Chapter 475 - Ripples in Ironroot Hall

The corridor outside the appraisal chamber remained as quiet as before—

thick carpets swallowing every footstep without sound.

Red lanterns cast a low, steady glow across polished lacquered walls, their light unmoving, almost watchful.

But now—

everything felt sharper.

The fox walked ahead without slowing, tail swaying lightly behind her, expression composed as ever.

As if nothing had changed.

As if she had not just been handed a fragment of opportunity dangerous enough to shift the entire direction of her path.

Shen Tu followed quickly at her side, still visibly struggling to align his thoughts with what had just happened.

Little White drifted beside them as well, another fresh wine jar already floating in his grasp.

The fox's gaze flicked toward him briefly.

Then—

through their link—

her voice slipped directly into his mind.

*Little White.*

The lizard's golden eyes shifted lazily toward her.

*Hm?*

A faint curve touched the fox's lips.

Slow. Controlled. Sharp.

*We just found the perfect bait.*

A pause.

The lizard took another sip.

*The map.*

The fox's amusement deepened slightly.

*Yes. That map.*

*Useful.*

Her gaze lifted toward the distant end of the corridor, where the entrance to the auction hall spilled red light across polished stone like fresh blood.

*Think about it.*

*An old ruin in White Bone Tiger territory.*

*Something valuable enough that even beasts here are willing to bid for it.*

*And tied directly to the region we were already planning to enter.*

The lizard said nothing.

But his attention had clearly sharpened.

The fox continued, voice steady in his mind.

*Meihu is cautious.*

*Right hand of a Demon King.*

*She won't move around without reason.*

*A direct approach would be messy.*

Her eyes gleamed faintly.

*But treasure?*

*A ruin?*

*A map that can shift interest across the entire region?*

*That draws attention on its own.*

The lizard finally spoke.

*You want to stir the territory.*

The fox gave the smallest nod.

*Exactly.*

*A map like that is more than treasure.*

*It's noise.*

*Competition.*

*Movement.*

*If Meihu hears about it…*

*She'll either move herself…*

*or send someone important.*

A soft, satisfied undertone brushed her thoughts.

*Either way… we get ripples.*

The lizard drank again, silent for a few steps.

Then—

*And if the ripples drown you instead?*

The fox's smile widened.

Bright. Dangerous.

*Then we swim faster.*

Her thought paused—

then corrected itself with a faint, almost teasing edge.

*And next time, don't make it sound like I'm doing this alone.*

*If you aren't with me, I wouldn't even consider something like this.*

*Aren't you the one involved in all of it too?*

A brief pause.

Then, quieter—

*We're in this together.*

That earned a soft exhale from him—not quite a sigh, not quite approval.

Just acceptance.

Because this—

reckless, sharp, unbalanced—

was exactly what she was.

Ahead, the main auction hall doors began to open.

The first wave of bidders was already entering.

The fox slowed.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Now she wasn't simply here to observe.

She was here to cast a line—

and see which monsters decided to bite first.

The auction hall stretched wide before them.

Vast.

Tiered.

Silent in the particular way only places of immense wealth could be.

Rows of blackstone seating curved in a broad crescent around a central floating dais.

Above, spirit lanterns hovered like suspended stars, casting a pale silver glow that softened every edge.

Every seat was separated by subtle barriers and layered soundproofing formations.

Privacy.

Control.

Precision.

At the center, the auction platform hovered slightly above the ground.

Runes pulsed along its perimeter in slow rhythm.

A stage.

A defense array.

And, if needed, a slaughter field.

The fox approved immediately.

This place understood value.

The horned attendant guided them to a private alcove on the middle tier.

Hidden enough to avoid notice.

Open enough to observe everything.

Before leaving, he bowed once.

"Your consignment will appear in sequence."

"If you wish to bid, place your paw upon the jade slate."

He gestured to a smooth black slab embedded into the table.

"All bids will be transmitted anonymously."

The fox's ears twitched slightly.

Efficient.

She liked efficient systems.

The attendant bowed again, then withdrew.

The moment he left, Shen Tu exhaled sharply.

"My Lady…"

His voice came out low, half disbelief, half awe.

"I still can't believe I'm here."

The fox barely glanced at him.

"Try not to embarrass me."

Shen Tu straightened instantly.

"Yes, My Lady."

In the corner of the alcove, Little White had already coiled around another wine jar, entirely unconcerned with the world.

The fox looked at him briefly.

Then gave a quiet, resigned snort.

Hopeless.

Below them, the hall continued to fill.

Private alcoves lit one after another around the tiers.

Silhouettes appeared in shadowed compartments.

Beasts. Humanoids. Old figures wrapped in silence and wealth.

Power, gathered and contained.

The fox leaned forward slightly, forepaws resting near the edge of the table.

Her gaze moved slowly across the hall.

Searching.

Measuring.

Waiting.

If Meihu—or anything tied to her—was here, this was where it would surface.

Then—

a bell rang.

Clear. Soft.

Instantly, the hall fell silent.

A side door beneath the dais opened.

And a woman stepped out.

Tall.

Graceful.

Draped in dark crimson robes slit high at the leg, black hair pinned with bone-white ornaments.

Fox ears rose from her head.

And behind her—

nine faint, illusory tails unfurled like drifting smoke.

The fox's eyes narrowed immediately.

Not Meihu.

But of the same bloodline.

Close.

Connected.

The woman walked onto the dais with effortless elegance.

Her smile was calm.

Beautiful.

Dangerous in a way that required no effort to show.

"Honored guests…"

Her voice flowed through the hall like silk warmed by fire.

"Welcome to Ironroot Hall."

The fox's tail went still.

Because this was not a normal auction host.

This was someone who didn't need to raise her voice to control a room full of monsters.

And suddenly—

the night felt even more interesting than before.
