In the fog, a sharp metallic booming rang out. The sixty power cars of the Doomsday Train parked on the wilderness tracks roared to life, iron wheels screeching as they turned. The Horizon Gate locked onto the rails and spat blue sparks, thousands of couplings crackling with the brittle snap of metal joints. This slumbering mechanical dragon began to crawl forward under the lash of electricity.
Inside the various cars that were like miniature societies, people stared out at the fog, their faces reflecting all the different states of human life.
Up in the sky, the suspended Silent City was likewise moving through the fog. All flight attitudes and the array of the Air Fleet were controlled entirely through dense signal relays. Whether survivors or soldiers of the Iron Guard Brigade, everyone looking out saw only blacked‑out nothingness.
It was almost the same as moving forward in a submarine.
