Chapter 505: Belgium's Interests
The inspection concluded, General Evis left Antwerp Airfield visibly unsettled. He'd arrived confident, intending to assert British control, yet departed feeling as if he'd suffered a quiet, strategic defeat.
Charles watched from the headquarters window as the British general's convoy disappeared into the distance. Beside him, Tijani shook his head slightly, amused yet wary. "They clearly underestimated our relationship with Belgium."
"Indeed," Charles replied softly. "They've overlooked Belgium's determination to control its own destiny. Albert won't easily surrender his country's fate to foreign commanders."
Behind them, King Albert quietly entered the room, smiling as he observed the two French generals. "I trust General Evis understands the situation more clearly now?"
Charles turned, saluting briefly. "Thanks to your intervention, I believe he does. But we must expect further attempts from the British to assert their authority here."
Albert nodded calmly, pouring himself a small cup of coffee from a nearby tray. "I'm fully aware, General Charles. The British have never truly accepted that Belgium isn't merely an extension of their strategic plans. However, your presence has profoundly altered the balance."
Charles raised an eyebrow, genuinely curious. "How so, Your Majesty?"
Albert leaned casually against a chair, sipping his coffee thoughtfully. "Before you came, Belgium was viewed as little more than a battlefield, valuable primarily for its location. The British—and even the French to an extent—considered us disposable, useful only insofar as our troops slowed the Germans down."
He paused briefly, eyes distant, recalling painful memories. "But your rapid victory at Antwerp changed everything. You demonstrated Belgium isn't merely terrain to be contested but rather a valuable ally with its own voice. You showed the world that our cooperation can alter the course of the war."
Charles listened intently, understanding the deeper significance of Albert's words. "But surely the British realize that as well?"
Albert laughed softly, shaking his head. "They're slow to adapt, General. For centuries, they've relied on naval dominance and colonial troops, rarely considering smaller nations as true partners. Now, with you commanding such revolutionary tactics, they find their dominance threatened."
Tijani interjected, thoughtful. "So, the British assigning General Evis here isn't merely a tactical decision. It's a political maneuver aimed at weakening General Charles's influence."
Albert nodded approvingly. "Precisely. They want to keep Belgium firmly under their control. Supporting your successes—especially publicly—would strengthen our position, something they're deeply wary of."
Charles folded his arms, reflecting quietly. "Then we must anticipate resistance—not from our German enemies but from our own allies."
Albert smiled grimly. "Exactly. Belgium's independence and prosperity depend heavily on our ability to support you fully. To that end, I've decided to accelerate our collaboration significantly."
Charles raised his eyebrows, intrigued. "Accelerate?"
Albert gestured firmly. "Yes. Our recent partnership between FN Herstal and Saint-Étienne was just a start. Now I intend to push even further, fully integrating our military production with your strategies. I want Belgium to be the foremost military partner of France, particularly your personal initiatives."
Charles was genuinely impressed by Albert's resolve. "This is a bold step, Your Majesty."
Albert shrugged lightly, eyes sharp. "It's also our best chance at real independence. Relying solely on the British would eventually reduce Belgium to a mere satellite state. But by closely aligning with you, we secure our place as equal partners."
Charles considered this deeply. He saw clearly Albert's intent: tying Belgium's fortunes directly to his own would strengthen both sides immensely. But it also meant significantly more responsibility. Any failure of his tactics could undermine not only his reputation but Belgium's national interests as well.
Albert sensed Charles's hesitation and smiled reassuringly. "Don't underestimate your influence, General. Belgium needs your vision. This war won't be won by old tactics, but by innovation. Your strategies are the future."
Charles felt a momentary burden lifted, hearing Albert's clear trust. "Then I'll do everything I can to ensure we both succeed."
Albert reached forward, shaking Charles's hand firmly. "I have no doubts. We'll fight alongside you—not just today, but as long as necessary."
At this point, Eden stepped into the room. He'd been outside coordinating the details of the newly formed Belgian units intended to collaborate closely with Charles's forces. "Your Majesty, General Charles, the enrollment for the new Special Reconnaissance Corps has surpassed our expectations. Tens of thousands have volunteered, eager to join your ranks."
Albert turned to Charles with satisfaction. "You see? The Belgian people already consider your cause their own."
Charles smiled, genuinely moved. "I promise to honor their trust."
Albert nodded solemnly. "I know you will. But there's one more detail I'd like to finalize immediately. I'd like your personal involvement in training and structuring these new Belgian units."
Charles considered carefully. Such direct involvement would further deepen his commitment and influence within Belgium, potentially straining relations with his French counterparts, especially the new command under Nivelle. Yet, the strategic advantage was undeniable.
After a moment, Charles nodded decisively. "Agreed. Tijani can oversee initial coordination, and I'll review the training personally whenever possible. Our tactics must integrate seamlessly if we hope to be effective."
Albert smiled broadly, clearly pleased. "Excellent. I'll ensure every resource is at your disposal."
Before Charles could respond, a message was handed urgently to Tijani by a communications officer. Tijani quickly scanned it, his face growing concerned.
"Something wrong?" Charles asked quietly.
Tijani handed him the paper, frowning deeply. "It seems General Evis has already lodged a formal protest to Nivelle, accusing us of refusing to cooperate fully with British command."
Albert's expression darkened immediately. "Unbelievable. They've wasted no time."
Charles, however, remained calm. "This was expected. The British are predictable. Nivelle's reaction will determine our next steps."
Albert watched Charles closely, impressed by his composure. "You're not concerned?"
Charles shook his head lightly. "Nivelle will hesitate. He relies on British support, but openly antagonizing us would cost him dearly in French public opinion. He'll try a middle road, pressuring us quietly."
Albert leaned back thoughtfully. "Then we must respond clearly. Belgium supports you fully. I'll issue a statement tomorrow emphasizing our trust and cooperation with your command."
Charles nodded gratefully. "That would help greatly, Your Majesty."
Albert stood, preparing to depart, then turned once more, his voice firm and determined. "General Charles, remember that from now on, Belgium's interests are your interests, and your battles are ours. No matter what comes, Belgium stands with you."
Charles felt the profound weight of these words. He understood perfectly now: His struggle was no longer merely about defeating Germany. It was also about ensuring the survival and independence of an entire nation. A daunting responsibility, yet also an unparalleled opportunity.
After Albert left, Tijani turned cautiously to Charles. "This changes everything. Are you prepared for the consequences?"
Charles's eyes shone resolutely. "Yes. If the British or Nivelle want to challenge us, let them. With Belgium firmly by our side, we're stronger than ever."
Outside, the skies above Antwerp remained clear, but in the distance, storm clouds were gathering. Not over the battlefield, but in the political corridors of Paris and London—places where the real battles of this war would increasingly unfold.
