Chapter 457 - Into the Velkaris Expanse

A small movement broke the stillness.

Subtle.

From within Draven's cloak.

The slime slipped out slowly, fluid and unhurried, spreading lightly across the bed.

Lucifer noticed it first.

His eyes tracked it immediately, locking on with quiet focus.

Then his small hand moved.

Reaching.

Fingers stretching toward it.

The cat reacted at once.

A quick shift. One paw pressed gently against Lucifer's hand, stopping him. The other paw pushed the slime back.

A soft hiss followed.

Protective.

Lucifer paused, then without hesitation grabbed the cat's paw.

Firm.

The cat let out a short meow, trying to pull free and pushing against him with its other paw.

But Lucifer didn't release his grip.

Unyielding.

The slime continued moving regardless, unbothered, sliding across the fabric and looping slowly as if it had intent of its own.

Draven watched in silence.

Then something in his expression shifted.

Not his posture, just the faintest change in his face.

A small smile, barely visible.

His hand lifted, reaching toward the slime.

He touched it lightly, guiding it instead of stopping it, letting it curl around his fingers.

The slime responded immediately, coiling and shifting with a quiet, almost living fluidity as it settled into his grasp.

Elenya watched with bright curiosity, small hands lifting again.

Lucifer still held the cat. Still watching. Still focused.

The cat struggled again, more out of irritation than alarm, trying to free itself.

The bed, once still, now held small contained movement.

Quiet. Alive.

For a brief moment, nothing else in the world mattered.

Time passed gently.

Soft motion. Small sounds. Contained within the room like something fragile that did not want to break.

Draven sat among them, the slime curling loosely between his fingers while the cat eventually slipped free and settled nearby, watching with narrowed eyes.

Elenya reached out again, letting out a small laugh.

Lucifer remained observant, still holding awareness even as he relaxed.

A faint sound left Draven, a low chuckle, brief and gone almost immediately.

Then a voice broke the moment.

"My lord."

Vaelith.

Calm. Measured.

She stepped forward slightly.

"It is time. For the young master and young miss to feed."

Draven did not hesitate. He simply shifted his attention.

Vaelith brought forward the container from earlier and opened it carefully, dividing its contents into two smaller portions with precise, practiced motion.

"I will begin," she said.

Draven reached out and took one portion while she took the other.

They moved in sync.

He lifted Lucifer with steady support.

Vaelith lifted Elenya with equal care.

Both were seated properly, facing inward. Balanced. Supported.

Then feeding began.

Slow. Measured. No rush.

Lucifer accepted it quietly, still watching everything around him even as he ate.

Elenya responded more easily, soft movements and faint sounds of comfort slipping out as she was fed.

Vaelith adjusted gently whenever needed, ensuring every motion remained smooth and controlled.

Draven mirrored that same precision.

Silent. Efficient. Intentional.

The room settled again, not empty, but calm in a structured way.

Nothing wasted. Nothing careless.

Only control.

And for now, that was enough.

Time moved steadily.

Eventually both children finished.

Elenya drifted first, soft breaths slowing into sleep.

Lucifer followed later, quieter, still watching even as his eyes closed.

The cat curled beside them without hesitation, settling into a protective rest.

The slime remained coiled loosely near Draven's arm.

Vaelith cleaned the containers in silence.

Draven remained seated a moment longer, watching them.

Then he stood.

The room returned to stillness behind him.

Elsewhere, Seryna had found a room not far from the corridor. She placed the half-demon down carefully, adjusting her position to ensure steady breathing.

Kaelira leaned against the wall, watching without comment.

Lucien's sister stood near the door, quietly observing, always assessing.

They took turns watching, waiting, maintaining control over the situation without needing to speak it aloud.

Control Deck.

Lucien and Tharic remained at their stations, watching the mana flow and learning quickly now without needing constant correction.

The pilot only intervened when necessary.

Lyriana continued her work on the artifact, patterns beginning to form more clearly under her careful study.

The cultist remained close, stabilizing and assisting without interruption.

Aldric drifted in and out of the space unpredictably, but always aware of everything happening around him.

The ship continued north.

Unchallenged. Unstopped.

And as time passed, the system held.

No collapse. No failure.

Only progress.

Small. Controlled. But real.

Eventually, the pilot spoke again.

"We have left Thorne territory."

Calm. Measured.

"We are deep in the Velkaris Expanse now."

A pause.

"We will clear it in a few hours and enter the next region."

His hands adjusted slightly on the controls, checking the flow and balance.

"If there is anything we need to—"

"Slow down."

The cultist's voice cut in.

Not loud, but immediate.

The pilot paused.

Her gaze remained steady.

"My lord said we would be dropping them off in the next territory."

"You should reduce speed. And inform him first."

Silence lingered briefly.

Before Lyriana spoke.

"No."

Calm. Certain.

Her eyes never left the artifact.

"Maintain course."

A pause.

"We proceed into the next territory. I will inform His Highness."

Final. Decided.

The pilot exhaled lightly.

"Understood."

The ship did not slow.

It continued forward, cutting through the sky toward the edge of the Velkaris Expanse.

And whatever lay beyond it.

They were already heading straight into it.
