When Jessica reached Alexander's office floor, her heart felt as though it had lodged in her throat. The soft ding of the elevator doors opening only made her pulse quicken.
Marcus looked up the moment he saw her. Without a word, he pressed the intercom button. "Miss Richard is here, sir," he announced, then gave her a small nod. "Go in, Miss Richard. He's expecting you."
Jessica swallowed hard. Her knees felt weak, but she forced them to move. 'Leaving a meeting midway isn't enough to get me fired... right?' she tried to convince herself, though deep down she wasn't sure. Alexander Sterling wasn't known for leniency.
Summoning what little courage she had left, she pushed the door open.
Alexander was seated behind his desk, eyes fixed on his laptop screen.
"Sir," Jessica said softly, her voice trembling slightly. "You sent for me."
"Sit," Alexander said, still not looking up from his screen.
