When Sian said he was going to train Xiao Zhu, he hadn't been joking.
But neither had he intended to throw the child into real danger on his very first day.
He wasn't cruel enough to force a ten-year-old to face powerful mutated monsters before he had even learned how to hold a weapon properly.
Training had to be gradual.
Otherwise...
It wasn't training.
It was sending someone to die.
After he and the others finished clearing the zombies and the few weak mutated creatures wandering around the house, Sian selected a single zombie whose body had already been crippled.
Its legs were broken.
One arm hung uselessly from its shoulder.
Its jaw had been shattered so badly that it could only produce distorted, guttural growls.
The creature could barely crawl across the ground.
Sian dragged it in front of Kira before calmly saying,
"Watch the child."
"Make sure he finishes it himself."
"Only bring him back inside after he's dealt the killing blow."
Kira nodded immediately.
