Chapter 476 - Goodnight

….

What started as an experimental pitch had become an airtight, emotionally devastating cinematic loop that seamlessly fused the past and present into a single three hour masterwork.

….

Regal dropped back into his chair.

"How do we stage the final act?"

He muttered, tapping the backspace key twice as he weighed the visual dynamics–

"A standard third act blockbuster climax usually builds toward a massive, triumphant punch, but that doesn't work here because if Steve wins through brute force, the soul of the story dies."

He leaned in closer to the monitor, sketching out the beat by beat flow in the screenplay treatment.

"The Helicarriers are in freefall." he murmured. "And the world seems to crumble around them, but Steve has already done his job, swapping the targeting blades and neutralizing the threat, leaving his suit shredded and his body broken as he stands on the precipice of the collapsing bay."

Regal paused, his eyes narrowing as he questioned the dramatic turn.

"Does he raise his guard? No, that's the mistake. He has to completely abandon violence and drop the shield."

He typed the action block rapidly:

Steve lets the circular vibranium shield slip from his fingers.

It clatters loudly against the grated deck and tumbles through the shattered bay into the Potomac River below.

"He stands defenceless." Regal said softly, hearing the dialogue in his mind. "Looks straight into the eyes of a brainwashed phantom who doesn't even know his own name. 'I am not gonna fight you. You're my friend.'"

He tapped his chin, testing the opposition's reaction.

"...and Bucky can't just stop immediately, because that would feel unearned. Fifty years of cold-blooded Soviet conditioning and Hydra brainwashing don't simply vanish because of a kind word, so the programming takes over as Bucky tackles Steve to the deck, his titanium fist slamming into Steve's jaw again and again in an attempt to silence the ghost standing before him."

Regal's hands hovered over the home row as he framed the climactic symmetry.

"Steve stays down, bleeding and barely able to keep his swollen eyes open through the smoke, but instead of defending himself, he delivers the counterblow to Hydra's brainwashing not with a fist, but with a promise."

His fingers flew across the keys, locking in the line:

STEVE: "Then finish it. 'Cause I am with you till the end of the line."

Regal stopped typing, a faint, breathless quiet settling over the room.

"This works, right?" he murmured to himself, a slow smile spreading across his face. "Because seventy minutes earlier, the audience can go back to Sarah Rogers' apartment in 1942, where a young Bucky wraps his coat around Steve and promises him those exact same words."

He leaned back in his chair, taking in the full text on the screen.

The suture was complete, with the past and present no longer running in parallel but colliding and fusing the tragedy of a lost era with the modern espionage thriller into one devastating moment of catharsis.

….

By 4:00 AM, the clatter of keys in the study finally came to a halt.

Regal pushed back from his desk, sinking into his chair with an exhale. His shoulders dropped, the lingering tension in his spine unraveling.

On the center monitor, the final page counter glowed softly:

[182 Pages]

Another three-hour cinematic titan.

He reached across the desk and picked up his phone.

The lock screen illuminated with a message from Gwendolyn, sent about an hour ago:

[Gwen]: The leftover basil chicken is in the glass tupperware on the second shelf. Do not eat cold delivery pizza again, mister. And Regal? Close the laptop. Come to bed.

A faint, genuine smile curved Regal's lips.

The kind of tender warmth that only she could pull out of a director whose head was usually buried in global production sheets.

He quickly typed back:

[Me]: Heating it up right now, and I am closing it, I promise. Love you.

Gwen was already asleep in the bedroom, so he could have easily ignored the message, but he had learned early in his dating life that you never leave a woman on read if you want to see her the next day.

He set the phone down and stood up, stretching his arms until his joints popped with satisfying relief.

The structure was magnificent.

By taking The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier and weaving them into a single narrative arc made the emotional stakes to land harder for the audience.

The audience would experience Steve's entire journey firsthand, from the streets of wartime Brooklyn and the blood-soaked trenches where he fought beside Bucky to the disorienting moment when he awakens decades later in a world that has moved on without him.

Regal walked back over to his desk, slipping his hands into his pockets as his gaze fell upon the master ledger lying open under the desk lamp.

Two distinct pages, and two separate multiversal pillars.

On the left side, the blueprint for Earth-616:

Phase One stood tall and locked in:

[Captain America: Sentinel of Time]

[Spider-Man - 2]

[Iron Man 2]

[Thor]

And the grand culmination of Phase One: [The Avengers]

The ultimate ensemble spectacle where earthbound grit meets cosmic thunder: Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, and Black Widow standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the middle of New York City.

