Chapter 11 - Shadow acceptance

Julian sat in the field, trying to control his rapid breathing, while his mind swam between the memories of the first confrontation with the shadow. The mixed emotions of fear and anger hung over him, but he knew that returning was essential, even if it seemed impossible.

Suddenly, he heard footsteps approaching from behind him. Without raising his head, he spoke in a calm but exhausted voice: "I knew you would come."

Adir stopped nearby, offering a faint smile that conveyed reassurance. "Of course, I would. I wouldn't let you face this alone." He sat beside him, his eyes taking in the calm of the field around them.

"You look tired," Adir said, his tone blending concern and understanding.

"How could I not be?" Julian said with a tired smile, looking up at the sky. "I thought I was prepared, but… what I saw there… it wasn't just a test. It was a living nightmare."

Adir nodded as if his words brought back similar memories. "Yes, a nightmare… that's the right description. But you know, Julian, this nightmare is just a reflection of what we carry inside. Every fear, every mistake, every moment of weakness… they all mix to form our shadow."

Julian slowly raised his head and looked at his friend directly. "And what about you? How long did it take you to overcome your shadow?"

Adir chuckled briefly, but there was bitterness in the sound. "Longer than I'd like to admit. It was tough… tougher than you can imagine. My shadow wasn't just a version of me, but a manifestation of everything I tried to bury or ignore."

"Like what?" Julian asked, his voice full of curiosity and confusion.

Adir fell silent for a moment, as though the words he was about to speak were too heavy. "Like the feeling of betrayal. I always felt like I wasn't good enough… like I was a burden to everyone. And my shadow didn't hesitate to use that. It showed itself every time I fell, every time I weakened. It was a never-ending nightmare."

Julian swallowed hard, imagining what it might be like if he faced something similar. "And how did you overcome it?"

Adir sighed deeply and looked toward the distant horizon. "At first, I didn't face it. I ran. I thought running was the easiest solution. But every time I ran, my shadow grew stronger, as if it fed off my fear. Eventually, I realized that running wouldn't get me anywhere. The only way to overcome it was to accept it."

"Accept it?" Julian repeated, his voice a little louder, his eyes narrowing in doubt.

"Yes," Adir said firmly. "I realized that my shadow isn't my enemy. It's part of me. A part that carries my pain, my fear, my weakness, but also a part of my strength. When I stopped resisting it and began to understand it, everything changed."

Julian stared at the ground for a long time, as if trying to absorb his friend's words. "But… what if I can't? What if I keep running?"

Adir placed a hand on Julian's shoulder and looked him in the eyes with a steady gaze that made him feel a sudden surge of strength. "You won't run. I know you well, Julian. You're stronger than you think. The test isn't to prove your weakness but to show your strength. Just remember… it's okay to be afraid. Fear is part of the journey."

Julian smiled faintly, feeling some of his anxiety ease. "Sometimes I feel like you're telling these words to yourself more than you're telling them to me."

Adir laughed, a little louder this time as if Julian had hit the mark. "Maybe. We both need these words, Julian. We're not perfect. All we can do is keep trying."

"I think I'll try again," Julian said, his tone more confident.

Adir stood up and extended his hand to help Julian to his feet. "That's the spirit. But don't rush it. Take your time. When you're truly ready, you'll know."

After hours of reflection and mental preparation, Kross returned to the field. He looked at Julian with an evaluative glance. "Are you ready for the second attempt?"

Julian nodded, even though his heart was pounding violently. "I'm ready."

"Remember, Julian. The shadow isn't your enemy. It's part of you. If you try to run from it, it will chase you forever. The only way to overcome it is to face it."

Julian stepped back into the circle of inscriptions once more. He felt the strange energy flowing through his body. He closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, he had returned to the dark world.

But this time, the darkness was deeper, more oppressive. The air was thick, and every step felt like an immense effort.

In the distance, the shadow was waiting. It didn't move, but it watched him.

"Back again?" the shadow said, its voice laced with sarcasm. "Tell me, do you think courage will save you? Or are you just trying to prove to yourself that you're more than a failure?"

Julian took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. "I didn't come back to prove anything to you. I'm here to understand you."

The shadow laughed, but this time its voice was angrier. "Understand me? I am the darkness that hides within you. I am all your weakness, all your fear. You will never understand me."

"Maybe you were right the first time," Julian said quietly. "I was afraid of you, of myself. But not anymore. I'm not here to destroy you, but to accept you."

The shadow suddenly stopped laughing, as if Julian's words had touched something deeper than it could deny. "Accept me? Oh, the arrogance. You don't understand the darkness I carry. If you think you can face me this easily, you're more foolish than I thought."

Julian smiled faintly, but his voice was firm as he spoke. "Maybe you're right… but that doesn't mean I won't try."

The atmosphere suddenly began to shift, the darkness around Julian growing unnaturally thick. It was as though the shadow had become part of the place itself.

The shadow moved suddenly, appearing before Julian in the blink of an eye. It was a mysterious being, its features unclear, but it changed quickly, shifting and taking different forms with each passing moment.

"Is that all you have?" Julian said, bracing himself. "Are you trying to scare me with your appearance?"

The shadow laughed, a loud, mocking sound filled with power. "No, Julian. That's not what I'm trying to do. I'm simply embodying everything you fear to face. I am the fear you can't rid yourself of, the weakness you can't escape from."

At that moment, the shadow moved suddenly, lunging at Julian with lightning speed. Julian felt something heavy pressing on him as if everything around him had become a living nightmare.

The shadow wrapped around him like dark smoke, trying to suffocate him and drown him in feelings he couldn't escape. It was a true test of what he could endure.

"You can't run, Julian," the shadow whispered in its venomous tones, wrapping around his mind. "You're like everyone else, weak, afraid, incapable of controlling yourself."

Julian felt the pressure on his chest; he could barely breathe. He felt all his fear, all his weakness, every moment when he couldn't control his fate.

The shadow was pulling those emotions from him, reminding him of all his failures. But in that moment, he felt something strange stir within him.

He was screaming silently, but his voice echoed in his head. "No… not anymore. I won't let you control me."

Julian discovered something deep within himself, a sense of strength he had never known before.

He focused on that feeling, letting it fill his body and rise from the depths of his soul. He suddenly surged against the shadow, releasing a beam of light from his heart that pierced the darkness before him.

"You are part of me, but you will not control me anymore," Julian said firmly, as the light began to shine around him.

The shadow trembled slightly, then began to retreat. It wasn't disappearing entirely, but it was losing its power against this strange light. "This is impossible…" the shadow said in disbelief, struggling to hold onto the place. "You can't…"

But Julian didn't back down. "I've finally learned that fear is part of me, but I won't let it control me. I am stronger than that."

The shadow tried to overcome Julian, but the light only grew stronger. The darkness that had been enveloping him began to fade slowly, and with each step, the shadow took back, Julian came closer to it.

"You're just fear…" Julian said, raising his hand to release another beam. "And I will live despite all your fear."

As the shadow began to merge with Julian, he felt something strange. The shadow hadn't completely disappeared but had become a part of him.

He now saw it clearly, witnessing all his inner emotions, all his fears, all his moments of weakness. But what he felt after that was something entirely different, a sense of power he had never experienced before.

He was now on the edge of discovering his true self, and the darkness had become a new power for him, a power he could control instead of it controlling him.

"I accepted you, not because I need you, but because I want to be stronger through you," Julian said, feeling an odd sense of balance within himself.

The shadow, now a part of him, no longer posed a threat but was a new power Julian could control.
