Chapter 7 — The First AssessmentMorning came slowly to Eryndor Royal Academy.
But the academy itself did not feel rested.
Mana barriers still flickered faintly across the sky like cracked glass trying to hold itself together.
And somewhere beneath the surface—
something continued to pulse.
Zeal stood in the center of the dorm courtyard.
Surrounded.
Not physically.
But structurally.
Every student passing by him slowed slightly.
Some stared.
Some whispered.
Some avoided him completely.
Class-0 Observation Status.
The student who broke the Judgment Stone.
The boy the system could not read.
Kyle yawned loudly beside him.
"This is getting depressing," he said. "Even breakfast felt like I was being watched."
Zeal replied calmly.
"You are being watched."
Kyle blinked.
"…That didn't help."
A voice interrupted them.
"Correct."
Chloe Ashfield approached from the side path.
Smoke curled gently behind her like a shadow refusing to leave her.
Her eyes were sharp today.
Focused.
Not on Zeal's face.
But something deeper.
"You're under continuous surveillance," she said. "Not just from instructors."
Kyle tilted his head.
"…Meaning?"
Chloe didn't look at him.
"Something inside the academy is also watching him."
Zeal's expression didn't change.
But inside—
the black pulse responded slightly.
THUMP.
He noticed it too.
Lucius Lockwood appeared shortly after.
Lightning flickered once in the air above him, reacting instinctively to his presence.
He stopped a few steps away.
"You're late," Lucius said.
Kyle raised a hand.
"To what exactly?"
Lucius answered simply.
"The First Assessment."
Silence.
Zeal looked at him.
"…Assessment?"
Lucius nodded once.
"All first-years are tested for combat classification."
Chloe added quietly.
"Real combat. Not stone readings."
Kyle sighed.
"Of course it's combat. Because nothing in this academy is normal."
A bell echoed across the academy grounds.
BOOM—BOOM—BOOM
Three deep tones.
The entire courtyard shifted instantly.
Students began moving toward the central arena.
Zeal followed.
Not because he wanted to.
But because he had no choice.
🏟️ THE ARENA OF ERYNDORThe central arena was massive.
Circular stone platform surrounded by floating observation seats.
Mana barriers surrounded the entire structure.
Instructor Vael stood at the center.
Beside him were several higher-ranking academy officials.
And behind them—
a strange device.
A floating crystal core wrapped in rotating runic rings.
Kyle leaned toward Zeal.
"…That thing looks like it wants to eat us."
Zeal didn't respond.
Because he could feel it again.
That pressure.
Not from the arena.
From below it.
Vael spoke loudly.
"First-Year Assessment begins."
Silence fell instantly.
"This test is not about ranking."
A pause.
"It is about survival under controlled combat pressure."
Chloe narrowed her eyes slightly.
Lucius stepped forward just a little.
Zeal remained still.
Vael continued.
"You will be placed in simulated combat conditions using Rift Echo projections."
Kyle blinked.
"…Rift Echo?"
A nearby instructor answered.
"Residual entities reconstructed from Rift energy patterns."
Kyle whispered.
"So… fake monsters?"
Zeal spoke quietly.
"Not fake."
Kyle looked at him.
Zeal continued.
"They remember."
Silence.
That statement wasn't explained further.
Because Vael raised his hand.
"Begin."
The arena floor lit up instantly.
Runes activated.
The floating crystal core pulsed once.
And reality shifted.
🌑 SIMULATION FIELD: ACTIVEThe world changed.
Stone arena became a ruined battlefield.
Skies turned dark.
Broken towers surrounded them.
Wind carried ash instead of air.
Kyle looked around.
"…Okay, that's new."
Chloe immediately analyzed the environment.
"Spatial reconstruction. High realism."
Lucius raised his hand slightly.
Lightning formed.
"Good. It reacts to combat intent."
Zeal looked down.
The ground beneath him was not real stone.
But it felt real.
And something beneath it—
was moving.
A roar echoed across the battlefield.
Not one.
Many.
Figures began forming in the distance.
Shadow-like creatures.
Distorted.
Incomplete.
Rift Echoes.
Kyle exhaled.
"…Yeah, I officially hate school."
Vael's voice echoed from above.
"Survive ten minutes."
A pause.
"Begin."
⚔️ FIRST CONTACTThe Echoes moved first.
Fast.
Unnatural.
Kyle reacted instantly.
"Wind Step!"
A burst of air propelled him backward as a clawed Echo struck where he stood.
Chloe exhaled slowly.
"Smoke Domain."
Black smoke spread across the battlefield, distorting visibility instantly.
Lucius didn't move.
He waited.
Then—
lightning exploded.
BOOM.
One Echo disintegrated instantly.
Zeal, however, did not move.
Because he felt something different.
Not danger.
Recognition.
The Echoes weren't just attacking randomly.
They were reacting to him.
Specifically.
One turned its head toward him.
Paused.
Then spoke.
"Prototype detected."
Zeal's eyes narrowed.
"…You too?"
The Echo lunged.
Zeal moved.
Not fast.
Not flashy.
Instinct.
His arm shifted slightly.
Black cracks formed across his skin.
Claw formed.
He struck.
BOOM.
The Echo was thrown back.
But instead of dissipating—
it paused.
Reformed.
Kyle shouted.
"Zeal! They don't stay down like normal targets!"
Zeal already knew.
These weren't normal Echoes.
They were fragments.
Just like the Rift entity.
All connected.
All reacting to him.
Chloe's voice cut through smoke.
"Something is anchoring them to you!"
Lucius narrowed his eyes.
"…So it's not the simulation."
A pause.
"It's you."
Silence.
Zeal looked down at his hand.
The black markings were faint again.
But present.
Alive.
The Echoes began shifting direction.
All of them.
Turning toward Zeal.
Kyle's expression changed.
"…That's not good."
Vael's voice echoed from above.
"Target anomaly detected."
Zeal exhaled slowly.
"…Of course it is."
Then—
the Echoes moved.
All at once.
🐉 AWAKENING FRACTUREZeal stepped back.
For the first time—
his instincts screamed.
Not fear.
Pressure.
Something inside him responding violently.
THUMP.
The black pulse inside him surged.
His vision flickered.
For a fraction of a second—
he saw it.
The dragon eye beneath the academy.
Open.
Watching.
Smiling.
Zeal snapped back.
And his body reacted.
Scales spread.
Not fully.
Partial transformation.
His arm became heavier.
Stronger.
Kyle froze.
"…Okay that's new."
Chloe's smoke tightened.
Lucius' lightning stopped moving for half a second.
Zeal moved.
This time faster.
He struck through three Echoes in a single motion.
BOOM—BOOM—BOOM.
But they reformed again.
Endless.
Vael's voice changed slightly.
"…Interesting."
Zeal looked up slightly.
And for the first time—
he understood.
This wasn't a test.
It was a trigger.
Something was trying to force his power to surface.
Something inside the academy.
Something below it.
The Echoes lunged again.
Zeal clenched his fist.
And the black pulse inside him answered louder than before.