Then Regal's dark eyes slid slowly to the right side of the ledger.

"And Earth-1..." Regal murmured, a sudden thrill igniting in his chest.

While Marvel laid its grounded, high-tech foundations, DC was rising with mythic, godlike majesty:

[Wonder Woman]

[The Flash]

[Aquaman]

And the seismic collision at the end of Phase One: [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice]

Two entire cinematic universes, each with its own rules, visual identity, and tone, were converging under the LIE Studios banner toward unprecedented milestones for the industry.

A low chuckle escaped his throat as he closed the ledger.

The exhaustion in his bones was completely overshadowed by the pure fire in his veins.

"I am excited..."

Regal whispered–

"God... I am so damn excited to build all of this."

….

Regal stepped out of his study, the quiet silence of the penthouse wrapping around him.

The aroma of warm savory herbs still hung faintly in the kitchen.

Following Gwendolyn's instructions down to the letter, he opened the refrigerator, found the glass container of basil chicken on the second shelf, and popped it into the microwave.

While the plate warmed, he leaned against the counter with a glass of cold water, his mind still cycling through camera lenses, color grades, and multiversal timelines at a hundred miles per hour.

Eating slowly, the warmth of home grounded him.

Then he quietly pushed open the door to the master bedroom, making sure he wasn't making any sound.

On the king-sized bed, surrounded by a mountain of pillows, Gwendolyn lay curled up on her side beneath the duvet.

She hadn't fallen fully asleep, spending the last two hours in a half-awake state while subconsciously waiting for the sound of his study door opening and the apartment lights switching off.

The moment he quietly kicked off his slippers and slipped under the heavy duvet, the bed dipped, and her eyes fluttered open in the dim light.

Her nose wrinkled slightly, catching the faint aroma of warm herbs clinging to him.

"...You ate the basil chicken?"

"Down to the last bite." Regal whispered, leaning in and gently brushing a soft strand of hair behind her ear. "Though I am pretty sure you put extra chili in it just to see if I was paying attention."

A tiny, adorable pout touched Gwendolyn's lips, quickly melting into a drowsy smile. Now that he was finally here, the lingering restlessness holding her awake vanished completely.

Like a magnet finding its pole, she slid across the sheets, burying her face straight into his chest with a content little sigh against his collarbone.

"Of course I did." she mumbled into his shirt, her arms wrapping securely around his waist, tugging him closer with possessive firmness. "That's the punishment for staying up until four in the morning."

"Four-fifteen, actually."

"Go to sleep, mister director." Gwen grumbled affectionately as she snuggled even deeper, tucking herself completely under his chin. "If you say one more counter word I am biting you, and you won't be able to wear your t-shirts."

Regal let out a laugh, feeling a warm, soothing wave of fondness wash over him.

He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her small frame flush against his own. Her forehead rested right in the hollow of his shoulder, fitting into place so perfectly it felt like second nature.

"Deal."

Regal murmured softly. "Though... the biting part doesn't really sound like a punishment."

Gwendolyn let out a sleepy, indignantly cute little huff against his collarbone. "Oh, really?"

Shifting slightly, she tilted her head upward, her lips brushing just above his collar against the soft skin of his neck.

With slow mischief, she didn't just give him a playful nip, she pulled his skin into a warm kiss, sucking just firmly enough to leave a deep blossom of crimson where the unbuttoned collar of any dress shirt would fail to hide it.

A sharp, delicious warmth bloomed across Regal's neck.

He drew in a soft breath, his hand instinctively resting at the small of her back. "Gwen..."

Gwen pulled back just a fraction, a drowsy, utterly triumphant little smirk playing at the corners of her lips as she admired her handiwork in the silver dawn.

"There." she mumbled with sleepy satisfaction. "Now everyone at the studio will know exactly why you're late."

Regal couldn't help but laugh softly, his fingers gently tracing the curve of her jaw before tucking a loose lock of hair behind her ear. "You're getting bolder with your threats, Miss Everleaf."

"Only with stubborn workaholics who sneak past four in the morning." she murmured, her eyelids already fluttering shut as she melted back down against him.

She wound both arms securely around his waist with sleepy possessiveness. "Now shut your eyes, or I am changing the password on your study door tomorrow."

Regal's smile softened into something endlessly tender. He leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head.

"Going to sleep." he whispered softly into the quiet room. "Goodnight, Gwen."

"Goodnight..."

With Regal finally holding her, the last lingering trace of restlessness evaporated into pure peace.

Within seconds, she surrendered completely, drifting into a deep, dreamless sleep wrapped safely in his arms.
