The morning was a white blur of frost and silence. Snow clung to Victor's boots like hungry spirits, and the air felt like knives scraping the inside of his throat. His breath came out in short, ragged bursts, curling into ghostly vapors that disappeared before his eyes.
He had been following the mother beast for nearly half a day. The enormous serpentine creature moved with an otherworldly grace, her glacial scales catching every flicker of dim sunlight like diamonds beneath a sheet of ice. Each slow undulation of her body left behind deep furrows in the snow — tracks so massive they looked like trenches carved by ancient giants.
