Xia Yuqing blinked, lifting her head slowly. The maid's face came into focus—round, earnest, with eyes full of concern. It was An Wei, her head maid.
"Empress, you've been sleeping for so long," An Wei said breathlessly, her voice trembling with relief. "We were so worried! Are you hungry? Should I bring you something to eat? Or—should I call for His Majesty? He's been visiting every day—"
"Out."
The single word cut through the air, cold and sharp.
An Wei froze. "E-Empress?"
Xia Yuqing lifted her tear-streaked face, her expression empty but her tone as icy as winter frost. "Get out."
The maid hesitated, confusion flickering in her eyes. "But, Empress—"
"I said get out!" Xia Yuqing's voice rose, louder this time.
An Wei flinched, bowing quickly before hurrying toward the door. "Y-Yes, Your Majesty..."
