At the west gate of the town, on the rocky hill the mist covered the whole place completely.
Up in the vast sky, numbers of flying creatures were falling down as they tried to fight back desperately.
Something lunged towards them from deep within the cold mist, passed through—taking the very life out of them.
Mist swirled, taking a humanoid shape. A woman with pearl white hair emerged from it.
With a flick of her wrist, various long spears shot forward aiming for the enemy before. While the flying enemy threw the threads of fine silver silk towards her.
The spears plunged into their bodies as many of them fell down helplessly.
The woman dodged most of the sharp threads but there were too many of them. One passed through her face, aimed at her throat. However, she shot an arm forward and blocked the assault.
The silk moved in a saw like motion and managed to deliver a fine cut on her wrist before vanishing slowly into nothingness.
The woman groaned with pain, but no blood came out of her wound, only mist.
On the ground August was shrouded in thick mist, and some enemy soldiers had already managed to sneak towards him.
So she was on a time limit here.
"Argh—" August groaned with pain as his endurance was about to wear out.
Not only echoes but the enemy soldiers had already managed to find him. And here he was completely covered by cold chilling mist from all sides—helpless and desperate.
He didn't even know how to fight yet. How was he supposed to defend himself?
Then again with the voices piercing his head, it would've been difficult to defend even if he knew how to fight.
The enemy approached him, their blurry figures landed beside him. Colourful dust falling down from their wings.
Thankfully they didn't attack him directly but seemingly started to do something else. August wasn't in a state to figure that out though.
All he remembered was watching a web of silk threads weaving over him before falling unconscious.
Up in the sky, the woman was finally done taking down most of the enemy soldiers. There was another wave approaching however, it was pretty far away for now.
Without wasting a moment, she waved a hand and the mist quickly dispersed in the surroundings revealing a couple of enemy creatures standing next to a cocoon.
It didn't take a genius to figure out that they intended to take August with them.
However, the situation just got difficult. The cocoon was shining with silver radiance which meant it was made of the same silk threads.
If the threads hadn't hurt August inside yet, if not handled carefully they will.
Not giving her a moment to think the creature lunged at him from the ground.
"Argh.. get away from me," she roared, crushing the rest of them with her intent alone.
Looking at the enemy approaching from afar she gritted her teeth and slowly drifted towards August.
As she touched the cocoon, quickly retracted her hand feeling a sting from it.
Mist poured out of her finger wounds, now she was sure that it was the same silk.
The enemy was approaching with a far greater number. Not to mention August could suffocate to death if not rescued in time from within the cocoon.
The situation was completely out of her hands.
In the rush of a moment a rational thought crossed her mind. Why was she doing this?
Putting her life into risk for the child of a man she hated. The man who took away everything from her, even her own name.
The man who dragged her here to put her into a cage for the rest of her life?
She looked at the cocoon then turned to the enemy numbers that literally covered the horizon.
The town fell into turmoil as they too noticed the threat approaching. The bell of the town square rang loudly alerting everyone.
Back at the west gate, the woman contemplated the situation carefully.
Was it worth risking everything like this?
She can always just step back and let fate do its work.
Fallen deep into the thoughts she suddenly snapped out of it. She felt being slapped by someone and it was none other than herself who had woken her up.
This wasn't the time to doze off.
She made a decision and stood up on her feet.
There was nothing more she could do to help August now. The silk threads were a direct counter to her aspect.
Mist was supposed to be formless but these soldiers belonged to a force whose power rivaled with her own.
There was another soul creature who hadn't yet stepped into her part of the forest but the soldiers signified that the leader was not very far.
At least this place has managed to grab their attention.
So, she could not free August from the suffocating cage.
Taking a last glance at the cocoon she took some steps towards the rocky cliff and faced the incoming enemy with determination.
Indeed, this was her decision. She was going to fight.
There was something about this human boy that she decided against abandoning him.
The enemy drew closer and lines of them rushed towards her from the sky above.
The woman lifted herself off the ground, mist swirling in her wake. Long sharp spears taking form within the mist.
The enemy marched forward and the spears shot towards them, in the bright sunlight this sight looked like a scenario from a historical battle.
The enemy lost a decent number but they had the weapon too. Threads of fine silk approached the woman in the mist and delivered countless wounds all over her body.
Corpses over corpses fell down as the aerial battlefield fell into complete chaos.
The numbers started to finally overwhelm her as she was getting backed into a corner.
The sky was completely blocked off from her sight as she got swarmed completely by the enemy.
She flailed like a drowning soul, clinging to life.
But she knew more than anyone that if the end looks like something—this was definitely it.
However, she wasn't regretting her decision but carried a smile on her beautiful face.
The smiling face of baby August appeared in her memory as she felt prepared for dying.
Her vision went blurry and the cacophony of the battlefield faded into the background.
"Ah… you can't handle anything,"
A familiar masculine voice resounded in her ears as she opened her eyes only to see flames covering her sight.
The realization of heat came afterward as she rushed to save herself from it.
Exhausted, from one corner of her eye she finally saw him as she heaved a sigh of relief.
He was the man she was terrified of but right now felt like a bliss that he showed up, the same man she hated all her life, the one who took away everything from her, even her own name.
The protector of the town , Lord Valerius, was here.
