Xu Ruan had not expected the emperor to summon her again so soon. But it was a welcomed surprise.
It had been only three nights since she entered the harem. The servants had barely finished arranging her new chamber when the Chief Eunuch came with an imperial edict, announcing that His Majesty desired her presence for supper.
When she entered the hall, the emperor was reclining on the couch, his robe loosened, wine in hand. His gaze softened the moment it fell on her.
"You've adjusted quickly," he said, motioning for her to sit.
Xu Ruan knelt gracefully beside the low table, eyes lowered. "Your Majesty honors me too much."
The emperor poured a cup of wine and handed it to her himself.
"Drink with me."
Xu Ruan accepted with trembling hands, lowering her gaze as though flustered.
"This concubine is unworthy of such favor."
He smiled faintly.
"Unworthy? I decide who is worthy."
