Marina stopped at the door, while I stayed hidden, pressed into the shadows near the column, my heartbeat loud enough that I was sure it would betray me.
From here, I could see everything through the narrow stretch of hallway the dim lights allowed.
Marina lifted a hand and paused—not to knock.
To look. The tall glass vase near Romeo's door caught her reflection, warped slightly by the curve of the glass.
She leaned closer, studying herself with practiced precision.
She adjusted the strap of her nightdress, pushing her boobs to be more exposed, smoothed her hair and tilted her chin.
She checked her mouth, shifting her expression to be bright and flirtousus. Like whatever waited on the other side of that door was something she expected to claim.
She reached for the handle and the door opened without resistance.
That alone sent a strange chill through me.
