We made it safely back to the walls. Most of our forces had finally calmed down because we had given them much-needed breathing room by taking care of those Carrionstars. Now, all that was left was to protect the barrier long enough for it to slowly but surely repair itself. Such was part of the automated capabilities of the ancient echoes placed within the nation to maintain the defensive barrier in the first place.
Looking around me, I didn't want to gloss over the bitter reality that many lives were lost and counting. But this was the nature of war, the nature of conflict, the nature of life itself. In trying to push back a great force, no, a colossal calamity, there were bound to be sacrifices.
"What do you think, kid? Think we'll be able to handle things from here?" Mr. Blackwell asked, beckoning me over while leaning casually against the stone battlement.
