Ella propped her chin on her hands, her elbows resting on the table, her gaze fixed on Alexander.
He had gone quiet and that was always her first clue that something was wrong. Besides, she'd seen the way his thumb absentmindedly rubbed over his middle fingernail. Something he always did when he was worried.
Sensing her stare, he looked up. "What is it, babe?"
"You tell me," she replied, studying the faint crease between his brows.
His lips twitched. "Tell you what?"
Ella sighed softly. "What's troubling you?"
He chuckled, "It's just work," he said, brushing it off.
"Really now?" she frowned, leaning back with a faint pout. "Here I am talking your ear off about my day, even the annoying part with Emily, and you can't even share what's bothering you? Am I that unreliable?"
Her voice wasn't sharp, rather it was soft, and that, more than anything, made Alexander's chest tighten. 'Did I hurt her feelings?' He wondered.
