Accepting Gon's invitation, Law was worried about whether he'd be chased out by Mito wielding a broom.
This concern of his didn't come true when they arrived at Gon's house. As for why...
When Mito opened the door and saw Law standing next to Gon, she froze for a moment before silently turning back into the house. A short while later, what she held in her hand wasn't a broom… it was a kitchen knife.
"Aunt Mito!"
Seeing this, Gon's eyes widened in shock, turning perfectly round and white.
"Hey, don't do anything reckless."
Law watched as Mito charged straight at him with the knife. Though he had countless ways to subdue her, his only option was to retreat.
"You-"
Mito's gaze was hostile, as if she had something to say. But seeing Gon present, she swallowed her words and took several aggressive steps forward, raising the knife threateningly.
She wanted to ask Law what his relationship with Ging was, but she didn't want Gon to hear. Her slashing motion was more of a warning than an actual attack.
Law took a few steps back, looking at the furious Mito, and said "Let me tell you, acting like this will make it hard for you to get married in the future."
"What did you say?!" A visible vein popped on Mito's forehead.
"Women are more likable when they're gentle and kind." Law continued, unafraid of provoking her further.
Mito's eyes narrowed instantly, a flash of killing intent passing through them.
For Gon's sake, she had no plans to marry in the near future and didn't particularly care about such matters. But that didn't mean she liked being reminded of it.
Just then, a gentle, elderly voice came from inside the house.
"Mito, that's enough."
Bertha appeared at the doorway, eyeing the kitchen knife in Mito's hand with disapproval, "Put that down right now. What kind of behavior is this?"
Mito pressed her lips together, stamped her foot lightly, and put the knife away before heading back into the kitchen to prepare dinner, her expression sullen.
With Bertha's timely intervention, Gon let out a sigh of relief.
A few days ago, he had naively believed Mito wouldn't actually chase Law with a knife. Reality proved otherwise.
"Sorry about that."
After calming Mito down, Bertha gave Law an apologetic smile.
"It's okay, it's okay." Law waved his hand.
"Come in and sit down." Bertha invited.
Law glanced at Gon and nodded.
The three of them entered the house and went straight to the dining room.
The interior was cluttered with modern appliances, like a fridge, TV, and other necessities, making the space feel a bit cramped.
The dining area and kitchen were practically one, separated only by a counter.
Mito was busy cooking in the kitchen. When she noticed Law, she glared at him.
Law responded by blinking at her, causing Mito to accidentally slice a green pepper crookedly on the cutting board.
"Have a seat."
Bertha smiled warmly as she gestured for Law to sit.
Without hesitation, Law pulled out a chair and sat down, while Bertha went to prepare tea in the kitchen.
Gon sat beside Law and leaned in, whispering, "Boss Law, Aunt Mito isn't usually like this. Please bear with her."
Hearing this, Law was momentarily stunned, 'Those words didn't sound like something a six-year-old would say. Then again, if I remembered correctly, Gon had mastered smooth flirting skills from a young age due to his environment.'
'In a way, he was quite mature for his age.'
A short while later, Bertha returned with hot tea.
"Thank you." Law accepted the cup gratefully.
After introductions, they all learned each other's names.
Gon excitedly recounted their adventures over the past few days, his face beaming with joy.
Bertha listened quietly, her heart warmed by Gon's happiness. Meanwhile, Mito in the kitchen, though busy preparing dinner, kept her ears open, not missing a single word of Gon's stories.
After a while, Gon finally finished, reluctantly ending his tale. The thought that Law might leave a few days later made him a little sad.
Still a child, he couldn't hide his emotions, and his feelings were clearly written on his face.
Law noticed Gon's sadness and immediately thought of Killua.
From the start, Law had only wanted to interact with a young Killua and Gon… and if possible, meet the young Kurapika too. As for Leorio… he could pass.
Gon, Killua, and Kurapika were three characters Law had adored in his past life. Now, they were living, breathing people.
Interacting was one thing, but Law didn't want the two kids to grow overly dependent on him.
"Stay for dinner tonight." Bertha said, turning to Law with an invitation.
"Sure, thanks for having me." Law didn't decline and accepted directly.
Hearing this, Bertha smiled warmly, "The dishes you've had Gon bring back these past few days were quite unique… and delicious. I've never tasted anything like them before."
"You're too kind. If you like them, I can go into the mountains tomorrow to find some more good ingredients. I'm pretty confident in my cooking skills." Law replied humbly.
Bertha was about to politely refuse when Gon suddenly cut in, "Grandma, say yes! Boss Law is leaving Whale Island in a couple of days. Who knows when we'll get to eat his cooking again."
"Gon, what did you just call him?"
From the kitchen, Mito whipped her head around, her sharp gaze locking onto them.
"Uh…" Gon immediately shrank back.
Seeing his reaction, Mito turned her glare to Law, who blinked at her again.
"Mito." Bertha chided, looking at her.
"Hmph."
Under Grandma's stern gaze, Mito snorted and went back to preparing dinner.
Bertha cast an apologetic look at Law again and said, "Are you in a hurry to leave, Law?"
Seeing how happy Gon had been today, Grandma secretly hoped Law could stay longer… that way, he could keep Gon company for a while.
"There are some things I need to take care of." Law nodded.
Since he planned to head to the Dark Continent soon, he needed to settle the matter of a ship.
He intended to go to Spice City to find Ellie and see if her shipyard could build him a custom vessel.
Bertha expressed regret but handed over dinner duties for the next two days to Law.
Law readily agreed to the request.
Later, while waiting for Mito to finish dinner, Law casually mentioned the unique spices used by the locals in the Amaromi Forest. From there, the conversation shifted to the many places he had visited over the years and some of the strange things he'd encountered.
He didn't exaggerate his words, and even when describing the deadly threats hidden in nature, he spoke calmly.
Gon was completely enthralled, and even Bertha, who had lived most of her life, listened intently. Without realizing it, Mito's dinner preparations slowed down as well.
The three of them had spent most of their lives on Whale Island, rarely venturing outside. It was no surprise they were drawn to Law's stories of his travels.
Mito gradually stopped chopping, her expression growing complicated as she thought of Ging.
Time passed, and the aroma of dinner began wafting from the kitchen… Mito must have been nearly done.
"Boss Law, can you stay tonight? I want to hear more about your adventures!" Gon pleaded, eyes shining with excitement.
"Uh…" Law hesitated, unsure whether to agree or refuse.
He had expected Mito to outright reject Gon's request, but surprisingly, she remained silent.
Bertha glanced at Mito, puzzled by her unusually hostile attitude toward Law.
Then, looking at Gon's hopeful face and Law's conflicted expression, she said, "Since Gon wants you to stay so badly, if you don't mind, you're welcome to spend the night."
"Yeah, yeah!" Gon nodded vigorously.
"Alright," Law reluctantly agreed… mostly because Mito hadn't objected this time.
'Ging… Ging, you really are the most unreliable guy.'
In his past life, Law had been free of attachments, which was why he could explore without hesitation. But Ging was different.
"That's great!"
Thrilled that Law had agreed, Gon jumped up in excitement.
