The city lights of New York flickered below as the team returned to Stark Tower, but the glow of neon signs couldn't shake the tension lingering in Gwen Stacy's chest. They filed into the living room, each settling into their usual spots, but Gwen's mind was still back in Dr. Octavia "Vee" Octavius' chaotic lab, standing next to that humming reactor.
She flopped onto the couch with a dramatic groan, her head resting on the back cushion as she stared at the ceiling. "I don't know, guys. That didn't feel… safe."
Wanda settled beside her, crossing her legs elegantly and sipping from her favorite mug—black coffee with just a dash of chaos. Her gaze was calm but thoughtful. "Science rarely is. But there's a difference between taking risks and flirting with disaster."
Jean chuckled from across the room, grabbing a nearby pillow and tossing it lightly at Gwen's face. "Come on, Gwen. You've faced worse. A fusion reactor blowing up would just be Tuesday for us."
Gwen peeled the pillow off her face, sighing. "I don't know… Vee's brilliant, but the way she dismissed the risks? That's not just confidence. That's obsession."
Storm stretched her arms above her head, smirking. "Honestly, I'd be more worried if she wasn't a little obsessed. I mean, who doesn't want their fusion experiments led by someone teetering on the edge of sanity?"
Talia gave a knowing nod, leaning back in her chair like a queen on her throne. "At least she's not trying to take over the world. Yet."
Natasha raised an eyebrow, her tone as dry as ever. "Give it time."
The room erupted into laughter, the kind that only came from knowing you were probably making jokes about something that would actually happen later. But Gwen couldn't shake the knot in her chest. Beneath the humor, the tension was still there, creeping like a shadow under their words.
As the laughter started dying down, Jean leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand. "But seriously… who names their experiment 'limitless power' and then laughs when someone asks about safety?"
Storm smirked. "Classic scientist energy. 'Oh, this machine could destroy a city block—guess we'll just turn it on and see.'"
Talia raised her hand like a student in class. "What's the betting pool? First explosion within a week?"
Wanda grinned. "Oh, you're thinking small. I'm saying catastrophic meltdown—within seventy-two hours."
Natasha clicked her tongue, her eyes narrowing. "I'm saying we all wake up, and suddenly there's a sun in the middle of Central Park."
Peter, who had been unusually quiet, blinked. "Uh… you guys are joking… right?"
The entire room turned to stare at him.
"…Right?" he repeated, his voice slightly higher.
Jean patted his shoulder sympathetically. "Welcome to our life, Parker."
As the teasing subsided, Wanda's eyes gleamed with a different kind of intensity. She leaned in closer to Gwen, her voice dropping just enough that it was meant more for her than the others.
"You know…" Wanda began, her fingers idly tracing the rim of her mug, "that kind of energy could be… useful. For Sokovia."
Gwen's eyebrows shot up. "You're not serious."
Wanda's lips curled into that familiar mischievous smile—the one that usually preceded either a brilliant plan or absolute chaos. Sometimes both. "Why not? Imagine what we could do with that kind of power. Clean energy, limitless potential. Vee's dangerous, yes—but if we can guide her, maybe she's exactly what we need."
Gwen bit her lip, her thoughts spiraling. She understood Wanda's vision—Sokovia had been left vulnerable for so long. Wanda wanted to protect her country, build it into something that could stand against anyone.
But there was a fine line between power and destruction.
"You really think we can control her?" Gwen asked quietly.
Wanda leaned back, her smirk softening into something more sincere. "I think we can give her a better purpose."
The next morning, Gwen and Wanda sat side by side in front of Wanda's laptop, their eyes scanning endless files. They dug into Vee's research, searching for patterns, looking beyond the science. They needed to know what kind of forces were surrounding this project—because, in their world, brilliance always attracted vultures.
"Look at this," Gwen murmured, pointing at the screen. "Funding records. Private investor. No name attached. Just… encrypted accounts."
Wanda frowned. "That's never good."
As if summoned by the tension, Natasha strolled into the room, holding a protein bar like it was a weapon.
"You know who uses accounts like that?" she asked, her voice calm but sharp. "Arms dealers. Crime lords."
Gwen's stomach dropped. "You think someone's trying to weaponize her research?"
Natasha gave a small shrug. "I don't think. I know. You don't funnel that kind of money into fusion energy just for the good of mankind."
Wanda's expression darkened. Her Sokovian pride burned alongside her protective instincts. "If they're after Vee, then they're after her work. And if that work is finished… we might not be the ones deciding how it gets used."
Gwen closed the laptop with a click. The tension in the room was thicker than before.
Later that evening, Gwen stood on the balcony of Stark Tower, the city sprawling out beneath her like a living, breathing machine. The wind was cool, carrying with it the sounds of distant traffic and laughter from the streets below.
Wanda joined her, slipping an arm around her waist. They stood together in silence for a moment, the weight of everything hanging between them.
"Whatever happens," Wanda whispered, her voice softer now, stripped of the bravado she often carried, "we'll face it together."
Gwen leaned into her warmth, feeling the steadiness in Wanda's touch. She smiled, but deep down, her chest still felt tight. Because she knew this was just the beginning. Vee's ambition, her backers hidden influence, and Sokovia's future—they were all pieces of a puzzle Gwen was only beginning to understand.
