have irritated him.

Instead...

His smile widened.

A real smile.

Not mockery.

Not detached amusement.

Delight.

"Interesting."

Hashirama and Madara stared at him through the spiritual pressure.

Hao slowly reduced his aura.

The crushing weight vanished.

Both boys nearly collapsed.

They remained upright only by leaning against one another.

Their breathing was ragged.

Their bodies were bruised and bleeding.

The clearing around them had been devastated.

Trees lay uprooted across the ground.

Several boulders had shattered.

A crater surrounded Hao.

The earth was blackened by fire and carved apart by the force of their battle.

Yet Hao stood at its center without a single wound.

He looked at the two boys differently now.

Before, they had merely been unusual humans carrying powerful chakra.

Then they became subjects worthy of study.

Now...

They were mysteries.

People whose minds he could not freely enter.

People who had resisted the authority of his soul despite feeling genuine terror.

Hao had once believed humans were weak because he could hear everything they concealed.

Their greed.

Their hatred.

Their lies.

Every ugly thought had been laid bare before him.

There had been no mystery in humanity.

Nothing worth trusting.

But these two boys had created silence.

For the first time, Hao stood before humans whose hearts he could not completely understand.

It was a small thing.

Yet it disturbed a belief he had carried for centuries.

Perhaps humans were not always open books.

Perhaps...

Some could still surprise him.

Hashirama struggled to straighten his back.

"You..."

He coughed and wiped blood from his mouth.

"You really are strong."

Despite everything, a weak grin appeared on his face.

Madara glared at Hao.

"That's your response?"

Hashirama glanced at him.

"What else should I say?"

"Call him a monster."

"That would be rude."

"He used us as training targets."

Hashirama looked at the ruined clearing.

"That's true."

Hao almost laughed.

Madara noticed the change in his expression.

"What are you smiling about?"

"You."

Madara stiffened.

"And him."

Hao looked toward Hashirama.

"You were terrified."

Neither boy denied it.

"Your souls understood the difference between us."

Hao's gaze sharpened with interest.

"Yet you continued standing."

His smile became almost dangerous.

"You even managed to hide your thoughts from me."

Hashirama blinked.

"Read our thoughts?"

Madara's face darkened.

"You were inside our minds?"

"Until a moment ago."

Madara forced his exhausted body into a defensive stance.

Hao's smile widened further.

There it was again.

Fear.

Anger.

Defiance.

But no thoughts.

Only silence.

Magnificent.

Hao raised one hand.

A small flame appeared above his palm.

It was not chakra.

The fire burned crimson at first.

Then orange.

Then a deep, almost living red.

The spirits around the clearing began to tremble.

Hashirama felt the air become dry.

Madara's Sharingan fixed upon the flame.

Hao looked beyond the two boys, toward something only he could perceive.

"You've shown me chakra."

The flame expanded.

"And you've shown me that the souls of this world may be more interesting than I expected."

The ground began to glow beneath him.

A vast spiritual symbol spread across the ruined clearing.

Hashirama stepped back.

Madara raised his broken kunai.

Heat rolled outward in waves.

Hao's golden eyes shone within the rising light.

"Next..."

His voice remained calm.

"...I will show you Furyoku."

The flame above his palm erupted toward the sky.

A pillar of crimson fire pierced the clouds.

The entire forest shook.

Within the inferno...

Two enormous eyes slowly opened.

And for the second time that day...

The souls of Hashirama and Madara screamed in fear.
